Mona Singh, better known as Jassi, will soon be seen in a new avatar—as the host of a reality show that aims to give people with physical deformities an improved look. The show, Extreme Makeover, is Sony Entertainment's next reality show after Indian Idol and Fear Factor.
"So far reality TV has been about tear-wrenching stuff. Extreme Makeover is sure to make an impact on the common man. A panel of specialists will first select the distressed disfigured people for whom a medical remedy is possible," says Anupama Mandloi, Sony's programming head. "Unlike other reality shows where the drama begins and ends in every episode, in Extreme Makeover we will go through a long and arduous process of sifting through the candidates, having them undergo treatment and follow-up on their recovery. What viewers will finally see is a condensed version of the entire process whereby the disfigured individuals get a new life."
So wouldn't this entail a huge responsibility for the channel? "We're aware of that. But there's no challenge in doing the same thing over and over again. We're aware that lately we've lagged behind in soaps due to our search for different aspects of the reality genre. We're now ready to correct the imbalance with shows that would hopefully get us back to the top in fiction," she says.
But reality remains Sony's main concern. "In fact, Fear Factor soon goes into another season. We shot the first season in Malaysia. The second season will be shot in Argentina," says Mandloi.
