Chapter 5: Confessions
It had been almost three months since their marriage and it was nothing but a happy happy world of fairytale. Manik, Nandini and Ansh had never been so happy in their life and probably this was the reason of all their sadness till now- because they were meant to meet in one of the worst phases of their lives to come together and get affixed in this strong relation of love.
In these past months Manik and Nandini had grown immensely close with each other. Although Nandini would not express she loved this world where Manik and Ansh stood by her side, she still ensured to do some little antics for them while they always ensured to make her feel loved. She would wake up strongly protected in the arms of Manik every morning. Then at breakfast tablet Manik would flirt with her. When she came back from late night duties Manik would be making Ansh sleep and at times both of them would be bickering with each other how biased is it from her side for giving hospital more time. Not to forget flirty Manik there as well. Manik also accompanied Nandini to some of the meetings with Dr Abhimanyu and made sure to be careful with what she has got to say. Without doubt Manik would be the perfect husband hearing her talk intently and recording the sessions too. He still did not like Abhimanyu as such though. She would see Manik researching about healing depression and reading various magazines when he left his laptop unattended to talk to someone over the phone. And at times flirt again (as always) in front of Ansh making her so uncomfortable while the father and son enjoyed at her expense. The past months were probably the best time of her life.
Nandini sat in her cabin today. It was a Friday afternoon and it was a week since Ansh was gone. But that was not her concern of worry because she talked with him every day. He had gone to a summer camp and would be back the next week, but what was troubling her was in this past week there was not a single time Manik showed love towards her. It almost looked like as if Ansh was the only reason Manik flirted and talked with her otherwise in this past days Manik had not even talked properly with her once. And this very reason was killing Nandini.
She looked at their family photo and mumbled a few curses. She got up again, being restless and resided to her chair dejected. The last week was the longest and loneliest week of her life after Manik had entered. She sighed and took a long breath and braced herself. Manik was her husband and she had all, in fact only right over him. She convinced her heart and mind and mustered up the courage.
"Manik Malhotra you need to talk. Nandini you can do this."She told herself and took her phone and opened the messenger and messaged Manik.
Nandini: hmm
Manik yes.hmm...
Nandini: it's been too long
Manik: you miss me?
Nandini: hmm
She thought to herself after a long pause and then without giving any second thoughts she texted him again.
Nandini: I am coming for lunch
Manik: I might be busy in a meeting actually I still am.
Nandini: No problem I will wait. I am hungry.
Manik: Sure baby. *Wicked grin*
She thought to herself "You just have to play these games with me Manik."She smiled and went towards his office with a full resolution to know if Ansh was all that made him talk to her. She wanted to remind him of his promise when he said he would marry her. In fact, of many things that was giving her sleepless nights and hard mornings. For the first time in years she was not restless because of herself but because Manik was not giving the desired attention to her. But he was right when he said" You will have many first times with me."
She walked into his office and explored around. She had never been here before and maybe she just had a moment to herself and realize" Damn Manik is really rich."Their house was pretty sophisticated but simple and the office building was completely opposite. It was a huge building; all curved glasses and steel; paintings around and Malhotra Industries are written in big letter in steel over the glass front doors. She looked at the lobby and the office looked really classic and beautiful. She walked to the reception because she had simply no idea where Manik was or where he resided in this huge empire state building.
"Hii. Is Manik Malhotra's meeting over?" She enquired to the girl sitting in the front desk. She looked at Nandini and thought of something and arched her brows slightly. She then replied "Are you Dr.Nandini?"
Nandini got really conscious and intimidated as to what she would reply and nodded nervously. For some reason the receptionist looked delighted to meet her "Hello ma'am. Please go in his cabin and wait for him there. Sir is in a meeting I will let him know you are here."
"Oh, no that's okay. I will wait for his meeting to get over."Nandini suggested calmly thinking to herself "So Mr. Malhotra was actually busy. He really wasn't flirting."
"No ma'am. Sir has actually been waiting for you and he has asked me to inform him as you come."
Nandini was for once absolutely flabbergasted by this special gesture of Manik but then she realized he was Manik Malhotra and being his wife meant being special. Although it was strange the girl referred to her as Dr. Nandini and not Mrs. Malhotra. She then dismissed her thoughts again for expecting to be called Mrs.Malhotra.
"Aiappa what am I even thinking?"She mentally cursed herself.
She followed one of the workers to his cabin and went in to see a really simple arrangement but a huge cabin. It almost looked only Manik worked on that floor because the cabin was really huge with multiple things around. His main workspace was in the middle and there was a small round table chair on the side for probably him to sit down and discuss with his colleagues. Beyond that, there was a floor to ceiling window with a view of the Mumbai traffic and the busy life this city had. She sat in his chair with full authority and observed around. The place was so clean, unlike the messy Manik she met at home. She chuckled, thinking maybe he had a 360 degree turn as he entered the premises. She laughed to herself when she heard Manik clearing his throat and entering the cabin.
"Hello Mrs. Malhotra. Nice to see you on my chair "Manik dressed in a perfect suit told her looking up at her and smirking all the while. Nandini tried hard to act normal face and not blush in front him. But Manik was such a moron he exactly knew the effect he had won her so came right across the table and leaned on it keeping minimal distance between the chair and the table.
"Your meeting?"
"It's over. My boss is waiting for me in the cabin. How can I deal with my client then?"He came dangerously close to her and let out the words and Nandini felt something strange with this. She felt some current flowing in her body having Manik so close to her. This had to happen all the time he is with me she thought, but masked her feelings and put her hands on his face to push him away "So cheesy Manik."
Manik responded quickly and moved away thinking Nandini was uncomfortable."Hmm. What's going on?"Nandini bit her lip in nervousness, but answered, looking totally clueless "What's going on?"
He again went close to her after all he could just not control his feeling. Swiftly took out his mobile and then put forward the last conversation they had. She looked at him again trying to figure out what he meant. He pointed to the conversation and highlighted her text "You are hungry but you are waiting for me. Doesn't fit right Nandini. So tell me what's going on?"
"I thought even you are hungry."She fumbled for the right words and spoke. Luckily someone just knocked to the cabin so Nandini straighten herself while Manik ordered; or rather snarled "Not now. Later."He then took the intercom and in his bossy voice told again "Ana don't allow anyone in my cabin."
To some extent Nandini was a bit shocked to see this side of Manik but then again, he flashed his charming smile and turned the chair Nandini was sitting towards him and said "So I am all yours doctor."
"Manik please "She said frustrated seeing Manik all so cheesy and romantic. And just a while back, she was angry that Manik had not flirted with her for a week. The mood swings Nandini Moorthy enjoyed: at one point she was furious at Manik for not flirting with her and when he was being cheesy she was annoyed.
"What? I meant my lunch time is all yours."But she was dealing with Manik Malhotra so even he acted all cool and added "So where is the lunch box?"
This just added more red to the already pink cheeks of Nandini. She was caught, embarrassed and flushed; confused too. She was hurling accusing at herself for showing up at Manik's office without any idea of how to have a lunch. She scolded her heart for making herself look so desperate and a complete fool. However for her presence of mind, she came with a backup plan quickly "I thought we could go out and eat."
"Are you asking me out on a date?"He rolled his eyes and Nandini just knew one thing right now. She had to avoid this. A while back, she was dejected that Manik was not caring for her, but now this undivided attention was making her really nervous. Really very nervous.
"Manik I am seriously hungry." she replied bluntly. She did not want to give into her feeling so easily, she thought now. She did not want to. Something stopped her from what she had thought in her office and Manik too did not bother her. He ordered pizza for her a Nandini breathed long for once. She was catching her breath, it seemed. But what for because her heartbeats went crazily up and down when he was around. That too with the position MAnik was sitting she could not help but appreciate his toned body. Her husband was really smart and beautiful. The perfect jaw line, his childlike smile, his breathtaking charm, and his contagious aura- everything about him was lovable. For once she even thought how it would be to make love to him---
"Hmm so tell me."Manik's voice brought her out of her lala land and she turned crimson as realization dawned upon her. She was not at all happy about coming to his office now. In fact, if she spent some more time with him she would not shy in confessing her feeling as she was hot in her cheeks and her ears were literally burning. When hearing of no reply and just seeing Nandini stare at him Manik asked her again in the most loving way "You missed me?"
"I miss--"Nandini took a long pause to think of a decent reply and that's when she noticed Ansh's picture on the table. She thanked her darling son for saving her and replied instantly "Ansh. I miss Ansh."
Yet Manik was not going to buy it a he showed her the conversation and said" Ok, so that's why Ansh's father is being messaged."
Nandini wanted to get buried in the ground beneath for thinking so impulsively and doing right what her heart wanted. But now with her brain active she wanted to slap herself for a thousand times over and over again.
"Come-on Nandini. Just accept it you wanted to have lunch with me simple. I love you, you know that."Manik told casually while she wondered how he could simply just tell her that he loves her. He told her many times and this just one week he hadn't and it had bothered her so much. She wondered if Manik felt the same as she always chose to be silent whenever he confessed or made a gesture.
"Yeah."She replied absent mindedly still in her thoughts and Manik took full advantage of it."What you love me too?"
"Yeah" she said again, but then she registered what he just said and almost shouted negatively her eyes bulging in shock and fear as to why she did that.
"Dr Nandini Moorthy. What's wrong with you?"Manik folded his arms, looking amused seeing the mature and quiet Nandini acting in the strangest way possible. He took a chair from the side and sat in front of her. He became quiet for a while just so that she can speak and let out what exactly was going in her head.
"Manik. I am troubled. You know since the day we got married you always gave me attention and you know cared for me. And now you don't?"She tried to frame her word of heart in a complete and meaningful sentence. Manik took her hands in his and reassured her "I still care Nandini."
Had it been some other day Nandini would have given in calmly and stayed quiet but not today as it was her day of going berserk and muddled. She then continued ranting to him "No you don't. It's like you did those things just to please Ansh."Manik was bewildered, but he let her speak again "I mean you don't give me chocolates. Flirt with me. You don't --"She paused for a while confused if she should go further or not and looked at Manik. He encouraged her to slowly try to complete her sentence "you don't?"
"You don't tell me that you love me. You don't snuggle with me in the morning when I try to wake up. You don't catch my hands and walk around. You don't kiss me" She finally let out the burden of her heart and she felt so calm, but then she registered what she said in a fit of rush and she felt so cold although her heart felt good. Manik grinned wickedly and then played with her hair still with her hands in his." Ok. So the struggle is about me not kissing you?"
"Yeah...I mean no!!!" In a daze Nandini nodded her head positively and negatively again. Manik was absolutely enjoying seeing Nandini so impetuous. This was a rare sight to watch -the sorted doctor goes restless and angry after not getting any attention from her husband.
"It means you love me too."He came really close to her and Nandini closed her eyes in anticipation. This felt odd as Manik slowly caressed her face with his long slender fingers. She gulped the saliva waiting for him to kiss her, but it did not happen, although she could feel his warm breath right in her face. He then whispered in her ears" I wish I could kiss you right there in your face where it is really pink, but then I am a professional. I don't romance in the office, especially when my staff does not know you are not my wife."
Nandini opened her eyes and withdrew her hand embarrassed.
"But we have tonight and Ansh is not home."He winked at her and sat back in his chair calmly; the evil grin plastered to his face. She blinked her eyelids rapidly, which matched her heart rate and Manik smirked seeing her state. He so loved to see this.
"I am glad you love me but you know I had to do this to get down your ego. You would just not acknowledge my presence and a bit of psychology even I know. If your partner does not interest in you, make her curious and interesting."He finally revealed why he was ignoring her and Nandini looked at him and asked him quietly "So my ego bothered you and you did this?"
Manik then tried to explain her coaxing her like her baby taking her face in his hands "No Nandini. Your ego is my habit. I love you and you know it well. I wanted to know if you feel same or am I just forcing my love on you."
"But you know it"
"Know what"
"My feelings."
"Okay then tell me? What is it?" His lips quirked up in a half-smile and he looked down at Nandini. She closed her eyes, thinking there is simply no escape today. She sighed and then looked right into his eyes. She could feel a strange tingling sensation in her stomach, but she let go and wet her dry lips. She then spoke softly "I love yo--"
And the door was knocked right in time. Nandini breathed again thinking thanking the escape she got. She might have to reassemble her thoughts, but had she let it out now, maybe she would never tell Manik how special he was actually to her. She was grateful to the person at the door while Manik was furious. Why not? Mr. Malhotra was clock blocked.
"What timing?"Manik was burning and literally angry, however Nandini said quietly "It's the lunch."She did not want any of the workers to face his wrath for interrupting their moment but the truth was this was not a right place for this confession.
He went to the door while Nandini stood just so that if anyone peeks in; the office staff does not get a wrong feeling. She got up and looked around again and stood behind Manik .Now that she got up; she realized how hungry she felt. Suddenly she was even hungrier, but sadly it was not a pizza delivery. Rather, it was a woman who was dressed in an office gown and looked middle aged.
"Hello Manik "She said in her ever so charming voice but something was off in it. She sounded more sarcastic then concerned and maybe Nandini's intuition was right as Manik spat on her immediately, not even letting her finish "What are you doing here?"
Nandini nodded her head sadly thinking Manik is going to take her anger out on this poor lady, but then she interrupted him "The office has a gossip that their boss is romancing a girl in his cabin and see they are not wrong. You have a guest indeed. Who is she Manik?"
As the words came out of her mouth Nandini wanted to punch the lady right on the face wherever it hurt and she did not care if she was Manik's biggest investor. Right now she wanted to the lady out of the sight and she was more than glad even Manik had mutual feelings about her."That's none of your concern Nyonika. Just get the hell out of here"
The lady was not very impressed with the way she was greeted and defensively answered "Manik I was just passing by and you know --"However Manik did not let her complete and sarcastically told her with his voice full of taunts and accusation" Yeah I know how nosy, you are."
He smiled forcibly but then the lady had too much to handle in front of the staff as she was given a mouthful by Manik. She went to him dangerously close and for a moment Nandini's heart skipped.
"Actually I thought to warn you. You know right, you have the habit of hurting and losing the people you love the most. "The lady said and stormed out of the place and whatever be her intention the look on Manik's face was not a good one.
The lady, whoever she was, left the door, leaving Nandini astounded with what she just said and Manik petrified about something. Nandini somehow just knew from his reaction it was not something good she had mentioned about, but all Nandini could do was become confused.
Manik closed his eyes in frustration and ran his hand around his hair and gritted his teeth as if trying to control his anger. He was as white as snow and it looked as if there was no blood running inside him. Nandini closed her eyes in despair, seeing Manik like that. Just a while back there, both of them were having the best time of their life and now everything seemed shattered. It almost looked like a gush of wind came and took all of the happiness.
Manik caught hold of Nandini's hand and walked out of his cabin while his staff looked terrified as they could make out something was wrong that Manik was so angry about. The whole office was silent as he took Nandini out and for a change even she thought of being silent. She was scared of his anger. She was scared that he might just say something which might hurt her now somewhat healed soul.
The way Manik drove the car was rash and it sent a cold feeling in Nandini's heart. He parked the car outside their house and Nandini gathered her guts and came out calling behind him "Manik. Manik what's wrong?"
But he just did not pay any heed to her words and walked away to his room. As Nandini took the stairs she could hear things breaking in their room and she gathered all the courage, yet perplexed, she walked to their door to find it locked from inside. Things were now pin drop silent inside the room and she stood outside silent, watching this side of Manik. The side he hardly showed anyone as he told her often. She remembered how just sometime back, smirking he had told her "You don't want to see my devil form" and she had just giggled away. And now she stood shocked not knowing what to do. The only thing she knew was Manik was inside hurting himself and the door was a barrier between the both.
"Manik "She knocked on the door nervously expecting for a reply. She knocked again and Manik shouted from the other side" Nandini leave me for a while. I am fine."
Tears streamed from Nandini's eyes even though this was the last thing she wanted. She gathered herself again for the sake of him and told again "Talk to me. I am here. Tell me what's wrong."
"Nandini just go. I am fine."He spat in anger from the other side and although Nandi was scared of this she wanted to face him. For some reasons unknown she wanted her deepest nightmare to come true. Manik shouting at her would be the last thing she wanted, but for once she did because that was the only way Manik would let things out from his heart.
"Manik I am not fine. Please open the door."And still he would not open. All she met was with silence. One thing she was happy about was that the breaking sound from inside the room had stopped.
"Manik please let it out. You will be fine."She tried again and he replied "Nandini leave me for a while please"
"I am waiting outside the door. Tell me when you are fine."And with that Nandini sat on the door waiting for him to speak up. To open the door. To open his heart for her. She whispered to herself unknown that tears were streaming down "I love you Manik. I really do."
