Yes & No both.
Yes because it shows that emotion of the song u r performing.
No because the main thing being seen in ur dance not ur expression or lip sync..

If they are lacking, do they hinder that dance and the concept? Yes.

If Basanti dancing to Jab tak hain jaan, looks blank, do I feel the tension in that scene? No.

Agree. But movie is a little different. They tell a story in a movie. Stage they grade you on your dancing then the story.

Good Point.

But if the concept on stage is a story, does one need expression?

think expressions r very very important...if u dance with a blank look or tension on ur face it kills d beauty of d performance....n I think its even more important for stage acts...lip sync is necessary as well but not as much as expressions...

It depands on the type of dance form you are performing in, dance being the most important factor. Karan didnt lip-sync in 'maria' song coz it was not needed ther.

The aesthetics of dance Basic motives: self-expression and physical release
One of the most basic motives of dance is the expression and communication of emotion. People—and even certain higher animals—often dance as a way of releasing powerful feelings, such as sudden accesses of high spirits, joy, impatience, or anger. These motive forces can be seen not only in the spontaneous skipping, stamping, and jumping movements often performed in moments of intense emotion, but also in the more formalized movements of "set" dances, such as tribal war dances or festive folk dances. Here the dance helps to generate emotions as well as release them.
