MONA SINGH tells Sarah Salvadore how much she misses her old Jassi look, dating desires and taking up films as a career
• So how does the new Jassi feel after her makeover?
I was a nervous wreck during the makeover phase. It became a national issue and was termed the mother of all makeovers. This could have either made me look sexy and seductive, which the audience might have not accepted, or it could have made me look pretty enough to be the girl-next-door-turned model. Thankfully they made me look the latter. My makeover did not happen at one go. It was gradual. We broke it to the
audience gently. When I was in Mauritius, I received messages from elderly people saying 'my daughter is looking very pretty.' It was very touching.
• Don't you miss your old get up?
Very much. Sometimes I tell the producers 'please give me back my old chashma because I cannot act without them.' The most painful thing about the entire get up was the braces that I had to wear daily. At times they were so tight that my gums used to bleed. Most of the time, my producers have to remind me that I have to touch up my make up. But the fact is Jasmeet misses the old Jassi.
• You mean to say your real name is Jasmeet?
Exactly. My elder sister's name is Sona. So people used to call me Mona. In an
industry where people tend to forget you the moment you turn your back, do you think they would have remembered a long name like Jasmeet? Instead Mona was short. After Jassi became famous and I began to tell people my real name, they found it hard to believe it.
• Who are your friends on the sets?
All of my co-stars. Apurva who plays Armaan Sir comes up to me everyday to suggest which hairstyle would look good on me. Rakshanda and myself party every day. It's difficult to call her Mallika maam every time we are shooting. But my closest friend is Gaurav Gera who plays Nandu.
• Has your fan following changed in anyway after the makeover?
Now it's more of male fans than female ones. I receive messages from them asking me to go out on a date and so on.
• So are you dating someone?
No. I'm shooting for at least 18 hours a day. There is no time left for dating. I don't mind going out on a date but I want to be fair to the person whom I'm going around with.
• How much of a financial wizard are you in real life?
Finance is my dad's department. I keep telling my producers not to show me as a super intelligent person on-screen. In fact, I always goofed up the lines where I had to make the financial statement in the board room.
• Are you looking forward to doing films?
Of course. I would like to do a good comedy film. I'm open to any kind of roles as long as it excites me. After meeting Shah Rukh and working with Saif, I feel the industry will accept me.
