Most big singers keep the lyrics infront of them while singing also during recording songs, why do singers in competition has to remember the lyrics?

Amit didnt forget half of his lyrics...it was actualy just four words..and that too, he didnt forget.There was sooo much noise...the crowd was cheering so loudly that Amit couldn't hear the music...sohe was just 2 or 3 seconds late in catching up wid the music!!!
