I don't know the selection process but it doesn't seem as random as it could be, it is more strategic.
For those who don't know her work, this is a video from Nach Baliye for that performance. It's not the whole performance but it starts at 0.50

Well unfortunately she was the first out, but in some respect it could not be helped.

This means she ends up with rather simple choreography to match their ability. She cannot produce those wow performances as she hasn't got a person who can pull that off, plus nor a partner with a huge fan base to keep them in long enough to show improvement.
