I have come to a similar outcome regarding these two characters. There is a fine line between those who understand the value of the sacrifices made for them and those who find it mediocre in their selfish nature for more. In the beginning of the show, I had a greater disliking for Ranbir who readily toyed with Shilpa's emotions and provoked Aarav just for the sake of hurting his mother. Yet as his character developed, he was shown to have overwhelming emotions and gratefulness towards Pam. He recognizes her sacrifices, honors and values them. He respects her immensely, he cannot even see her cry, and foremost he considers her pain as his own. He will hurt whatever hurts her. He is selfish but he is not blinded by his motives, his love and priorities are his family. That in its own sense is beautiful and thus a mixed character he has proven to be. He wants his mom's attention and love yet he is hurt by the fact that the woman he once loved the most in life did not once choose him or fight for him. That is what's hurting him and he brings it up often, pointing out how his wounds would not heal easily and so on.
Aarav from the start has been shown to be materialistic, with time this nature of his reached new heights and became more evident. his disrespectful behavior, failure to understand right and wrong, importance of education (Which Ranbir understands very well) or even acknowledge the sacrifices made by his mom puts him in a very negative light. His character so far has only proven to be a selfish character easily swept by money. There is no further depth to his character. At first I believed that he was upset with his mom because she didn't visit him in jail but when he sided with his dad, it was infuriating because his dad wasn't there either. Not to mention that his dad was the reason why he was in jail in the first place but this kid only blamed his mom. Currently his is just being a rich snob whose showing of thee expensive gifts his dad got him, I mean this kid has absolutely no shame. He's just very selfish, hot-tempered, and materialistic.
