Hello People,
How is everyone today? Sunday treat is here for Rikarians.
I am brining a new story on Rikara. I haven't decided yet, how long it will be , that will depend on comments I receive and motivation thus, rendered. Updates will be short each time, but regular, I hope.
Prologue - Two Worlds - Page 1 (below)
Chapter 1 - Darkness by the day - Page 3
Chapter 2 - When the fog lifts - Page 6
Chapter 3 - When the air is toxic - Page 8
This story is set in 2175 AD, way into the future, so it will have some sci-fi elements, but minimal. There will be descriptive backdrops as is with all my writing.
But, it is essentially a Rikara love tale.
So, here it goes:
'WHEN WE MEET'
Prologue
------ON EARTH--------- Year 2175 AD
0600 Hours
Omkara was dreaming. It was more a recollection of his childhood, of a past they all forgot, or wanted to. But he held on to it, in his dreams, in his desires. That was all he had.
"Keep this my child his grandmother was telling him, whilst she dropped an amulet in his tiny hands.
"Every time you look at it, it will remind you of what we have lost. It will remind you of the beauty of how once it used to be, but we destroyed it. Mankind, we destroyed our home. And then she was gone, just like that, dissolved into ether.
Next, he heard laughter, of kids, playing, running around in the streets.
"Omkara, wait for me. She was behind him, holding out her hand, a beautiful face, her plaits lifting and swinging behind her head whilst she ran to catch up with him.
"Gauri.
Omkara woke up with a start, sweat beads formed on his forehead, his right hand outstretched, as if holding onto something. He lifted his other hand, desperately trying to feel something around his neck, the amulet. It was still there, hanging low, tied around his neck in a black thread.
He looked around at the surroundings. He was in a thatched cabin, poverty and squalor clearly evident in every corner of the small room. There was dust everywhere. Window panes were broken with more dust entering with the hot breeze. The walls had markings on it, as if the whole place had gone through nothing short of a war, bullet marks everywhere. The roof had holes in it too, with sunlight peeking in, leaving fragments of light on the floor. The room was furnished minimally, with one bed in the corner on which Omkara lay and a small kitchen-top on the other side.
Omkara tried to remember how it had come to be like this? How he had landed up here? Like this, all alone? But his current recollection was far murkier than the memory/ dream he just had.
Omkara, Omkara'
His reverie was broken by someone calling him from outside.
Omkara got up, almost stumbling first, his energy sapping, his hair disheveled, he had multiple wounds on various parts of his body.
He walked to the door, and reluctantly opened it.
What he saw, was unbelievable ...
------ ON CHIRON-------------------YEAR 100 AA
0600 Hours
Gauri woke up with the first rays of sun (or was it?) hitting the window panes. She got out of her satin white sheets and paced the huge palatial room decorated impeccably in luxurious furniture and beautiful drapery. After crossing the length of the space, she reached the huge window and opened the curtains. Light flooded in the room, yellow, incandescent light. But something was missing. There was no warmth in it, like she had once experienced, or had she? Was it just an illusion?
Everything she thought, she felt, and remembered was a question mark. She had always just felt this light, every morning, since she gained consciousness. She looked at the huge green lawn outside and a forest beyond and smiled. This was heaven. Was she in paradise? Then she heard the birdsong and she was convinced that she must have died and come to heaven. She looked up to see the sky, expecting a sky blue wash across where the tree canopies met the sky, but instead she saw purple. A sinister purple, why couldn't she get used to it? She thought, why in her memory a different colour was etched, for the sky? Had she really travelled overnight and reached a new destination? But then it dawned on her that she had been living like this every day. This was her every day! But who was she? Why was she?
Good morning m'am. Your bath is ready.' She glanced in the direction of the voice, an android, wearing a maid's uniform was standing at a short distance, his/her head bowed.
Yes, Gamma, thanks. You may leave now.' She couldn't gather how she remembered the name of the android, but important thing was, she did.
She showered and opened her wardrobe.
What was inside, really surprised her...
She was trying to think why it was so, when a noise outside distracted her.
Miss Gauri, Mrs. Kapoor is waiting for you' it sounded like another android outside her door.
Gauri opened the door, reluctantly, wanting to stay in her room (a bubble she had created for herself).
What she saw outside...astonished her no end...
