| Rani Mukerjee's kurtas in Bunty Aur Babli have become very popular among residents | From the Afghani salwar that Aamna Sharif wears in Kahiin to Hoga to Rani Mukerji's kurta in Bunty Aur Babli, from Lara Dutta's ravishing top in Tauba Tauba, Kaal, to the polka-dotted saree that Kkusum wears, fashion-conscious residents are adopting styles from the small and big screen.
"The layperson is hugely inspired by what celebrities wear on screen.
Celebrities are trendsetters and why wouldn't people like to wear something that everyone is talking about?" asks Shalini More, store manager, Remanika, R Mall.
The current favourites at the store are the sequined dress that Lara Dutta wore in Tauba Tauba, which has been converted to a top (Rs 2,650) by the store, and the tube top and long skirt (Rs 1,350) worn by a model at a ramp show in Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi. "These outfits are expensive but they are hot picks," she adds. The women's store stocks westerns and partywear.
"Whatever celebrities wear becomes a style statement," believes Shailesh Bhai, owner of Sundaram Stores at Sainath Plaza, JN Road, which stocks a variety of salwar kameez.
"At one point, Kareena's plunging neckline in Hulchul was popular. Many women also buy the back-open top Ayesha Takia wore in the movie Tarzan the Wonder Car," reveals this shop owner, who sells ethnic wear.
Stores like Vibhutee on MG Road and Jashan at R Mall have an advantage as they design clothes for TV serials. "Our customers know this so they come with a specific outfit in mind," says Shankar Bhanushali, owner of Vibhutee.
"We design for shows like Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai and Khichdi so there's a demand for a particular saree worn by, say, Hansa in Khichdi," he adds.
According to Ismail Sayed, store manager of Jashan, which designs sarees for serials like Kkusum, Kutumb and Kumkum, "Some customers ask for specific costumes they have seen while others ask for same styles with variations."
He adds, "Chiffon sarees worn by Kumkum and Kkusum, like the polka-dotted saree, are popular." Residentspeak

Shruti Jain Resident of JN Road
Jain, who was trying on the Tauba Tauba top at Remanika, says, "Wearing designs that celebs have worn makes you feel special; you feel like you are part of the trendy crowd." She adds, "I guess the logic is that if something looks good on someone, why not try it on ourselves! It's not copying — we are influenced and inspired by them."
