I don't think shivaay is confused per se. It's a battle between brain and heart. He knows his feelings for Anika clearly. There is no confusion there. But to him his feelings for Anika are impractical according to the mind. He knows what he must do to protect his family and that's what he is doing. He is not confused, he had made a choice of mind over heart.
Offence is the best form of defence. And that's what he was doing when he insulted and very cruelly insulted anika.
Anika's reaction to that could be interpreted again as her understanding of his state of mind. She understands he is In distress, she has sensed his true feelings for her, so she knows what the truth isx That's why maybe this time she didn't take it personally enough to create a fuss. And besides om said what she might have wanted to say - you have crossed all limits of rudeness. When you know someone is in distress and they say cruel things there is no use reacting to it and that's what she did.
Her dialogue with dadi that they are not the same - shows how they both think it's impractical - she says no they both are not the same - I think she meant that in terms of how their worlds can never meet, how they are not same in terms of class.
The last scene where she tells him main aisi choti si chot se Nahi darti and shivaays reaction to it was so touching. That's her way of telling him she will move on and not dwell or wallow over what could have been between them. And from his side, His heart was aching and he had tears In his eyes and he just wanted people to understand that he knows he has hurt her and he doesn't want to but he doesn't have a choice (at least in his head he doesn't have q choice). He wanted people to understand that he understands his feelings for Anika but he does not want to talk about it, think about it because it is not going to happen not because he cares about class like he keeps saying but because his family's honor depends On him marrying Tia. He can't tell them that directly because he knows if he tells them they will never let him sacrifice his happiness. And he knows, he is not at all confused about where his happiness lies.
Ironically it's Anika who understands his feelings perfectly though she is completely thrown off by the suddenness of the situation and also the suddenness of her feelings.
Maybe once the wedding with Tia is cancelled and shivaay cinfesses to Anika directly - he did confess
today - Anika will refuse him despite her feelings because of the class thing!
