'Yeah Aman. I am on my way. Provide the best to our delegates. There should be no void in our presentation. It's raining too heavily. I will be there in 2-3 hours max. OK.' Arnav pulled out the Bluetooth device off his ear and threw it somewhere in the dashboard. He loosened his grip on the steering wheel and rotated the knob on the side of his door, allowing the curtain of glass to descend and letting the raindrops hit his face like they would wash away the worry lines etched on his forehead. He was tired of work. Tired of the conferences. Tired of the meetings. Tired of the deals. Arnav Singh Raizada was tired of the emptiness that had cloaked his life.
He swayed his head from side to side. He needed to relax before the actual meeting. He couldn't possibly lose out on this deal. It was very important to him and the future of his company. Relax Arnav. He breathed deeply and pressed the play button to the radio.
Arnav closed his eyes for a brief moment as he let the soft music seep into his soul. An ear splitting thunder struck and dragged him out of his peaceful reverie. His eyes shot open, just in time to see a faint figure standing in the middle of the road. 'Shit!' Arnav tried to steady the speed of his car. 'Move out of the way!' He shouted. Arnav pressed his foot on the brakes and the car screeched to a halt, barely a mere inches away from the person. Arnav could feel his heart knocking wildly against his chest, as if begging to be freed out of it's bony cage. He had nearly killed someone. He threw his head back in relief. The person on the road. Arnav unlocked his door and made his way out. The person was still standing there.
It was raining too heavily. Arnav couldn't see her face properly. He moved closer and patted her shoulder. 'Excuse me Miss! What the hell were you thinking? Who stands in the middle of the road like that? You could have hurt yourself! Thank God I was able to stop the car right before it hit you!' She didn't respond. The rain subsided as if showing some mercy. It was still difficult but he could somewhat see her now. Pretty clearly. And his breath hitched at what he saw. Never had he seen a woman so beautiful...so perfect. It was almost unbelievable. She was like a dream. A delicate dream. One touch and she would vanish.
'I need a lift.' Her voice brought him out of his trance.
'Huh?' Was all he could manage to say.
The girl looked up. 'I need a lift. Please?'
He possibly couldn't refuse. 'Sure. Please come.'
She followed him to the car, the music from her anklets tearing through the silence after the rain had ceased.
Arnav opened the door to the passenger seat and she made her way inside. He walked his way to the other side and sat on the driver's seat. 'Seat belt please.'
The girl nodded and pulled the thick string to fasten her seat belt but was unsuccessful. She kept fiddling with it when Arnav took hold of it and brought himself forward to do it for her. 'I'll do it.'
He hooked the belt in position and looked up. He could clearly see her face now. She was more beautiful than he thought. Her porcelain skin, her luscious pink lips, her eyes...they were pools of hazel with a tinge of green peeking through the center. But...they held...so much...so much pain. A burden of hurt. They were cold. Devoid of any other emotion. Any other feeling. There was just desperation. A thirst yet to quench. He realized their proximity and reluctantly withdrew.
'Where to?' He asked as he roared the engine back to life.
'Across.' She replied plainly.
'Huh? Where is it that you want to go Miss?'
'My destination.' She turned to look at him. 'My ultimate destination.' Her lips curved to a smile. It was not magical. Rather mystical. 'Just keep driving.'
Arnav nodded but his mind was a tangle of confusion.
The girl pressed her pale finger to the radio button.
The day is cold...
The day is cold and dark and dreary...
And it rains...
And the wind is never weary...
It started raining again. She opened the window and let the rain in. The water drenched her entire form. The white fabric that encompassed her now dampened, giving a clear view of her milky white skin beneath the layers. Arnav gulped the lump that formed in his throat. He clutched the steering wheel a tad bit tighter to gain some control. 'You will catch a cold. Close the window.'
She closed the window. 'I am always cold. It doesn't affect me.' She replied plainly.
Ivy still clings to the wall...
At every gust the dead leaves fall...
And the day is dark...
And the day is dark and dreary...
Silence settled between the two. 'Have you ever felt pain? The pain of being alone? The pain of never being loved?' She broke the silence.
'Every second of my life.' He replied instantly.
'What's it like to get over the pain?'
Be still sad heart...
Oh be still and cease repining...
'I...I don't know. You feel content I guess. But you do get over it one day. Life is just a journey. Your destination awaits beyond that .'
'Destination...' She whispered. There was restlessness in her voice...in her eyes. The way she twirled the ends of her dress...
Behind the clouds...
Behind the clouds is the sun still shining..
Thy fate is the fate of all...
Into life some rain must fall...
A lone tear traced it's path down her cheek. Arnav noticed it and immediately stopped the car. He rested his hand on her shoulder. He realized how cold she was. Almost lifeless. She didn't budge. He reluctantly placed her chin between his fingers and urged her to look at him. She did this time. 'Whatever it is. It will go away soon.' He wiped the teardrop.
She looked out the window. A smile crept up her face. A warm iridescent glow adorned her pale complexion. 'I see it now. I made it. I finally made it.'
'Pardon?'
She opened the door to the car. She turned to look at Arnav one last time. 'Thank you Arnav.'
'How...how do you know my name?'
She simply smiled and leaned in. Her cold lips touched his rough cheek. 'Thank you for the ride Arnav.'
He stepped out of the car. 'Wait. What's your name?'
'Khushi.' She said before shutting the door and walking away. The melody of her anklets blended with the pitter-patter of the rain.
'Wait! Stop! Stop!'
The tinkling music of her anklets faded as she walked further away...into the darkness, her light. She was content.
'Stop.' He whispered.
He closed his eyes and shook his head. He heaved a sigh and stuffed his hands in the pockets of his blazer. His fingers touched something rough. He scrunched his eyebrows and moved his fingers along the object. He clutched the object in his palms and removed his hand out of his pocket.
His heart beat erratically as he slowly uncurled his palms to reveal a silver chain with little bells attached to its sides. The anklet. Her anklet. 'Khushi.' He barely whispered as realization sunk deep into his heart and mind. She had finally made it to her destination. And he smiled. Arnav Singh Raizada smiled after years as he stood under the blanket of rain.
Some days must be dark...
Some days must be dark and dreary...
Behind the clouds...
Is the sun...

Zo posted this song on Sweetu's scrapbook so I was sorta inspired to write about souls crossing over from life to the after life. A person who has lacked love and happiness in their life usually find it difficult to cross over after they are dead. Yes, Khushi is dead. She was a restless soul because she lived an unhappy life. Her soul kept wandering to find the right person to help her cross over...who would show her some affection...something that she never had the chance to experience as a human. Arnav was the person who set her soul at peace ,hence helping her cross over.
A big thanks to Zo for inspiring me! Even though I am unsure of how my OS turned out.
And a big shout out to my gals...who inspire me and encourage me.
Belli, Sweetu and Zo. I love you guys Dammit!
