The sutra, i.e. the golden dollar that is inserted in the thread varies in size, design and shape depending on the state, region and other internal divisions. So, in a Telugu marriage, the look of the sutra from the girl's side and the boy's side tends to differ. Sometimes, both parties may mutually agree to have both of same design. The two sutras are tied to different threads and during the marriage, these two threads are tied one after the other with 3 knots each. But, in some families, both the sutras are inserted into the same thread and tied.

To understand better, I am posting this video, a very famous song from one of my favourite Telugu movies, 'Pelli pustakam', literally meaning 'Marriage book'. This song shows an abbreviated version of the Telugu marriage, which otherwise is an elongated procedure.

Meanwhile, another thought occured to me. After the marriage, there is a little ceremony on the 16th day or if necessary, before that. During that ceremony, the two threads and another one of black beads (which is also tied during the marriage), are all removed and the two sutra dollars, black beads and any other beads, if required, are inserted into one stronger turmeric thread or a golden chain (which usually is the case nowadays), to make one chain of mangalsutra. Guess who helps the bride in this? The sister-in-law! So, Arnav tied the thread and after some days, Anjali replaced it with a golden ring! 😆 Yes, feel like dancing, right? I know, we've gone totally crazy. 😆 But, who cares! 😆 So, dhinka chika, dhinka chika...

You are right Arnav tied the thread and her sis in law Anjali replaced it with a diamond/gold ring! Thankgod, for your paagal par cute idea.

To tell you the truth I had always wished Arnav had carried some ointment with him instead of a bandage and tied a piece torn from Devi Maiyya's chunri on Khushi's ring finger!

I am sure you dint miss sending me the #11 link. i must have absent-mindedly deleted it. Yes my dad is feeling better. I will convey your regards and best wishes to him. You must meet him if you come to the land of sonar kella. He loves bongs and jana gana mana! And he wouldn't mind another daughter for sure coz he tells me that everyday! Much of Shashi Gupta in him..hmm...never thought of that.

And yes, about Barun being a bong, I have wondered too on his insistence on being called 'Barun and not the common north indian Varun. We know since the 'V' is absent tn the bengali alphabet all V' s are replaced automatically by 'B'. So I too like Durgey thought initially that he had a bong connection! In fact during my con call with him it was almost at the tip of my tongue to ask him why he was Barun and not Varun. Maybe next time . Sigh!

Achcha, dint you say I was not a non-bong? Well then, he does have a bong connection, ME!
