Is Janhvi Kapoor going to be known as a one-hit wonder?
Omkara put down the chai he was holding and turned his head up to the night sky. The first droplets of what smelt like an impending storm stroked his cheeks.
The air had been so hot and thick for the past few days, it had felt almost suffocating. He felt grateful for the cleansing rain after which everything would inevitably feel clearer, allowing the city and its denizens to breathe once more.
The parallels to his situation were not lost on him. His cheek was, after all, still stinging from Riddhima's parting slap. He supposed he deserved it, having broken up with her the moment she tried to weave herself into his life as opposed to just hovering on the periphery.
She was a good person. Omkara wasn't stupid and nor was he naive, he knew she had her faults and knew full well what they were: she loved her kindness and good deeds to be seen and acknowledged by as many people as possible, but Omkara didn't think that negated all the good she did. And he knew that part of what she got out of their relationship had been the easy access Omkara provided to the media, but again, he didn't think wanting more people to know about the causes she championed was a bad thing. He didn't think it made their relationship any less real, either. He had felt a lot of affection towards her and she towards him, he was sure of this.
And anyway, he thought, taking another sip of the hot chai, if good deeds had to be completely selfless in order to count then he himself doubted whether he'd stacked up enough to climb an anthill, let alone to heaven.
He sighed and then turned rigid as someone sat down on the bench beside him.
"Hello, Omkara."
"You? What are you doing here?"
She shrugged one bare shoulder. "I saw you and it arrive so I was hiding. But then I heard the break up and saw the slap and thought you could use a fr- someone to talk to."
"And could you explain to me, Ishana," her real name really was beautiful. He wondered why she had picked Bella as her undercover name. His mind flashed back to Priyanka's pre-teen obsession with the Twilight novels and shuddered as he wondered if Ishana was also a fan. "In what world I might want that person to be you?"
She laughed, her ponytail swinging and brushing his shoulder. "Well, you've never really talked to me, have you? Maybe you'll enjoy it more than you think. I'm a pretty cool person, you know, when I'm not pretending to be a Star Plus Bahu."
Omkara blinked.
Shivaay, he knew, had emotions which crept slowly forward but solidified as strongly as the frigid ice of a glacier. He rolled his eyes to remember the obvious attraction and passion between his brother and soon-to-be bhabhi until that night everything had shattered in Shivaay and he'd finally admitted his emotions to Omkara.
Omkara's own emotions were as much fire as Shivaay's were ice. They blazed like an inferno when they struck, destroying everything in their vicinity. But they burned out just as quickly and all Omkara had left to do was try to salvage what he could from the devastation.
So he found that he was no longer angry at Ishana now that months had passed. Reflecting silently, he realised that he actually felt a little sorry for her, this woman who had juggled 3 identities just to try to get close to him. It was, in fact, such a stupid plan in hindsight that it was almost funny.
No. It was funny.
"Why are you laughing?"
"If I had fallen for your ridiculous plan and actually agreed to marry you, would you have told me the truth?"
Ishana folded her arms on the table and screwed up her face in thought. "Maybe. It could have been quite dramatic, you know? I might have fallen madly in love with you and felt guilty for deceiving you all that time and then, when it came time to compare our horoscopes, I would have broken down in front of the whole family and revealed my deception. Begged you for forgiveness, not received it, and then fled in disgrace."
Omkara was actually laughing, which caused a dull ache in his face and he remembered the recent slap. "You're insane."
"Maybe." She shrugged, smiling at him for a moment before grabbing his chai and taking a long sip, all but draining the cup. She put it down and peered into the cup, frowning. "Did you really only buy one cup? Your self control is outrageous."
Omkara shook his head and indicated to the chaiwala that he wanted more.
He looked at Ishana as she gave a satisfied smile and pulled a phone out from the pocket of her black jeans and quickly replied to a message. He wouldn't be surprised if she was informing the rest of her family that she had successfully initiated Phase Two of her con to seduce Omkara Singh Oberoi.
It didn't make him angry, it just amused him.
He knew who and what she was now after all, knew exactly what it was she wanted. Knew he would be able to stop her from ever actually getting it out of him... So what was the harm in letting her try?
It might even be fun to see how Ishana tried. This woman in a red swing camisole that revealed tattoos on her clavicle, on her shoulder blade... on her wrist. His eyes fell on his own wrist where the long sleeve of his t-shirt concealed a tattoo of his own.
"Are you still trying to seduce me, Ishana?" he asked her.
"Oh of course," she winked. "And this time, you're single and I'm telling the truth. You haven't got a chance."
