I nudged him to put me down but he was busy gaping at his mother and daughter. Mom was both surprised and shocked to see us together that too like that.
"Manik put me down please", I jerked his shoulder to make him look at me. He gave me a look and again glanced at him Mom ignoring my pleas.
"Nandini what happened to your leg??", Mom finally spared a look from us to take a note of my injury. I had just opened my mouth to answer her but Manik interrupted me.
"What else!! Showoff karne gayi thi usika natija hai", Manik sniffled arrogantly. Of course now that he had a point to annoy me why wouldn't he. Mom quietly tried to calculate our silent frowns that we gave to each other.
"Mommy you alsho ooouuu", Manini flocked towards me and tried to touch the bandage on my leg. Yes we were a family who if not stay together or dine together but at least manage to get hurt together.
Manik immediately pulled me higher out of the reach of her hand, "Princess noo.. Mommy is hurt na..be careful baby", and she coiled her lips in annoyance not being able to touch me.
I nudged him again and finally he came to the couch and carefully made me sit on that. His eyes flickered here and there being around the 3 most important women in his life, his mother, his wife and his daughter. It was a awkward situation for him.
He pretended not to care much but I knew he was concerned, "Amm don't stress on it much..take care", he said half looking at me and stepped back and kissed Manini on the head and was about to walk out when suddenly Mom spoke.
"Acha Nandini I was wondering with that injury how are you going to manage... I mean how will you cook for dinner tonight and clean up..even Manda Tai is not there.. Besides how will you take care of Manini...her food, homework, school everything, she was evidently loud and animated and it didn't take me a minute to guess what was it for. Manik had already halted by the door.
"Mom its okay I will manage and you are also there so it won't be a problem", I made deliberate faces at her letting her know that I was aware of her intentions.
Mom immediately looked away towards Manik but not at him, "No no no I can't stay tonight...I have a very important work at the NGO office in fact I will be at the NGO whole night so you see it for yourself.. I can't stay back".
"Fine then I will manage on my own", I obviously didn't want to make anyone feel that I was unable to take care of me and my daughter.
"Yes that is something you have to do because you are alone... I have my life...I can't be ignoring my life and taking care of someone else's wife and daughter", she said in an intentional mean tone and gave a quick look at me and Manik and made her exit.
Manik temper had already risen at his Mom's words, he eyed me continuously and nodded his head in dejection, "And you had fought with me for this lady...like seriously"
His Mom definitely knew how to instigate her son and she was almost successful as well. Manini had also got her hints and she quickly dropped her barbie on the floor and ran to Manik.
"Daddy will you sthay with ushh tuunite", she held Manik's hand and asked with hopeful puppy eyes.
