Seve Sairibha mardinimiha mahalakshmim Saroja sthitam.

I meditate on lotus-seated Mahalakshmi, the killer of demon Mahisasura, of the color of coral, holding in her eighteen hands rosary, axe, mace, arrow, thunderbolt, lotus, bow, pitcher, staff, Sakti, sword, shield, conch, bell, wine cup, trident, noose, and the Sudarsana discus.

The battle between the Suras and Asuras escalated into a full-blown war for a hundred years, Indra being the chief of the former and Mahisasura, the latter. The Asuras easily defeated the Suras and captured the heaven, displaced Indra and installed Mahisasura as the chief of heaven.

The defeated gods and the creator Brahma went to Siva and Vishnu and gave them a report of what happened at the battle and the coronation of Mahisasura as the Lord of heaven.

" Mahisasura made Surya, Indra, Agni, Vayu, Chandra, Yama and Varuna subordinate to him and ejected the other Devas out of heaven. Those Devas wandered on earth like mortal men. Now that you know all that happened, we seek refuge with you both. Please work out a solution to bring destruction to Mahisasura and the Asuras. "

Saranam vah Prapannah smo vadhastasya vichintyatam.

Vishnu and Siva, heard the tales of the troubles of Devas .They became angry and looked fierce.

A great Light emanated from the faces of Vishnu, Siva, and Brahma and from the bodies of Indra and other Devas. The Light from all United , appeared like a blazing mountain emitting flames in all directions,.

Yadabhut Sambhavam tejastenajayata tanmukham

Yamyenachabhavan Kesah bahavo Vishnu tejasa

That light took a female form. Siva's Tejas became the face, Yama's her hair, Vishnu's her arms, Chandra's her twin breasts, Indra's her waist, earth's her hips, Varuna's her thighs and lower legs, Brahma's her feet, Surya's her toes, Vasu's her fingers, Kubera's her nose, Prajapati's her teeth, Agni's her three eyes, the Sandhyas' her eyebrows, Vayu's her ears, and the light from other Devas her auspicious qualities.

The oppressed Devas looking at the devine Light became very emotional with delight.

Siva gave a trident emerging from His own Trident, Vishnu a discus that emerged from His Discus, Varuna a conch, Agni a spear, MAruta a bow and two quivers of arrows, Indra a thunderbolt emerging from His own Thunderbolt and a bell emerging from the bell of Airavata elephant, Yama a staff emerging from His own Staff, the Lord of water a noose, Brahma a necklace of beads and water container,

Sulam suladvinishkrishya dadau tasyai piata dhrik.

Chakram cha dattavan Krishnah samutpadyat swa chakratah

Surya his own radiant rays on all the pores of her skin, , KAla a sword and a shield, the milk ocean a necklace, a pair of earrings, bracelets, a half-moon tiara, bangles, anklets, rings for her fingers, Visvakarman a shiny axe, weapons, body armor, the oceans fade-free lotuses, Himavat a lion to ride on, Kubera a goblet always full of wine, and Sesa a serpent necklace.

Himavan vahan am sim ham Ratnani vividhani cha

Thus Devi received weapons, lustre and vehicle from gods. She then let out a loud roar and defiant peels of laughter.

Sammanita nanadochaih sattahasam muhurmuhuh

Tasya nadena ghorena kritsnamapuritam nabhah

The earth shook, the oceans agitated , the sky was cloudy the air reverberated, and the mountains trembled.

The Rishis started praising her divine excellence.

The tumult and thunderous laughter reached the enemies of the gods, whose armies came together with raised weapons. Mahisasura's ears were ringing with the thunderous laughter. He ran towards the source with lots of Asuras and saw a radiant Devi lighting up the three worlds, causing deep tremours of the earth under footsteps, and covering the sky with her crown

. Sa dadarsa tato Devim Vyapta Loka trayan tvisha

The Netherworlds trembled, as she plucked the bowstrings. She stretched her thousand arms she pervaded all ten quarters. The battle between the Suras and Asuras began .the glistening weapons lit up the sky.

Mahisasura's generals Chikshura led a fierce attack on gods with cavalry, chariots, elephants and foot-soldiers.

Asuras like Udagra, Mahahanu parivarita brought many thousands of elephants and horses and ten million chariots to the battlefield to fight the Suras.

Mahisasura looked around and saw millions of horses, elephants, and chariots. The Asuras used all kinds of weapons against Devi including axes, clubs, javelins, maces... They were no match Devi's valor.

She sent a downpour of weapons to the Asuras killing them; the celestials, gods and sages poured showers of eulogies on Her. The lion, Her mount, shook its mane terrorizing the Asuras and moved like forest fire among them. Every heave and breath of Devi became many battalions of fighting Matrikas whose every strike, stab, blow, slash, smash brought death to millions of Asuras.

Ta Eva sadyah sambhutah Ganah sata sahasrasah.

Yuyudhuste Parasurchindhi...

It was a festival of death with blowing conches, beating drums, and sounding louder. The tridents and spears crushed the asuras. The flying nooses of Devi bound and dragged the Asuras. Her merciless sword cut them into two halves and in every which way one can imagine.

The smashing mace crushed their skulls the killer hammer sprang streams of blood from wayward Asuras. The piercing arrows Struck the asuras and made them into heaps of ashes. Her trident flawlessly pierced the hearts of asuras .

Devi's weapons seemed to have a life of their own and never failed to extinguish its object. The gory of battle laid there in its stark spectacle: broken necks, rolling heads, dismembered arms and legs, limbless and headless trunks, one-eyed heads...the river of blood started drenching the battlefield

Sonitaghau mahanadyah sadyastatra prasusruvuh.

Mountains of dead elephants and horses, heaps of dead Asuras, piles of broken chariots marked the battlefield. Rivers of blood were flowing amidst this debris of war.

The Lion with its quivering mane, thundering roar, and death-defying gait went straight at extinguishing the life-breath of Asuras.

Yathaisham tutushurdevah Pushpa Vrishti mucho divi.

The gods celebrated the triumph of Devi over the army of asuras by showering flowers and singing hymns in her praise.

End of second chapter the triumph of Devi over Mahishasur's army.

General Cikhsura, seeing his army destroyed by Devi sent a downpour of arrows on Ambika just like the clouds would rain on the peak of mount Meru.

Yatha Meru gireh Sringam Toya's varshena toyadah.

Devi broke all incoming arrows, killed his horses and the chariot driver with her arrows. Devi's terrible arrows broke the bow, brought down the flag, pierced his body with numerous arrows, reduced the chariot into a heap of debris, and killed the horses.

Standing alone and facing Devi, Cikhsura rushed forward with the sword and shield, and hit the lion on the head and Devi on her left hand with his sword, which shattered into million pieces.

He launched on Devi his Sula which looked like the sun in its effulgence;

Devi countered his move with her own Sula and shattered Chikshura's Sula into many pieces. With the Sula went down Ciksura , in bits and pieces ending in his death.

Tatsulam Satadha tena nitam sa cha mahasurah.

Chamara another Senapati came rushing on an elephant towards Devi launching his spear and sula which Devi shattered instantly. The lion jumped on the elephant's head and engaged Chamara in paw-to-hand combat; both rolled off the elephant on the ground; the lion jumped off the ground and landed a paw punch on to the neck and severed the head of Chamara.

Karapraharena Siraschamarasya prithakkritam.

Udagra sustained death as Devi threw stones, trees ... Devi slapped, cuffed and bit Karala to death; pulverized Uddhata with the club; darted Baskala and shot and killed Tamara and Andhaka with arrows.

Three-eyed Devi launched trident and killed Ugrasya, Ugravirya and Mahahanu. Bidala died by her sword, Durdhara and Durmukha by her arrows.

Trinetra cha Trisulena Jaghana Parameswari.

Now enter Mahisasura in his buffalo form terrifying Devi's troops.

Mahishena swa rupena trasayamasa tan ganan

Some were whipped by his tail, some were pierced by his horns, some were pushed down by his muzzle, some were crushed by his hooves, some were blown away by his breath, and some were thrown down by his whirling movement. It was a one-bull stampede.

He shook the earth with his stomping hooves, uprooted the mountains with his horns, created tsunami waves by his whipping tail, scattered the clouds with his horns, and rolled the mountains with breath.

Svasanilastah sata so nipetu rnabhaso achalah.

Mahisasura proceeded to kill the lion of Mahadevi and Devi, who cast her noose, bound and immobilized him and yet he escaped her noose by morphing into a lion

Tatha Simho bhavatsadyo yavat tasyambika sirah...

. Ambika sliced the head of the demon-lion and he came back alive as a man with the sword and shield,

Tam Khadga charmana Sartham tatah so abhut mahagajah

Before she could kill him, he morphed into an elephant The elephant-demon pulled the lion of Devi with his trunk; promptly, she cut off the trunk with her sword.

The Asura took to the buffalo form and shook the three worlds. Devi was becoming angry with rage so much so that she drank excess of wine.

The buffalo-demon broke the mountains and tossed the crags on Chandika. Her face turned red and she pulverized the rocks with her arrows.

Tato mahasuro bhuyo mahisham vapurasthitah

Devi said to him, "Roar if you must; take a little rest while I imbibe my wine; When it is all done and over, the Devas will be roaring on the very ground you are standing; your end is near."

Maya tvayi hate traiva garjishyantyasu devatah

Having pronounced thus, Devi jumped on him, choked his neck with her foot and speared him. His human form began to emerge from the buffalo mouth but could not complete the transformation because the breath of life was cut off.

Artha nishkranta evasau yudhyamano mahasurah

And yet he would not give up; he fought with his half form. Devi's attack on the head with her sword did the last rite to him. The rest of his army died crying; the Devas were in ecstatic mood.

Praharsham cha Param Jagmuh Sakala devata Ganah

The Gandharvas sang; their wives, the Apsaras danced; the Devas and the sages showered praises on Devi.

Ya Devi Sarva Bhuteshu Kanti Rupena Sansthita

Rishi Medhas continued the story.

When that ferocious, evil army had been destroyed by the Goddess, Indra and the host of Devas bowed respectfully their bodies glowed, their hair stood erect in their excitement as they praised Her:
Tam tushtuvuh..Pranati namra sirodharamsa

"We bow to the Goddess Ambika whose body expresses the collective power of the hosts of gods, to Her who evolved the whole world by Her power,

She who is allpervading, may She bless us with auspiciousness. She is Chandika whose matchless majesty and strength cannot even be described by the adorable Lords Brahma, Shiva and Vishnu. May She protect the entire creation and turn Her mind to the destruction of grief and fear.

Yasyah prabhavamatulam bhagavanananto...

O Devi, we bow to You who abide in the houses of virtuous people in the form of Shri:
the Goddess of prosperity. Ya Sri Swayam sukritina bhavaneshu...

In the houses of the wicked you are the Goddess Alakshmi, causing destitution. You are intelligence in the hearts of the wise, faith in the hearts of the true, and modesty in noble souls. O Goddess, protect the universe!

Nata smah Paripalaya Devi Viswam.

O Devi, Your form transcends the mind. How can we describe You? How can we speak of Your great might in destroying demons? How can we tell of Your skill in the battles when You overpowered the enemies of the Gods?

Kim varnayama tava Rupam..

You are the cause of all the worlds. The three gunas have their origin in You but You have none of their defects. Even Shiva, Vishnu and others cannot comprehend You. All beings come to You for refuge. This whole world is formed from a small portion of Yourself. Verily You are the sublime Pre existing Nature, which can never change.

Hetuh samasta. jagatam

O Devi, Your complete divinity is expressed as Svaha', giving satisfaction to all the gods in the sacrificial fires. You are also the Svadha' who satisfies the ancestral beings. Therefore people chant You as Svaha and Svadha in ceremonies.

Svaha sa Vai ...Svadha cha..

You are the one who gives final liberation by performing great and inconceivable penances. You are the power which enables seers desiring moksha to restrain their senses and be cleansed of impurities.

Sa Bhagavathi Parama hi Devi.

You are the soul of sound. You are the vessel which contains the pure Rik and Yajur and Saman hymns, whose chanting is adorned by the OM. You are Bhagavati, the adorable one, embodying the Vedas.

You are the sustenance of all living things. You are the supreme destroyer of the suffering of all the worlds.
Sarva jagatam Paramarti hantri

You are wisdom by which the essence of the scriptures may be understood. You are Durga, the boat that takes mankind across the ocean of worldly illusion.
You have no desires.
You are Shri who abides in the heart of Vishnu, the enemy of the demon Kaitabha.

You are Gauri the giver of light and truth who dwells in Shiva who bears the moon on his forehead.

Gauri tvameva Sasi Mauli krita Prathishta

Your lovely face was gently smiling, pure, like the rays of the full moon, beautiful, like the splendour of finest gold.
It is utterly astonishing that, after seeing Your beauty, Mahishasura struck at Your face in anger!

Vaktram vilokya Sahasa mahishasurena

And how strange, O Devi, that when he saw Your face grow angry with terrible frowns and rosy as the rising moon, Mahishasura did not instantly drop dead. For who can survive the sight of the enraged Destroyer?

Drishtva tu Devi kupitam

O Devi! Be pleased with us! You are the supreme Mother of all life.

When angered You instantly destroy the Asura families for the welfare of the world. We saw this when the vast army of Mahishasura was brought to its end.

You always prosper those who are pleasing to You, they are honoured by others, they become prosperous and famous and their good deeds never cease, their households are ever growing contented and loving.

Yesham sadabhyudayada prasanna

By your grace, O Devi, the blessed ones daily perform righteous actions with devotion and by this they attain heaven.

O Goddess! You are definitely the only giver of the fruits of action in the three worlds.

O Durga! When You are called to mind in difficult times You remove terror from all creatures.

Durge smrita harasi bheeti masesha janto

When remembered by the self-aware You bestow deeper enlightenment.

Who beside You dares to dispel poverty, grief and fear? Who else is always kind-hearted to everyone?

You destroy the unrighteous to bring happiness to the world, O Devi. And although their wickedness could keep the Asuras in hell for ages, yet, You think of their welfare by killing them in battle that they may reach heaven.

Matveti manamahitan vinihamsi Devi

You kill the enemies of the gods with weapons rather than burning them to ashes with Your gaze. By your weapons' touch, even the wickedest may be purified and elevated. such kindness You show them.

Only by watching Your face, which resembles the cooling light of the moon, only this protected the eyes of the Asuras from the piercing flash of Your sword or Sula point.

O Goddess, Your disposition subdues the conduct of the wicked. And this beautiful nature of Yours is incomparable and beyond thought.

Your supreme power destroys those who challenged the valour of the Gods. Yet You have shown such compassion even to those enemies.

Vairishvapi Prakatita Eva Daya...

Your prowess is beyond comparison. Where else can be found such beauty which strikes terror in the enemies?

Rupam cha Satru bhaya karya Tihari kurta

In all the three worlds, only in You are found a compassionate heart and invincible battle skill, O Devi, bestower of boons.

You have saved the three worlds by destroying the enemies. Killing them in battle You have led them to heaven. You have vanquished our fear of the frenzied demons. We bow in reverence to You.

O Great Devi protect us with Your Sula.

O Ambika protect us with Your sword, by the sound of Your bell, by the twang of Your bowstring!

O Chandika guard us in all four directions with Your Sula O Ishvari!Protect us and this Earth with those kindly gentle forms as well as with those extremely terrifying forms with which You move about in the three worlds.
O Ambika! Guard us on every side with Your sword, Sula mace and whatever weapons Your tender hands hold.

Sulena pahi no Devi Khadgena chambike

The Rishi said:

This praise was offered to the supporter of the worlds as they worshipped Her with offerings of celestial flowers from Nandana van and with perfumes and precious sandal paste and all of them offered heavenly incense with deep devotion.

Smiling sweetly, the Devi spoke to the prostrate Gods:

Your hymns of praise are so beautiful.
Whatever you may ask I will be pleased to do.

Tridasah sarve yadasmatto bhavanchitam

The Gods said:

O Great Goddess! Since You have slain our enemy Mahishasura, nothing remains to be done. Yet we pray that whenever we think of You, You will remove our difficulties at that time.

O Mother of purest form , any mortal who praises You with these hymns, may You bless him with prosperity, O Ambika, as you have blessed us.

The Rishi said:

O King, after the Gods appealed to Her for the sake of the World and themselves, Bhadrakali replied:

"So be it .and vanished.

So now, O King, I have told you about the Devi who desires the prosperity of the three worlds, how She manifested from the bodies of the Gods long, long ago. Listen again. I will tell you how She came as Gauri to slay the wicked demons; Shumbha and Nishumbha, for the protection of the three worlds.

I will tell you exactly what happened.

Two demons, named Shumbha and Nishumbha, have dispossessed the gods, stripped them of their powers and appropriated their wealth and privilege. Indra's sovereignty over the three worlds and his portions of the sacrifices are taken away by the Shumbha and Nishumbha, by force of their pride and strength.

Pura Sumbha nisumbhabhyam...

The two powerful demons take over likewise, the offices of the Surya, Chandra, Kubera, Yama, and Varuna. The same happens to Vayu's and Agni's portfolios as well.

Tato deva vinirdutah bhrashta Rajyah parajitah.

Deprived of their lordships and sovereignties, expelled by the two mighty asuras, the gods thought of the invincible Devi. "She had granted us the boon: Whenever in calamities you think of me, that very moment I will put an end to all your worst calamities'.

Bhava tam nasayishyami tat kshanat paramapadah

Deciding thus the devas went to Himavat, lord of the mountains, and there praised the Devi, who is the illusive power of Vishnu.

Vishnu may am pratushtuvuh

This Stotra is known as Aparajita Stuti in this hymn there are more than twenty slokas beginning with ya devi sarva bhuteshu', indicating that the devi is present in all creatures as consciousness, as power, as intellect, as memory, as sleep, as delusion, as desire, as activity, as prosperity, as forgiveness, as faith, as loveliness, and so on.

The devas said: Salutations to the Devi, to the Mahadevi. Salutations always to her who is always auspicious .

Namo Devyai Mahadevyai Sivayai Satatam Namah.

To be continued.

While the gods were thus engaged in extolling the Unvanquished (Aparajita) Goddess, Parvati came there to bathe in the waters of the Ganga.

Parvati snatumabhyayayau...

She, the lovely-browed, enquired of the gods, "Who is she that is being extolled here?

Bhavadbhih stuyate atra kaa

An auspicious goddess, sprung forth from her body sheath (kosha) and spoke, "This hymn is addressed to me by the assembled devas defeated in battle and made homeless by the asuras Shumbha and Nishumbha.

Because that Goddess emerged from Parvati's body sheath (kosa:sheath), she is glorified as Kaushiki in all the worlds.

After she had issued forth, Parvati became dark and was called Kalika (dark) and took her abode on mount Himalaya.

Then, Chanda, and Munda, the servants of Shumbha and Nishumbha, saw Ambika (Kausiki) who had assumed a surpassingly charming form.

Tato Ambikam Param Rupam...

They both told Shumbha: 'O great king, a certain woman, extraordinarily beautiful, resides there shedding lustre on mount Himalaya. Nobody has ever seen such supreme beauty anywhere. Ascertain who that Goddess is and take possession of her, O Lord of the asuras!

Saa tuntishtati daityendra tan Bhavan drashtumarhati

You have seized every precious possession from the likes of Indra, Brahma, Kubera, Varuna, and Yama. Nishumbha has all kinds of gems born in the ocean.

On hearing the words of Chanda and Munda Sumbha called Sugriva and sent him as his messenger to Ambika. He said." Do it in such a way that she will come to me with love"

Preshayamasa Sugrivam ...

Sugriva went to the very beautiful spot on the mountain where the Devi was and spoke to her in fine and sweet words.

The messenger said, "O Devi, Shumbha, lord of asuras, is the supreme ruler of the three worlds. Sent by him as messenger, I have come here to your presence. Hear now what has been said by him, who has vanquished all the foes of the asuras and whose command has never been transgressed even by the devas.

Devi Daityeswara ssumbhah trailokye

He says All the three worlds are mine and the devas are obedient to me. We look upon you, O Devi, as the jewel of womankind in the world. You who are such, come to me, since we are the enjoyers of the best objects. Take to me or to my younger brother Nishumbha of great prowess, O lady of wavering glance, for you are in truth a jewel. Wealth, great and beyond compare, you will get by accepting me. Think over this in your mind, and become my wife'.

Durga the adorable and auspicious, by whom this universe is supported, said serenely, "You have spoken truth; nothing false has been uttered by you in this matter. Shumbha is indeed the sovereign of the three worlds and likewise is also Nishumbha. But how can that which has been promised go false?

Satyamuktam tvaya

Hear what promise I had made already in my immaturity. He who conquers me in battle, vanquishes my pride and is my match in strength in the world shall be my husband'.

Yo mam Jayati Sangame..

So let Shumbha come here or Nishumbha of great strength. Vanquishing me here let him easily win my hand in marriage. Why delay?

Tadagachatu Sumbho...

The messenger said, "O Devi, you are haughty. Talk not so before me. Which man in the three worlds dare stand before Shumbha and Nishumbha?

Trailokye kah Puman...

All the devas verily cannot stand face to face with even the other asuras in battle. Why mention you, O Devi, a single woman? When the gods headed by Indra could not stand in battle against Shumbha and other demons, how will you, a woman, face them? On my word alone, you go to Shumbha and Nishumbha. Let it not be that you go to them with your dignity lost by being dragged by your hair.

Sa Tvam gacha ...

Devi said." What you said about Subha is true. Nisumbha also is strong. What can I do if my ill conceived vow stands in my path? You go and tell Sumbha what I said carefully. Let him consider and decide what is best to him to do."

Sa cha Yuktahara kar otu tat

Hearing the words of the Devi, the indignant messenger hastened back and related them in detail to the king of the daityas.

Ityakarnya vacho devya..

Hearing the report from his messenger, the enraged asura monarch told Dhumralochana, a chieftain of the daityas, "O Dhumralochana, hasten together with your army and fetch that shrew here by force, unnerving her by dragging her by her hair. If anyone else stands up as her saviour, let him be slain, be he a god, a yaksa or a gandharva.

He Dhumra lochana...

On hearing Sumbha's words Dhumra Lochana marched with sixty thousand Asuras against Devi. Founding her on the mountain peak he shouted." If you don't come to Sumbha my lord with love,I will overpower you and drag you by the hair."

Tato balannayamyesha...

Devi replied." If you want to use force what can I do? You are accompanied by a huge army. You are sent by the King of demons and you are mighty. "

Tatah Kim Te Karomyaham.

Sa drishtva tam Tato devyam..

.On hearing her words, Dhumralochana rushed towards her. The Goddess reduced the demon to ashes by a mere heave of her breath (humkara).

Humkarenaiva tam bhasmasachakara...

Seeing Dhumralochana turned to ashes, the enraged army of demons showered on Ambika sharp arrows, lances and battle-axes. Then the lion, the mount of the Goddess, shook its mane in anger and roaring most terrifyingly, pounced on the army of asuras.

Simho devya.svavahanah.

It slaughtered some demons striking with its paw, tearing out the bellies of some with its claws, others with its mouth, and some by a stampede with its hind legs. In a moment, the entire army was destroyed by the enraged and noble lion that bore the Goddess as her vehicle...

Hearing that the demon Dhumralochana was slain by the Goddess and that the entire army was destroyed by the lion of the Goddess, Shumbha, the lord of the asuras became furious.

Chukopa daityadhipatih Sumbhah...

His lips quivering, he commanded the two mighty asuras Chanda and Munda, "O Chanda, O Munda, go there with large forces, and quickly bring her here, dragging her by her hair or binding her.

Tatra gachata gatva cha Saa...

If you are unsure of that, then let the asuras strike her in battle with all the weapons. When that lion bid stricken down, seize that Ambika, bind her and bring her quickly.
