Chapter 8

Jalal turned to Jodha as he spoke - I know how much you love ammijaan begam Jodha however now that we are alone you can be honest with me, do you really want to go to Ajmer.

Jodha was taken aback but she controlled her anger and said, Shahensha, why would you think I am not being honest, I do want to go to Ajmer and since you heard my prayer to Krishna Bhagwan, the Lord has given me a wonderful opportunity to repent for my actions. I have also heard that ajmer is a very pavitra sthaan and being there would give me some solace unless you do not want me to go with you. In that case you may proceed to Ajmer and I will go with Ammijaan at a later stage. Jodha felt hurt that he doubted her sincerity.

Jalal - Jodha begam please don't jump to conclusions, if you are happy to accompany me then I am happy to take you along.

They were interrupted by moti who brought the breakfast sent by hamida bano. Placing the trays on the respective tables moti exited sensing the uneasiness between the two. They both sat down quietly facing each other eating their meal whilst stealing glances at each other.

It was decided that the very next morning at the break of dawn the shahensha together with queen jodha will leave for ajmer, the news travelled quickly through the fort, whilst some were happy for the king and queen, there were others who burned with jealousy and others who began plotting against the king.

Before leaving jodha's chamber jalal handed her a jeweled box, she hesitated at first but seeing the shahensha holding the box in the outstretched hands with determination she took it and before a syllable could escape her moist pink lips, jalal placed his finger on it

Sshhh jodha begam no questions please - I want you to keep this, it is a family heirloom and it would suit you best. Also you have donated all your jewelry except this, pointing to the mangalsutra around her neck, He picked it up and gingerly rolled it between his fingers. This must be very dear to you he smirked as he gave her an intense stare.

He then made his way to the diwan -e - khaas where his ministers were awaiting his arrival and to begin the day's proceedings.

Jodha opened the box and a small gasp escaped her lips, she has worn exquisite jewels before but this was beyond compare. A three tier haar with almond shapes emeralds studded with diamonds shone brilliantly almost blinding her. The earrings and bracelets were equally exquisite. She was elated but at the same time confused as to why the shahensha would gift her something so sentimental. Nevertheless she appreciated the gift and adorned herself with it. No doubt the exquisite jewels enhanced the fair skinned queen; her hazel eyes shone even brighter making her more alluring.

Jodha had promised little Rahim that she would spend the entire day with him, hence she made her way to Salima begam's chamber, upon entering she saw Rahim giving Salima begam a hard time, she was trying to make him have his milk which he was refusing.

Kan -e - Kano, yeh kya hai, aap apni ammijaan kho aise parishaan karoge kya? Agar aise baat hai toh mai aap ke saath nahi kheloongi, hum chalte hain.

Hearing what his ammijaan said Rahim quickly took the milk from Salima and drank it in one go. Both queens laughed at his antics. Holding Jodha's hands he took her out to the palace gardens where he wanted her to play with him.

From flying kites, to throwing balls, story-telling, rhyming, Jodha entertained the little prince to his heart's content. At times Salima joined in, Hamida Gul bandan and Jiji anga watched them from the terrace as they walked past, seeing the love between the two Hamida's heartfelt wish was to see Jodha playing with her children in the same manner.

Rahim - Choti ammijaan abh hum chupa chupi khelna chahti hoo, hum aapke aankh par pati bandenge aur aap hume doodna hoga.

Jodha - aache teek yeh aakri khel hai, shyam honewale hai.

Jodha helped Rahim tie the black silk cloth on her eyes. Rahim giggled as he teased her by tugging at her duppata end, jodha too laughed as she tried to catch him.

The shahensha had completed his daily duties and was returning to his chambers when he spotted jodha and rahim in the garden. Jodha was laughing as she tried catching Rahim and Rahim teasing her.

Jodha's face glowed with warmth, her cheeks were rosy, her moist pink lips slightly parted - jala was awestruck, unable to resist the sight her walked towards them silently. Jalal gestured to Rahim to keep quiet as he purposely walked towards jodha.

Jodha who was obviously bending slighing to find Rahim catch the end of jalals robe, thinking him to be Rahim she pulled on the robe saying

Pakar liya - ab hum aapko jane nahi denge, apne hume bahouth chera naa, isliye hum aapko dand denge.

Jalal gestured Rahim to speak up - kaisa dand choti ammijaan?

Hmmm kaisa dand? ek meetha sa pyaara sa dand denge hum apko - hum apne Rahim kho itni sari chuma denge ki aapke gaal lal hojayenge she said giggling in-between.

Pulling her up swiftlyand holding her in a tight embrace whilst removing the patti from her eyes jalal whispered close to her ears - seeing that you caught me instead of Rahim, don't you think that rahim's punishment should be given to me instead. Opening her eyes slowing adjusting to the light she looked up to meet the shahensha's gaze. She shivered at the intensity of his glare, blood rushed to her cheeks making her blush furiously.

Please let me go she whispered her voice squeaking in embarrassment. Holding her even tighter he said " iss dand ke liye hum besabri se intezaar karenge"

Wriggling of out his embrace she caught hold of Rahim and ran towards the palace. Jalal looked longingly after her laughing at her state.

Back in the palace Rahim followed jodha back to her chambers, refusing to leave her. Having given him a bath and then taking a bath herself jodha sat down for her evening puja. Rahim prayed with jodha as she sang aarti. Salima, Jodha and Rahim had supper together in jodha's chambers. Seeing jodha tired from the day's activities salima decided to take Rahim along to her chambers which ofcourse he refused. He wanted to sleep with his choti ammijaan and jodha happily obliged although she was tired and had an early morning ahead.

Salima left her son in jodha's care, wishing her for the night Salima retired to her chambers.

Rahim climbed onto jodha's bed curling up in her lap. Stroking his head she looked at the child with love. Smiling she broke out into a song

mere munna mere chanda

sundar rajkumar

jabse tu aya mere duar

mujko badla badla sa lagta hai sara sansar

mere munna mere chanda (Lataji version)...

Her sweet melodious voice rang through the palace chambers, Rahim drifted into deep slumber as she continued the song.Resting her head against the headboard jodha dozed off.

Jalal who heard the lullaby came to the queen's chamber only to find them both asleep. He smiled at the sight with teary eyes. Suddenly he felt a hand on his shoulder, turning around he saw his mother, Hamida bano with tears streaming down her face.

Sorry for any mistakes and for making you wait so long. Things are pretty hectic - I am moving house!.
