Making a song and dance on TV

Caught in the act: Armaan (Apoorva Agnihotri) and Jassi (Mona Singh)in Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin
While films are increasingly doing away with lavish song-and-dance sequences, television serials are incorporating long-forgotten film songs in their daily dramas.

Added to the regular rona dhona in the shows, these tracks are going down well with viewers.
Creative directors are injecting popular ditties to underscore dramatic high points.

Recently, Kkusum featured the agony of Kkusum and Abhay, accompanied by the title track from the film Chalte Chalte.

The mukhra was the same as the original (to have easy recall value) and the remaining verses were rewritten to suit that particular soap.

Says Gayatri Gil, an assistant creative director with Balaji Telefilms, "This is a programming style that enhances the episode and makes it livelier and more audience-friendly."

Added to the title tracks, soaps and serials are getting associated with particular tracks — Thoda sa pyar hua hain (Kahiin To Hoga) and Kya pyar karoge mujhse (Kasautii Zindagi Kay), securing more popularity for these songs.

With serial makers having exhausted the shooting-abroad concept, especially Mauritius and Australia, this latest trend is another attempt to give their shows a larger-than-life effect.

Another example is the song Tu meri jaan, featuring Jassi and Armaan, finally bitten by the love bug. Adds Gursheel Walia, creative director at Sony, "We introduced this song and had an impressive video to mark the turning point in Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin."

Can we expect original songs soon, with telly actors running around trees? Says Sandiip Sikcand, creative head, Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii and K Street Pali Hill, "These tracks are an added feature that comes with the package. But we don't plan to have original songs."

Popular TV tunes

1. Kya pyar karoge mujhse — Kasautii Zindagi Kay
2. Dil ne yeh kaha hai dil se — Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi
3. Aye mere humsafar — Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii
4. Thoda sa pyar hua hai — Kahiin To Hoga
5. Raja ko rani se pyar ho gaya — K Street, Pali Hill
6. Lambi judai — Kaisa Yeh Pyar Ha

Yes I love that part too...

Also first time an entire music Album is dedicated to the lead characters of a TV show. Apu and Mona are lucky indeed.

😆 lol, Ketaki! My favorite part too! 😛

And yeah, I agree JD, Apu and Mona should consider themselves lucky since this is probably the first time they had a music album for a Hindi soap!
