OS: Auld Lang Syne
Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind ?
Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and days of auld lang syne ?
Ragini sat in her room her head in a whirl. The past week had gone by very quickly. What with the wedding rituals to be done and the guests to be looked after, she had had little time to reflect on what was happening. Now sitting on her beautifully decorated bed (courtesy: Aagham and Suhaani), she couldn't help but wonder if what had happened was a mistake. Her past came in front of her and she shivered as she remembered that she would have to go through the same heartbreak again once the contract gets over.
For auld lang syne, my dear,
for auld lang syne,
we'll take a cup of kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.
He stood at the door looking at the varied emotions playing on her face. He knew that she would be thinking of their divorce. He clenched his fists. Their divorce had left an ugly wound on his heart and it had not yet healed. This marriage brought back all those painful memories and he felt his heart pain for the first time after years of numbness. He wanted to go and shake her and ask her why she gave him pain but stopped still as he saw her shiver. He remembered how she used to put her arms around him and soothe him whenever he felt nervous before a major surgery. He sighed as he remembered he now had a kindness to return. He gently went near her and kept a hand on his shoulder.
And surely you'll buy your pint cup!
and surely I'll buy mine !
And we'll take a cup o' kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.
She slowly looked up as she felt his hand on her shoulder. Her eyes met his and she saw the same pain she felt in his eyes. She slowly whispered.
"Nachiket?"
"The past few days just rushed by and I didn't have any time to talk to you."
"Yes... Why don't you sit down?"
"Uh... Yes..."
"What do you want to talk about?"
"About things we used to talk about... years ago"
"About us?"
"Yes, about us."
We two have run about the slopes,
and picked the daisies fine ;
But we've wandered many a weary foot,
since auld lang syne.
They sat there silently beside each other trying to think of something fit to say. But words failed to express their agonized hearts. He looked at her fidgeting and gave a short laugh.
"What are you laughing at, Nachiket?"
"At us."
"Us?"
"Yes, I thought of the times we found it hard to keep silent when we were together. Remember, once we talked all night and only realized that we have been talking for seven hours straight when the sun came up?"
"Yes... And do you remember the time you refused to let me sleep because you wanted to recite some poem that you had specially thought out for me and had forgotten."
"Ha Ha... Those lovely days... I still don't remember the words. But I did think some new ones when... uh... when... I... uh...we..."
"We separated."
We two have paddled in the stream,
from morning sun till dine ;
But seas between us broad have roared
since auld lang syne.
"Ragini... I didn't mean to bring back those painful memories. I am sorry."
Ragini looked at him, when had he become so mature? She remembered him as a childish man who refused to apologize even for the mistakes he did. She tried hard to control her tears. He had changed so much over the years.
"It's okay. It is the truth."
Nachiket felt his heart break. Where was his fighter? The brave warrior girl who never took pain as reality but fought hard to bring sunshine and happiness into their lives. She was gone and in the place of her was a broken woman who accepted pain just as it was and didn't fight back. She had changed so much over the years.
"I forgot the truth."
And there's a hand my trusty friend !
And give us a hand o' thine !
And we'll take a right good-will draught,
for auld lang syne.
He took her arms in his and gently bent down and placed his lips on her tiny palms. She looked at him surprised.
"Ragini, whenever you need me, I will be right beside you."
"There is no need for that Nachiket. I can take care of myself."
Nachiket smiled a little. His Ragini was still there somewhere buried deep inside this woman sitting beside him. He promised to himself that he would bring the old Ragini out even if it cost him another heart break. He turned her chin and made her look at her bedside table where a bottle of sleeping pills stood.
"I can see how well you take care of yourself."
Ragini looked away feeling hot tears on her cheeks. She softly said.
"Why, Nachiket? Why are you doing this?"
"For Auld Lang Syne"
