Lashy ..he never can discard the people in his life come what may ...from the start we have seen his immense loyalty be it MA or even Abdul...to make new relationships he shall not discard old ones..that would be the death of a hero ...this whole scenario is quite fascinating...am just curious how well can cvs handle from henceforth...just hope they give more shades to lavina's ruqaiyya ...

that is so true😆..uska ek dialogue and ek smirk ..the whole forum loses its sleep 😆..arre even MA cannot understand what is going on in his mind..and if doodh ka kara cannot fathom toh hum kaun se khet ki mooli hai 😆

my only worry is when he clearly realises about his feelings how on earth will he pacify or can he

Dear Mansi,

A fair and logical analysis, which I am sure is very largely correct. Your posts always remind me of the briefs of a sound and careful lawyer, and as for this one, if I was the judge, I would decide in your favour.

I have always liked and respected Jalal as a character, and I always believed that having had very few relationships in his very troubled life, he attaches tremendous importance to maintaining those that he has, and right now that does NOT include Jodha.

One can love a person, or be obsessed with that person without understanding or being close to him/her, or even liking that person. But friendship is different, especially one of such very long standing as the one he has with Ruqaiya, who has been with him thru thick and thin. Whereas Jodha has not, and in fact so far she has done nothing but take from his, mostly with little on no gratitude.

So, if he were to ditch Ruqaiya now for Jodha because he is of late obsessed with the latter, I would lose all respect for him, whatever the frantic forum might think or feel. I am glad that he is not doing any such thing, and I was amused by all the hyperventilation across the forum last night.

I thought that he was pitch perfect with Ruqaiya yesterday in both their scenes together, especially the second one. He soothes her the way one soothes an angry, miserable child which feels that the parent does not love it.

I would add only one point. Jalal knows Ruqaiya inside out and so he probably discounts her insistence that the only thing she resents is the possible loss of her auda in the palace/harem and that she is NOT jealous and NOT afraid of losing him to Jodha. He realises that the lady doth protest too much. That what Ruqaiya asserts is not true at all, that what she fears in the innermost recesses of her being is precisely that she will lose him to Jodha. Not so much in the physical sense - she does not mind that - but in the psychological sense of having decisive influence on him and his thinking. And that she cannot stand.

Which is why he repeatedly tries to get her to come out and acknowledge that she is indeed jealous of Jodha, and by extension that she cares for him, Jalal, at the emotional level as well. Maybe he does that because it would be cathartic for Ruqaiya.

But perhaps, after having rejected the very idea all his life, he now seeks and needs that expression of emotional attachment from his dearest friend. Jodha does not love him or even care for him, and he cares nothing for any other begum. So perhaps, now that he has hitherto unknown feelings for Jodha, he also has this strange new need for emotional support and caring, and for that, whom else can he turn to but his Gatti?

Lastly, and you have touched on this, he sees that this whole balancing and adjusting exercise is vital for preventing Ruqaiya from going off the rails and perhaps taking her frustrations out on Jodha.

I do not see what Jalal is doing as a preparatory exercise to help Ruqaiya adjust to a life without him . The very charming example you have given would not really apply here, for Ruqaiya will always be a part of Jalal's life, and a very dear one, as his chief begum. She is not going anywhere. Jodha will have her own compartment and Ruqaiya hers. But Ruqaiya has to be brought round to accepting and not furiously resenting the very large part of Jalal that Jodha will eventually appropriate.

That is what Jalal is now working towards, even as the contours of his eventual relationship with Jodha are as yet unclear. He needs to keep his Gatti on a reasonably even keel all thru and that will take all his skills at cajoling, charming and persuading her that her importance for him will never be diminished come what may.

And if in the process, he has to indulge in a bit of suppressio veri at one time (as not revealing to Ruqiaya that it was he who told his Ammijaan about Jodha's birthday) , and a bit of suggestio falsi at another, why, one never tells children more than what is good for them, does one?

Shyamala

Shyamala,
I liked your ideas a lot and I did want to hear all the opinions on this topic since I knew that what I was seeing may be just one of the many angles possible.
The fact that we both agree on is that Jalal shows enough caring for Ruqaiaya even if he is attracted to Jodha - why he does that is where we may differ. I may see it as an "easing of her pain anticipating change in his own priorities", while you may see it as because of his "upholding the friendships he has without shoving them over for the new in his life". Depending on which point of view we take of his "motivations" for what he did, the actions he actually took on screen are read by either of us from that point of view - either as helping her manage her boiling point or treating her gently as a child!
Anyway I can understand both points of view well and appreciate them. At best we are all guessing anyway, because neither the Creatives, nor the characters themselves have confided in any of us!
I am with you in that while the example of the other couple I took involved a divorce from the old partner, in this case Ruq is going nowhere even after Jodha-Jalal may become an item. So she will be there, and she will have her own turf and Jodha will have her own turf.
Ultimately, if we were to de-glamorize what's happening its a simple "turf war" ... and till the blurry lines become clear to all concerned - and especially to Jalal himself perhaps - the wives will be in turmoil. We therefore do need a track that demarcates turfs well, and I don't know if this pregnancy track will help that!
I am now waiting to see how this whole pregnancy track pans out - who did it, why, and what the fallout of it will be to the Jalal-Ruq relationship and the Jalal-Jodha relationship.
At this point one further idea strikes me as a lateral way of looking at things ...
We are always looking at Jodha and Ruq as ancillary items to Jalal and seeing them as hyphenated people: Jalal-Ruq or Jalal-Jodha. However, the best way to deal with situations like this is for Jodha-Ruq to form their own equation of comfort, irrespective of where Jalal is in their lives. That would be a more mature, sustainable way of solving such turf wars between the warring parties without always mixing in the third common element between them whose allegiance is always pulled at from both sides, till the third elelment knows not where he belongs and adds to the confusion.
But I don't know if the Creatives will ever do that kind of thing!

Finally I found someone who is as passionate towards the serial as me. I love JA! But I never do such in depth analysis of the serial 😛
I really, really want to commend you for writing this up. I was thinking that Jalal was just playing along with Ruqs. But I understand your viewpoint.
From the start I have observed and noted that Ruqs was not, is not and will ever not be in love with Jalal. She loves Shenshah Jalal-ud-din Muhammad and the power he holds. Moreover she does not see more of herself with him than as his begum and friend. Both of these things matter to her the most. If ever Jalal, or so to say Akbar, was ever dethroned then Ruqs would never have been there for him. She loves power, she cares for the king. She does not like being a regular begum, she dislikes a common person.
I really applaud you for this post 👏 Thank-you so very much for posting a post which is sensible, mature and does not contain any of that fake pregnancy rubbish.
PM me if you write any more posts 😊

(maybe for different reasons) But, I liked the scene for the reasons you've stated above and a bit more...

I would lose respect for Jalal if he discarded Ruqaiyya for Jodha too...yuck! It would only indicate he could discard Jo for another younger female some years down the line...[By discard I don't mean literally discard, but ignore, slight, neglect etc]

If he can hold on to Ruqs - (for now possibly the most imp person in his life) place her and assure her of a position in his life that she'd never be shifted from...it only means once he starts treasuring his relationship with Jo then no one can ever shake the foundations of that relationship either..i.e. that none can take up Jo's spot in his life in future either!

True, the means in which he placates Ruqaiyya and Jodha are different and CONFOUNDING to many - his choice of words, tone and facial expressions are always an enigma...
However, at this point - I'm just clinging on to the fact that he indulges Ruqaiyya's tantrums (in a slightly different manner) just like he indulges Jo's tantrums too!
He may not use the appropriate choice of words/smiles at every juncture but his intent as of now that I see it to be is to NOT let the importance of one relationship slip just because the other one is gaining significance in his life and fast.

Lashy, there's a big difference between saying "Jalal discard Ruq for Jodha" and "Jalal prepares Ruq to accept Jodha". The latter is the point on which a lot of people feel more comfortable. If you took the former approach not only is it not right, it is unfeasible when in those times it was not possible to overthrow a wife as easily with a divorce or something. At the same time, it can happen that Jalal can be preparing Ruq to be ready to share him with Jodha where both she and Jodha would feel secure in clearly earmarked territories.
