ENTRY#2
I sat nervously in my pink wedding lehnga, fingering my engagement ring. The diamond seemed like a heavy rock, fettering my freedom. I looked down at my hands, resplendent in their intricate mehndi patterns. I looked every bit the demure little bride. No one could have guessed the storms breaking in my bosom.
Outside, the dishes were frothing in their containers, guests were arriving in their finery, and the mandap waited for the auspicious ceremony. Everything was ready.
Everything except myself, that is.
I couldn't fathom why I had agreed to marry Amit. It was an arranged match, all right, and he had seemed a nice guy. I didn't love him—maybe that was why I had that niggling doubt in my mind when I said yes—but I thought we could get along well. Until last night when I received a phone call from a very drunken, very belligerent fianc. Apparently his "well-meaning" friends had been teasing him mercilessly about marrying a girl who was better qualified than him and had ambitions equalling his own. His very sensitive male ego had been bruised.
"You will not work after marriage, do you hear?" he bellowed down the receiver. "A woman's place is inside the home. You will stay at home and look after my kids….that's final!"
I tried to say something but he had slammed down the phone, obviously pleased at having had the last word. I pursed up my lips. Maybe it was the best thing, after all, that I had come to know this guy for the jerk he was before I bound myself to him. He might have had the last word, but I was going to have the last laugh.
It was no use convincing my parents at this eleventh hour. The milieu of relatives would make light of my misgivings and not allow them to think for themselves. I could expect no sympathy if I canceled the marriage. The only thing to do was to run away. I would go and stay with my friend Reshma at her hostel till the storm had blown over. I had already prepared a note for my parents, explaining my reasons. And I knew I could count on Such (yes, apni IF-wali Such!) to convince my parents.
Such came pressed my shoulder in reassurance. I whispered, "You are sure it will be all right?"
She nodded. "Don't worry…I have made all the arrangements. The snake-charmer will arrive and mingle with the guests. As soon as you sit down for the mantras, he will let loose his king cobra. Don't worry—its fangs have been removed and it is quite harmless. But it will scare the daylights out of that ninny Amit. And I have this," she continued, taking out a small packet. "Once I throw this powder in the fire, there will be so much smoke that no one will be able to see anyone else. You will have to run for it then."
I nodded, and squeezed her hand. I knew I could count on Such.
The baraat arrived, Amit grinning pompously on his horse. They were welcomed and led to the mandap. My bridesmaids gently guided me towards it. Trembling, I sat down next to Amit, ignoring him.
As soon as the priest started reciting the mantras, I looked desperately at Such. She made a reassuring gesture with her hands.
"Snake! Snake!"shrieked one of the guests.
Everyone's eyes turned in horror to the menacing-looking king cobra, who had arrived from nowhere, it seemed, and was now sitting, hood raised, directly in front of me and Amit. The blubbering coward gave the loudest scream of all and started to inch away. The snake seemed more interested in me than in him. I was exasperated. I knew it was harmless, but still, I couldn't get up and run with it right in front of me. And I wanted Amit a little further away.
Clenching my teeth against its slimy touch, I picked up the cobra and flung it towards Amit. He gave a piercing shriek and sank to the ground. Such chose this moment to throw the powder in the fire, making it blaze up and emit dense smoke that sent all the guests into confusion. I took the opportunity to steal away to the washroom.
Once inside, I quickly changed my attire. I was wearing capri pants under my lehnga. All I had to do was to take it off, put on a T-shirt over my blouse, tie my hair in a ponytail, tear of whatever jewellery was visible, slip on a pair of sneakers and sneak off through the back door. I hailed the nearest available taxi and drove off to freedom.
It was not until the next morning that I plucked up the courage to call Such. She informed me that my parents had been understandably upset, but my note and Such's explanations had calmed them down. Amit had become the laughing-stock for alleging that the snake was not a cobra but a python who had swallowed his bride. Once things settled down in a day or two, I could come back.
"Whew!" I gasped. "Thank heavens everything is okay. It is all due to you, Such….and that snake-charmer, too! Thank him for me, will you?"
"Er, Anjali…" Such cleared her throat. "There is something I should tell you. The snake-charmer did not manage to arrive after all."
"What do you mean? The snake was there, for heaven's sake!"
"Yes, it was there. But it was a real snake, a poisonous one, that had somehow entered the mandap. You threw it at Amit not realizing it was dangerous. It was a good thing nothing happened to him."
"Such! Do you mean to say that I actually held a REAL snake in my hand for a few seconds?"
"I'm afraid so, Anjali. Good for you: I had no idea you could be so brave; though, of course, you did not know the truth. But it was fun seeing the expression on Amit's face!" she ended with a chuckle.
The phone receiver seemed to have turned as cold as the slimy skin of the cobra I had unknowingly held in my hand the previous night. Sure, I had managed to escape from my wedding. But the memory of that touch would not escape me so easily.

Once a while a famous king ruled the BOLLYWOOD Country and a small girl stayed in that village. She dreamed once she gets elder will get married to the king. When she grew on she realized the king is too older than she is. Then again she saw another king then she thought he would be ideal. But he was married. Then she met another King who ruled her heart but lately she came to know he is also married. Lastly she got an unmarried prince but he was involved with another lady. The girl's heart broken. The speciality is that all the Kings and Prince name start with A. Day goes on and few days back there was a dancing competition and she was keep on voting to her favorite participant. She got so many requests from far away place for a voting link. Mostly her friends were girls and 1/2 request was there from a prince whom she thought a girl she love a new friend too a fan of the girl's favourite one. She gave him link, called honey 😳 and hugged 😳 unknowing that he is a boy . When the Man proposed her she became bhagmati. Shadhi tak baat gayi nahi
