| Unlike Hrithik Roshan who had a tough time deciding on the spellings for his newborn's name with numerologists bombarding their suggestions, Sonu Niigaam (previously Nigam) prefers figuring it out on his own.
He claims he changed his name because it felt right and it wasn't based on any expert's suggestion. The singer had his first brush with numerology during his initial years in the city.
Says Niigaam, "When I was a struggler, I would hunt for work in the mornings and in the evenings, I would fetch a book on numerology to read. Gradually, I started practising it and now I've almost mastered it."
It's Niigaam
He attributes it to the spiritual bent that has been instilled in him during his childhood days. What started off on a note of curiosity, is now serious business for him. He further reveals that he had added an extra 'i' and 'a' to his last name years back, when he was trying to get a foothold in the music industry.
"Whether it's official bank work or as simple as giving out an autograph I always stick to Niigaam. But a lot of television channels and live shows chose to overlook that and use Nigam instead. But I'm fine with it," he says.
Anu's success story
The singer further reveals that many Bollywood actors and singer colleagues frequently consult him.
Niigaam had suggested music director Anu Malik to add an extra 'n' to his first name, which he eventually did. What were the results? "Anu had benefitted a lot. He had suddenly risen to fame after that spelling change.
But then a year back, he went back to his former spelling that reads Anu. I'm sure he would have had a better time professionally, if he would have retained Annu," says Niigaam.
I believe in Almighty
Niigaam further goes to clarify that he's not rigid about his belief. "I believe that God is above karma, numerology and astrology.
So I'm not stubborn about it. If I have a meeting on a day that might not be lucky for me, I do not go out of my way to cancel it. In fact, I have not visited a numerologist ever in my life. I prefer taking a decision by myself," he says.
Ancient books fetish
Of late, he is taking interest in feng shui, astrology and palmistry. The singer informs that he has been hunting ancient books on them.
"I have taught myself a little bit of feng shui and got a few objects at home. Recently, I have acquired Bhrigusanhita, which is an ancient book on astrology. I'm also reading up books on Hindu philosophy and of course, the Vedantas." (Courtesy: mid-day) |
