The Indian 'Idol' Performs in Maldives

Rain hampered the first ever performance in Maldives of Abhijeet Sawant – the "Indian Idol" weeded out from among 15 lakh contestants in India – held in Alimas Carnival, Male', Maldives on Thursday Night last.
According to the show's presenter the show, organised by Business Image Group (BIG), Maldives and advertised for weeks, was going to be a "gaane ka mehefil" but in fact turned into a "barsaat ki ek raat" according to one attendee.
However event coordinator, Munshid Mohamed of BIG told Minivan they had no complaints from anyone because the show had to be cancelled at the climax due to rain. About 1500 tickets were sold on Thursday night alone and the organizers estimate more than 3000 people attended the show according to Munshid.
"We regard the show as a complete success" he said.
According to show-goers most of the Hindi songs sung by the 4 Indian idols Abhijeet Sawant, Prajakta Shukre, Rahul Vaidya and Ravider Ravi at the show were exceptional but a few songs did not go well with a Maldivian audience.
"They should have found out what Hindi songs were popular in Maldives. Most of the songs they sung were quite familiar but some were not" said one attendee.
The first singer Ravider Ravi was apparently a painter before he became an Indian Idol. He spoke Punjabi and Hindi only. The songs he presented gave the audience the impression that despite going from rags to riches his humble self as an ordinary guy has not forsaken him. Some may have thought him stupid trying to explain Punjabi "alfaaz" to a Maldivian audience in Hindi but from the amount of reaction coming out of the audience one would have thought all Maldivians knew all three languages.
Prajakta Shukre's songs stuck a note with Maldivians in that she chose Hindi songs popular to Maldivians. The crowd was ecstatic with her singing of "marne se pehele jeene" of Sanjay Dutt's "Munna bhai" because it was the original of a Maldivian song copied from that tune according to one woman show-goer.
Rahul Vaidya's performance was outstanding and better than the idolized Abhijeet. His way of interacting with the crowd and also his voice showed more matureness than Abhijeet's. He demonstrated quite clearly that what stimulates an audience more than anything else was the performer's confidence in what he was doing. And Rahul displayed more confidence than Abhijeet.
At length, the long-awaited Abhijeet showed up. He appeared to be a man of middle height with sticky hair wearing a shirt with overgrown collars. His first song was the all famous "muhabbatein lutaaun ga" which was beautiful and all-embracing but the next two-three songs he sang before the rain destroyed the show was ill chosen. Since most Maldivians had never heard of these songs.
Abhijeet potential did not materialise fully due to the rain and another visit is called for, in order for him to prove that he is after all the idol of all idols.
