'Gauri' Her mother called out and Gauri instantly turned to look at her.
'Ji maa'
'Beta hum jante hai ki tumhari shaadi ko abhi kuch he waqt hua hai par kya tumne bache ke baare meh kuch socha hai?' Her mother asked and Gauri's forgot to breath for a moment. Kids? Omkara was not even ready to accept her as his wife yet. He doesn't even know what place she holds in his life if any and here her mother was talking about babies!
Seeing her forlorn expression her mother clarified 'beta koi dabav nahi daalre hum tumpar. Sirf aise he puch rahe the. Jaana chahte the ki tumhara rishta abhi uss padhav tak pahucha hai ki nahi'
'Maa wo humari saadi jis tarah hui uuki wajah se humne socha ki hum dono pehle ek dusre ko achi tarah samajhle tabhi apna rista aagey badhay' Gauri lied throwing her mothers way the same excuse Omkara threw at her when he wanted to stop her. Actually she doesn't know if he was lying but so far he has still not made an effort to understand her. Yes he takes care of her and yes her he treats her well but that is not all there is to the relationship of a husband and wife. Sometimes she truly feels like a charity case who has been kept in the house so that there housemates could wash their sins in the name of taking care of her!
Her mother nodded and saying something else which she did not hear left her to her own thoughts.
She knows Omkara has her best interests at heart but unfortunately for both of them half the times even Omkara doesn't know what best means. This tricky situation she has led herself into is going to come and bite her in the back someday and she knows that.
The only person who truly cares for her and loves her in the whole world is the one person she cannot live with because of the farce she has been forced to carry.
Irony it sure is that as she ran away from a marriage she was doing to protect her mother she again got stuck in a marriage she has to live with for her mother.
Don't get her wrong. Who would be happier than her if this marriage actually works. Omkara is an ideal husband. He loves his family to bits and any girl would love to be a part of the family that is cherished by Omkara but she knows this is one dream that will never come true.
That is why she wants to get out of here. As much as she knows she'll keep Omkara in her heart forever she wishes to get out of his sight as soon as possible.
Just thinking of leaving him brings insurmountable pain to her heart but living with a man who treats her as mere responsibility shatters her more.
The feel of a hand on her cheeks brought her out of her miserable thoughts and she looked up only to find the object of her musings standing there.
'Kya hua? Tum ro kyo rahi ho? Sab theek hai?' He asked worried and she felt anger rising in her at his words. Again that pity, again that guilt.
'Nahi' she said and stood up her eyes blazing with fire as water still oozed out of them 'aap chahte kya hai humse?' She asked with a finalty in her tone that scared Omkara. As if he did not give her a straight answer this time she'll do something he doesn't want her to do. Leave him!
'Matlab' He still risked it trying to delay the unavoidable confrontation.
'Matlab ki aapko kya chaheeye humse? Sadi ka rista chaheeye?' She asked straightaway.
He let out a shaky breath. The truth is he himself didn't know what he wanted from her all he knew was that could not let her go.
'Patani' He answered truthfully and something akin to disbelief flashed in Gauri's eyes.
'Patani matlab? Omkara ji aapko pata bhi hai aapne kia kya hai? Aaj aapki wajah se hum apni maa se jhooth pe jhooth bole jaare hai sirf islie taaki wo phir se beemar na pad jaaye.'
'Aapki wajah se hume apni ek laute zinda rishte se dur rehna padh raha hai. Iss anjan desh meh kuch anjan logon ke ghar meh sahara lena padh raha hain' They both knew that was not true. They were not strangers to her anymore. They were like her own family but the truth will remain unchanged they were not her real family because her relationship with Omkara remains undefined.
'Gauri tumhe yaha rehne meh problem kya hai?' Omkara asked agitated. He hated when she brought this up because every time she talked about leaving his heart became restless. He hated that he could not give her an answer that would finally stop her here for good.
'Baat muskil ki nahi baat zarurat ki hai or humare lie ye jaan na zaruri hai ki aapne hume yaha kyo roka hai?'
'Maine kaha na mujhe nahi pata' Omkara said shoving a hand through his hairs as a gesture of helplessness that was slowly gripping his insides.
'Aap..' but the she just broke down sitting on the bed with a thud her shoulders hunched in defeat as her sobs racked her body.
Omkara kneeled down in front of her clearly as tired with himself as she was with him.
'I'm sorry' He said with a sigh guilt the most prominent emotion in his eyes.
Gauri looked up quite surprised. It's not everyday that you see Omkara Singh Oberoi apologise for his mistakes.
'Mai sach meh iss shadi ko ek mauka dena chahta hu. Apne aapko ek mauka dena chahta hu. Par mera kal or tumhara kal dono mujhe rok dete hai.'
Gauri looked at him confused. What has her past to do with this?
Omkara knew what was going on in her mind. He was afraid of approaching the subject but he knew he had to do it sometime.
'Maine jo dekha ya samjha shayad wo galat tha. Shayad tum thakuraayen ki maut ki zimmedar nahi thi. Par fir tum Kaali Thakur se shadi ke liye kyo razi hui Gauri?' He asked tentatively almost afraid that she'll again get angry at him but to his belief a smile broke out of her.
'T..tum has kyo rahi ho?' He asked innocently
'Aapne pehli baar hume batane ki jagah humse puchne ki taqleef ki hai. Khusi toh hogi na' She teased bringing the guilt in his eyes back.
'Humari maa uske kabze meh thi. Hum uska kaaha nahi mante toh wo maardeta unhe. Wo kehta tha ki hasso toh hum haste the. Wo kehta tha nacho toh hum nachte the.' She said as tears dripped down her face. Something akin to horror engulfed Omkara as he realised the severity of his actions. Not just after marrying her but before also he again and again pushed her towards the man who promised her the darkest of hells.
Out of impulse or guilt he doesn't know but he instantly hugged her and she didn't protest. He buried her in his arms as she broke down.
'Pinjra chaahe sone ka he kyo na ho kaam chiriya ko baandhne ka he karta hai Omkaraji' She said between her sobs making his heart constrict in his chest. He felt something wet on his cheeks and realised it was his own pain, his own tear. Maybe Gauri realised it too since she instantly broke the hug and looking at his face surprised quickly wiped the tear. She could never see him in pain after all.
Omkara didn't know what to say. What could he give her but a petty apology. He could give her more though. He could give her whatever he had. He could give her his love.
Love not born out of guilt but out of his friendship with Chulbul. Love that he had suppressed for so long under his ignorance.
He moved forward kissing the tear on her face and then another. He knew Gauri never allowed him such liberties but he wanted to take it this one time. To be able to show her that he had accepted her. He had accepted his love for her for now he had no reason why he shouldn't.
No reason why he should let a companion like Gauri go away from him. This beautiful woman who had sacrificed so much for him deserved the world and he'll give her that world. He'll make up to her his whole life if that is required for her to forgive him but would never let her go now.
As he leaned back to look at her face for any signs of resistance he instead found acceptance in the form of her closed eyes. His heart soared at the sight. She was giving him the right. All her rights.
He leaned forward once more kissing her on her forehead right under the place where she had put vermilion of his name.
That night she didn't ask again what she meant to him. That night again he did not answer but that night for the first time they slept in each others arms willingly. A lot was there to ask and answer but that could wait. Their heart knew what they felt worldly formalities could wait.
