Are people really like this?

I just can't understand how people think like this:

1. No one likes Sudha and Jyoti because they are middle class.

2. They treat other people's daughters like crap. But, when it's their own daughters, they can't understand why people are treating them this way - for instance, CM tries to talk to Meenal's inlaws about Meenal returning and how unfair it is to treat her in this way, but CM herself treats Sudha and Jyoti like they are nothing.

3. Meena's father in law is concerned about the girl who Uday was supposed to marry so much that he has forgotten that he has stopped Meenal to reunite with her husband.

4. Meenal's husband doesn't have any say in whether his wife stays with him or not.

5. They agree to marriage between children without even the children accepting, or meeting or liking each other. And, they think they can marry one girl to another guy if the first guy doesn't like her - like the girl belongs to them to do whatever they please.

6. Everyone cares about their reputation more than their children or the feelings of their own family, to the point of thinking of sending a woman back to her inlaws even if the inlaws potentially could mistreat her ...

What kind of a world are we living in? I myself have faced some of this, and thought it was between particular families, but it seems to be rampant. There is no respect for human wants, needs, feeling, etc. It's all very selfish.

Great insight Samirah...
These dramas always have stale ideas...and the never-ending Saas-Nahu ill-treating sagas...

You know, most of those things in your list I have faced. It may seem a little farfetched sometimes, but things like this definitely do happen. But not necessarily all the things on your list.
Like for instance, Keshav ji suggesting that now they get Pankaj married to that girl they rejected for Uday. Would that girl, after being rejected by these people want to come into this house? Would her parents agree to send her to people like these?
And how dare Keshavji presume that because Jyoti made 1 mistake, Pankaj is ready to replace her. He too has kicked Meenal out of the house, has he starting looking for prospective brides for his son? If that girl is so good, then why doesn't he get her married to Sumant? He obviously doesn't want Meenal back because she's clearly arrogant and insolent.
As for caring more about their reputation than anything else. That is such a double standard in hindi serials. If the girl does something wrong publically, she had dishonoured the name of her family. She is insulted and sent back to her maayka where her maayka-wale also have to face mean words.
This is happening to Jyoti. She can't get a job and people come to the Sharma house and insult her parents.
But Meenal was kicked out first! No one came to the Vashist house to taunt CM for having an utter disgrace as a daughter, who after so many years of marriage, was kicked out because of her attitude. Why is Jyoti the only one facing these peoblems?
Some things shown are so ridiculous

So true....
We have these double standard in real life too...
People want everything for their daughter not for another person's daughter i mean DIL...
if they found a tiny mistake of DIL they make it like a hill out of porportion and if it their daughter is in fault they simply close their eye
If all MIL treat DIL like their own daughter this place will be just like a heaven......

Great observations. Why doesn't Kesav-ji get Sumant to marry that Kota girl? Surely, his friendship w/ his troubled friend would increase.

Speaking of reputations, another thing - the Kota girl was innocent, and her family only agreed to get into negotiations w/ CM b'cos they thought Uday wanted it as well. But Uday wanted Sudha, who CM hated, and so CM went ahead and dragged that family here. I feel for the Kota girl who did nothing wrong, and suddenly, everybody thinks that since Uday rejected her, there must be something wrong w/ her, and now her family is even willing to let her be the wife of a blind divorcee just in order to marry her off at all costs, no matter what.

Also, Jyoti is rejected for her job for reasons having nothing to do w/ her ability, but just the fact of her name? Another thing - in Rajasthan, do women take their husband's first names as their middle names, as they do in Sneha Wagh's Maharashtra?

Here is an idea - once the Sharmas find out that CM wants Pankaj to re-marry, how about they go to Kesav-ji and ask him to set up Deepu w/ that girl instead? Deepu's current objection to this family is that they want to use him to get to the Vashisths, but w/ the Kota girl, the family's (I'm assuming the Kota girl has no mind of her own in all this) intention is to get her married, somehow or the other, in which case, Deepu would be just fine. Then the Sharmas can in lieu of that ask Kesav-ji to take Minal back on condition that CM treat both Jyoti & Sudha well, and get Pankaj to take Jyoti back.

My question was a bit retorical as I know that some of this happens in real life.
For instance, all the girls who I know who are treated like lesser beings at their inlaws despite giving up everything to be at their inlaws ... and how quickly the husbands believe what their mothers say about how bad the daughter in law is.
And, there are other girls who I know who after breaking off a rishta, society thinks something is wrong with them even if they found out the boy was in the wrong. And, then the girl is forced to marry someone else to save her reputation.
So, yes, unfortunately we all know situations like this - in Indian, Canada, the US, etc. It happens everywhere where we Indians are. Inspite of having such a rich heritage of knowledge and skill, we also have these bad things which force women to do only what men make them do ...

I don't agree w/ the last phrase - what men make them do. Most abuse of women seem to happen from their female in-laws or even own relatives. In the serial itself, Jyoti is abused by no-one other than cm, Sudha is accepted by Pratik & Pankaj, but Minal is the prick who makes her life miserable. Back at home, Deepu never thought of Jyoti as a step-sister, but Padma & Sushma did. All the abuse here of women is done by other women.

And somehow, women are the ones with the hang-ups that if a girl ain't married, either she's worthless, or that her life is ruined. Although in this serial men are shown gossiping (like in Deepu's office), the trend is overwhelmingly that of women doing it.

Hi - I just meant with women not being allowed home, or having to settle for who their parents want ...
