Chapter : 10
As the maid led her through the maze of halls of the palace, Sameera couldn't help but stare in wonder at the magnificent structure of the castle. The palace was as beautiful on the inside as it seemed from the outside. If only she could say the same about the people that resided there.
Sam looked to the side to see the maid walking with her head bowed, not even daring to look up. Sam decided to break the awkward tension that was building up.
"So, are you going to be quiet all the way?" She asked.
The maid seemed to be startled by the sudden question. "Slaves are not supposed to talk out of turn. Especially, the females."
Sam frowned. The self-esteem of the girls of this era needed some serious work. "Well, I am giving you a turn. Tell me about the palace."
The maid's face lit up and she nodded. "The fort has been here since the 11th century. When Sultan Babur came, he captured when he was victorious in Panipat battle. Sultan Humayun was crowned here. But unfortunately ..."
The maid continued to babble about the history of the palace. It was clear that she knew much about the history of the palace and she loved it. Sam smiled, seeing that the maid had become comfortable in her presence. She listened with rapt attention as the man told her how Humayun lost and then recaptured the fort from the Suris. How Shahenshah made it the capital and started the renovations and how some of the works are still going on. For the first time in her life, Sam was actually liking history. The credit was probably due to the narrator.
Sam was so wrapped up in the history that she did not notice the someone coming from the opposite way until she bumped into them. The force of it sent both the parties stumbling back a bit. Sam looked up to apologize to the other person only to come face to face with an angry and cruel face. The woman's eyes were hard and unforgiving.
Nevertheless, Sam opened her mouth to say sorry. But she was rudely interrupted by the woman. "Insolent girl! Can you not watch where you are going?" The woman said, her face twisting in fury.
Excuse you? What the hell? Sam was all ready to apologize a moment ago. But she put a hold on that as she took in the attitude of that arrogant woman. She hated people like this, who looked down on others just because they had been born with wealth.
So she decided to do the opposite of an apology. "No, actually. Walking with my eyes closed is a bit of a hobby of mine, I'm afraid." Out of the corner of her eye, Sam could see the maid gaping at her. Huh, the woman must be important to warrant such a reaction.
The woman frowned, confused at first. But then her fury came back with a vengeance as she realized that Sam was being sarcastic. She turned to the other person who was walking with her, who, now that Sam noticed, was a eunuch. She had heard that queens used to have eunuchs to serve them. Sam had never seen an eunuch before as she had grown up in America where eunuchs were next to none. Needless to say, Sam felt a bit uncomfortable though she was careful to hide it.
Anyways, back to reality. "Hoshiyar, who is this impudent girl who dares to talk back to me?"
Hoshiyar rushed to answer his mistress. "Your Highness, this is Shahenshah's newest wife, Meera Begum."
Sam's temper flared to life. "Sam. My name is Sam. You would do well to remember that." She was tired and sick of everyone calling her Meera. That name was reserved only for those closest to her heart, namely her mom and dad.
"Fiesty." The woman smirked. "But that will not help you here. You need to know your place if you want to survive here. And you can start by bending down and take my necklace off the floor."
Sam looked down and there indeed was a necklace. But it was not on the ground. It was on a slightly unbalanced wooden planning that must have been forgotten there.
Sam smirked. She knew exactly what she wanted to do. "Sure," she said and bent down pretending to reach for the necklace and then she let out a sudden gasp as if some kind of pain hit her suddenly. She placed a hand on her waist and stood up straight with a fake grimace on her face.
"My waist is stuck." Sam said with a little too sweet smile. "It seems even my body cannot bow down to arrogant people. But don't worry I will get your necklace." She then stomped her foot on the plank which made the plank jerk up a bit and as a result, the necklace went flying in the air.
Sam caught the necklace with her quick reflexes. She inspected the necklace and found that it was really beautiful. A work of stones and rubies studded together with a small diamond in the middle. In her time, these kinds of jewelleries woukd be worth millions of dollars.
She looked at the woman and smirked. "Here," she said and threw the necklace at the woman. It would have hit her face had she not caught it at the nick of time. She looked so startled at the sudden projectile that it was almost comical, had it not been for the uncontrollable anger mixed in the expression.
"Beadab." She almost screamed. "Do you know who I am? I am the Begum-e-Khaas of Shahenshah and the ruler of this harem. You are nothing but a child. You will learn to respect me. Or I will make your life here a living hell." Wow, and Sam thought Stacey was a bitch.
Sam was calm during the entire rant. She met the woman's gaze evenly. "I may be a child by age, but I assure you my mind is not. You want my respect? Earn it."
With that said, she took hold of the maid's hand and walked away from the woman without a backward glance. As soon as they reached far enough no to be heard by the woman, Sam turned towards the maid to ask who the woman was. But she was interrupted by the maid.
"I cannot believe you did that." Sam frowned in confusion. Thinking that her expression was one of anger at being interrupted, the maid nervously stepped back and bowed her head. "Forgive me, Begum. I did not mean to ..."
"It's okay," Sam waved off the apology. She was not going to mad at someone just for speaking what's on their mind. "What do you mean?" She asked the girl about her previous statement.
The girl hesitated a bit, but answered. "That was Ruqaiya Begum, Shahenshah's Cheif Wife. Shahenshah rules over Hindustan and she rules over Shahenshah's mind. They have been married since they were nine and Shahenshah gives in to every whims and demands of hers."
Sam nodded but sensed that the there was something else. "What else?" She asked.
The maid bit her lip in hesitation. Sam smiled. "It's okay. You can tell me."
After a split second, the maid made her decision. "She is the ruler of this harem and she loves to control everyone here. And if someone doesn't listen to her, she makes them suffer. Also ..." She trailed off, wondering if it's a good idea to say what she was thinking. But a reassuring nod from Sam had her spilling the rest of the beans. "Shahemnshah listens to her in regards of women. If she tells him that she doesn't want him with a woman, Shahenshah will not even look at that woman again."
Sam raised her eyebrows in surprise. Well, that was knew. "Really?" She asked. "I thought Shahenshah did what he wanted and to hell with everyone else."
The maid nodded. "He does. But there are only a few people in his life that he listens to. His Ammijaan, Badi Ammi and Begum Ruqaiya. Besides, he has countless women throwing themselves at his feet. So when his childhood friend and wife tells him to stay away from a particular woman, well ... he cares for her much more than he cares for those women, if at all."
Sam nodded. So, an arrogant and cruel king who only mostly listened to his arrogant wife/childhood friend who was a control freak and power hungry bitch and they both did what they want, consequences be damned. Yup, that about summed it up. What a screwed up couple!!! God, how had this become her life in the span of a month?
Sam shook her head. All these thoughts were becoming depressing. "Enough of this. Now I do believe you were to show me to my room."
The maid let out a relieved sigh at the subject change and nodded. She quicky took the lead again and began guiding Sam through the halls. After a left and two rights, they finally reached their destination.
When they got there, Sam saw that Lakshmi was already there, unpacking the bags and getting everything in order. Sam entered the chambers and again gaped in wonder at the beautiful designs all over the prlace. The room was as big as her room in the mansion in Washington, where she used to live.
That seemed a lifetime ago now. She only hoped she qould one day get back to her dad, her time and her home. 'But this is your time and home.' A small voice at the back of her head said. She brutally smashed the thought down. She had a life waiting for her, family and friends. It would do her no good to settle here and attach herself to people. She would go back to her time one day.
"Sam, are you okay?" Lakshmi's voice pulled her out of her thoughts. She looked concerned. God, who was Sam fooling? She had already attached herself to Lakshmi. Lakshmi was probably the only one she would miss when she went back to her time.
She quickly sent Lakshmi a reassuring nod to show that she was fine. She turned to the other maid and opened her mouth to thank her for guiding her to the chambers. But then she realised she didn't know her name. Sam wanted to smack herself for her tactlessness. She had spent the last 15 minutes talking to the girl and she didn't even know her name.
"I am sorry, but what is your name?" She asked the maid. For the second time that day, Sam got a strange look, the first one being from the Hakima Sahiba.
The maid quickly composed herself and answered. "My name is Nirja."
Sam smiled. "Well, thank you for guiding me here, Nirja. God knows I would not have been able to walk through this maze of a palace without help." The maid, now known as Nirja, seemed genuinely surprised.
"'Twas my duty, Begum Sahiba." She said and bowed her head.
Sam put a finger under her chin and pressed a bit indicating that she wanted her to look up. The maid complied. "I appreciate the help nonetheless. You have my thanks. It's a good thing to have, you know, a Queen's gratitude. Who knows? It might get you out of trouble one day." Sam said and winked, hoping to lighten the mood. It seemed to worked as Nirja giggled and nodded.
Then a thought struck Sam. She could keep Nirja as her personal maid. It would help to have someone with her who knew much about the palace and it's residents.
"Nirja, how would you like to be my personal maid?" Sam asked and watched with amusement as Nirja's eyes wenyt as wide a saucers. Then Nirja nodded eagerly making Sam smile. But before she could say anything else, a guard, who was also an eunuch, came in.
"Begum Sahiba, forgive the interruption, but the royal tailor is here to see you." The guard said.
Sam frowned. "What? Why?"
"To prepare your clothes for the celebration."
"What celebration?"
"The celebration of Shahenshah's wedding."
"His latest wedding, you mean? The one with me?"
The guardian nodded hesitantly. Sam rolled her eyes. "Does he celebrate every time he marries?" She asked.
The guard answered cautiously, "Mostly yes." Sam rolled her eyes again. Typically Mughal King.
"Fine, let her in." The guard nodded and outside only to come back a few moments later with a middle aged woman.
The woman bowed. "Adaab, Begum Sahiba. I am here to ..."
Sam interrupted her. "Yes, I know. Clebration. Clothes. Now do what you came here to do."
The woman nodded and took out some clothes from her satchel to show them to Sam. Sam might have been irritated about the celebration but she was a girl. Looking at the beautiful clothes with colorful embroidery and stones embedded in them, her inner shopping mania was screaming. Some of the excitement must have shown on her face as the tailor smiled at her knowingly.
She quickly started ruffling through the clothes to see which on would catch her interest. After a couple of tries she found the perfect one. She would've chosen a green one earlier but after finding out that green was 'her husband's' favourite color she decided not to chose that out of spite.
The cloth she chose was beautiful and fit her perfectly. So there was no need for adjustments. She also chose a set of clothes for Lakshmi and Nirja each, despite their numerous protests.
After everything was done, the tailor said, "Is there anything else you need, Begum Sahiba?"
Sam thought for a moment and then nodded. "If I showed you a new kind of cloth and told you how to make it, would you be able to make one by tonight?"
The tailor, though confused, nodded. Sam grinned like a Cheshire Cat. "Fantastic. Come with me."
Jalal POV
He was waiting in Ruqaiya's chamber do her to come back from wherever she was. He was surprised when she suddenly stormed into the room in anger. She was furious. Someone would suffer at the hands of her today, he could tell by her expression. Ruqaiya did not notice him until she was snatched by her waist.
Jalal buried his nose at the crook of her neck and inhaled the familiar scent of his wife. He nuzzled her to calm her down. "What happened to anger you so much that you wouldn't even notice me?"
"Your newest wife happened." Ruqaiya spat in anger.
Jalal sighed. He should have known. His Rajvanshi wives were always causing trouble. "What did she do?"
"She is even more insolent than Jodha." Ruqaiya answered. And then she told him what happened. How she and his young begum bumped into each other and how she was insulted. Jalal did not know whether to laugh in amusement or scream in rage.
Amusement because no one contradicted Ruqaiya the way Sam did, even Jodha. And rage because that girl dared to insult his closest friend. After a bit of a conflict, his friendship won against his amusement and he settled for rage.
"She will pay for this, Ruqaiya. I promise." Ruqaiya nodded, satisfied. And then she gave mischevious smile before she smashed their lips together. Jalal smiled and kissed back, their lips and tongues moving in perfect sync due to years of experience with each other.
Jalal broke the kiss and carried Ruqaiya to the bed. They both quickly removed their clothes to explore each other's familiar bodies and got lost in each other's passionate embrace, Ruqaiya hoping that perhaps this would be the time she would conceive a child.
After a passionate hour of lovemaking, Jalal let Ruqaiya sleep the exhaustion off and he left for his chambers. The celebration was in a few hours and he had to get ready. He smirked. The celebration. Another opportunity to humiliate the Princess of Malwa.
As he thought of different ways to make the Princess miserable, he stopped when he heard the said Princess's name. He turned to look for the source and found two maids standing in a corner and talking. They hadn't noticed him due to a wall in their line of sight. The maids were talking about Meera Begum.
"Yes, Meera Begum is very different." One of the maids was answering a previously asked question.
"I heard that she made you her personal maid, Nirja. Is she kind?" The other maid asked.
"Yes, Radha. She is very kind. She even asked my name and thanked me for showing her her chambers, even though I was orderded to." The newly dubbed Nirja almost squealed in delight.
'Interesting', Jalal thought. Most queens did not even bother to look at their servants properly, let alone know their name. Meera Begum was indeed different.
"She is very much like Jodha Begum. They would be good friends." Radha was saying.
Jalal frowned. Now that would be a problem. He did not want them being friends. That was too harmful to his plans. He would have to create a rift between them somehow.
But he would think about that tomorrow. For now, the only thing he would think about was how to humiliate his newest Begum in front of the whole court without having an incident like before.
He walked away when he saw that the maids had finished their conversation. He was in no mood for their incessant groveling that was sure to occur if they found out he was listening to them.
As he walked towards his chambers, he saw Rahim, his 5 years old charge, running towards him. Rahim's father, Bairam Khan was Jalal's mentor and father figure. When he died, Jalal married his widowed wife, Salima Begum, to give her and her son protection from power hungry jackals.
Jalal smiled. Rahim could light up the darkest of days with just one smile. Rahim came up to him and glared, though it just made him look more adorable.
"Shahenshah, I am angry with you."
"Really? What offense did I commit to warrant such wrath?"
"You did not introduce me to your new Begum."
"New Begum? Meera?"
"Yes. I want to see her. I heard she had a beautiful face and beautiful voice."
Beautiful voice. Now that could work as his tool of humiliation. Jalal smirked. "Rahim, can you do something for me? I promise I will introduce you to Meera Begum."
Rahim nodded eagerly. Jalal smiled and bent down to whisper into Rahim's ear. If everything went according to plan, his newest wife would be thoroghly humiliated at the celebration.
