Agreed! It does seem like certain dance forms are given preference over others in these shows. I remember I had loved Jayati Bhatia's Orissi dance on "Daiyya re daiyya" and was really surprised at the marks she was given. Everything was bang-on, the way the Scorpio theme was executed, the expressions, the grace... Maybe it was the "acrobatics" that were missing?

For me, dance is a form of expression, so it should convey a certain image, story, thought or emotion. I love Indian classical dance, because I've been learning kathak since I was six, so slight bias there.. but mostly, what really draws me in the dance is what it is conveying. Forms like paso doble and lyrical hip-hop, I find absolutely enthralling! And it's not necessarily about whether the performance has a storyline, it's about what the dance itself says.. about how the dancer understands and uses the potential of the different parts of his/her body to express so many different things, as well as how well he/she is able to understand and respect the essence of different dance forms.

I have nothing against the acrobatics. They are beautiful and very difficult to execute.. I admire them greatly, but it makes little sense to me to have them there just for the sake of it. If they're part of what the dance is conveying, then great. But otherwise, to me at least, it just all seems very mechanical. No heart in the performance. To actually have those as criteria for what a good dance performance is, would be even more senseless.. because dance is so much more. Madhuri Dixit, of all people, should know.

Then again, this is a reality show, and I don't have high expectations from reality shows anyway. Everything seems to be faked and orchestrated. The very fact that the judges almost always agree on the scores is kind of dubious, the whole public voting thing, even more so. It is highly unlikely that the ultimate results represent anything about the true calibre or talent of the participants. At most, it will come down to how popular the celebrities are, for whatever reason.

I just watch because I love dance (:

Absolutely agree... Let me add these innumerable props and ariel, pole, trampoline etc also to the list!!
Can people really stand on the floor and dance individually with their own body and expressions anymore???

Dancing for me is grace, expression, flexibility depending only on the style you are performing, enjoying the song, song selection and concept. And Madhuri is to me the perfect dancer someone who has charisma and the grace to carry anything.

Exactly!!! And I fail to see those expressions on Isha's face. When she giggles, I am like 😕 Even if she's doing those gymnastics, I cant enjoy them and I am like Oh no, not again! For the same reason, I'd give Bharti a browny pie because she atleast gives those adayein and nazakat.. and the result is we enjoy her performance!😆 I'd go for expressions than the stretching and circus acts anyday because dance is all about expressing in my opinion. Ofcourse, losing participants like Avneet and Shibani over Bharti is sad but thats another thing.

I personally enjoyed Rashmi's performance. Yakshagana dance form is hardly ever attempted on reality shows like such and my parents got all excited on watching them perform to that dance form. Ofcourse, I wish they had a mytho story instead of Cindrella tale as a backdrop but yes, I too felt that a mark more was what they deserved for the hatke theme.

You are absolutely right. These days dance has just been rediced to lifts, acrobats and gymnastics. Gone are those days of classical, folk dances. If you have judges like Remo who only promote western dance forms where would the participants go... I really liked Rashmi'sdance today but the judges did not

I had been wondering about dance vs acrobatics for long time. Glad that you made this topic. I don't know if acrobatics falls under dance category. But for me, who loves dancing(not trained though), I dislike acrobatics in dancing. Few lifts or stunts are OK and are necessary nowadays, but doing it whole the time is something I don't like. If you have watched DID little masters 2, Om usually did gymnastics and acrobats in his performances, which had been hot topic of discussion in DID forum, whether to call him gymnast or dancer.
So I guess, it is all matter of perception for general audience.
If there is anyone in this forum who has studied dance, then I would like to request you to present your opinion here.

Now on topic: I think we should look at the dance in totallity. Look at the dance from other angle too. In India has its own indegieneous dance forms, that does not mean those dance are the only dance form on the earth. All dances are highly influenced by the local culture. To me all are dance form although they are different. I respect all dance forms whether it is indian, africa, latin or american. Even in India there is tribal dance forms apart from mainstream. I really like the dance show to bring all form of dance to our knowledge. We need to look at if we are branding a dance as gymnastic or we really mean it. Bottom line with all dances is the requirement of grace, body parts movement etc.
