You said it - Nandani is not some possession, she is a human being, with feelings and emotions, and equally has the right to fall in love with whom she wishes to.
This "sacrifice" track has been done to death! I would love it if this show, and the writers stray away from that and do something like you've suggested...Let the girl decide what she wants. At the end of the day, any human being wants to be with the person whom they love, and who loves them back...the former being the important part, here.
