Behind the scenes…
Ila Arun feels threatened
Ila Arun, the Queen of folk music in India, is known for her flamboyant style of singing, a skill that has remained her domain ever since she burst into the world of playback singing. After hearing Ankita's rendition of Ayee main UP Bihar lootne… Ila made a candid observation. "I don't think anybody will come to me with any more offers to sing such songs after hearing Ankita!" which prompted Annu Malek, one of the 4 judges on the show, to gallantly say that a talented singer like her need not nurse such fears. With talented singers mushrooming on every musical show it is no surprise that even leading playback singers are now feeling the heat generated by these youngsters.
Parleen: A hero's welcome
Parleen Gill does not know that a hero's welcome awaits him in Ambala, Punjab. Although deeply disappointed that he has been eliminated from Indian Idol, the local press and the people of Ambala are delighted with the performance of their own Parleen Singh Gill. All arrangements are in place to receive their hero not at Ambala but at Chandigarh itself and take him in a cavalcade to his doorstep with true Punjabi fanfare. So what if he reduced the town to tears with his exit they are leaving no stone unturned to give him a reception he will remember all his life. Balle Balle!
Indian Idol in Kargil
It pays to be a son of an Army officer. Such was the sense of pride in the Indian Army that a son of one of their officers is a contestant in Indian Idol that the soldiers in Kargil requested for a cable connection to watch the show in those difficult terrains. The request was promptly granted and the soldiers have been watching Sony Entertainment Television and Indian Idol in faraway Kargil. Says Parleen's proud father Col. G S Gill that Parleen's farewell song Laiyevi na gayi nibhayi vi na gayi … reduced the men to tears. Ironically Parleen's father belongs to the Gorkha Regiment which has every reason to continue watching the show until yet another of their own boys Prashant Tamang ,the sepoy from Kolkata holds fort on Indian Idol!
Parleen kissed in public!
The Indian Idol contestants have been subjected to a cloistered existence ever since they arrived in Mumbai. Cut off from the outside world with no access to newspapers, radio or TV, the contestants have no clue about their own popularity and fan following outside. It is only the eliminated contestants who are tasting the heady feeling of success. It was Parleen's turn the other day when he stepped out for a while. Autograph hunters mobbed him and in the melee that ensued a young girl in full public view promptly kissed him. It was enough for Parleen to take off without a second glance. "I am not that kind of a guy who will be swayed by all this," he said. His family vouches that no girl has ever gone pillion riding on his bike other than his mother. He may have a head firmly fixed on his shoulders but looks like all that is about to change!
Annu Malek-Alisha war hots up!
Annu Malek seems to derive some pleasure in putting down Alisha Chinai each time she opens her mouth on Indian Idol. Alisha has been putting up with his comments for a long while now but looks like she has made up her mind to stay quiet no longer. Now the two openly have slanging matches with a recent altercation taking a pretty ugly turn. After the raised voices, one would have imagined they wouldn't want to even look at each other but surprises never end. When Alisha walked in for the next episode dressed looking like the queen of England Annu was the first to compliment her and she even changed her seat to sit right beside him. Who knows it might be easier to box his ears the next time he riles her!
Emon sings a different tune
Emon Chaterji is touted to be the next Sonu Nigam, not just for his uncanny resemblance to the singing star but also because of his own multi-faceted personality. Like Sonu, Emon too is a great mimic and a talented musician too. When he isn't rehearsing his songs, Emon can always be found strumming his guitar. He has not just lugged his guitar from back home in Kolkata but also his synthesizer on which he demonstrates his composing skills. His passion for music is there for all to see. Few know that Emon has not only performed in hundreds of stage shows but also has an album to his credit. Who knows in the future Emon too will be strumming his guitar like a rock star ala Sonu on foreign shores!
