Judges are shown to be mean and rude on reality shows denting the spirit of the participants. Metrolife explores the reasons for their behaviour

Reality shows have hit the small screen in a big way. Talent shows sure are a shortcut to fame, but like they say, success does not come easy and the participants have to brave the celebrity judges to make their presence felt. There have been instances when they have got to listen to insulting comments from these judges.

Shinjini, who allegedly lost her speech and mobility due to the shock she received after being publicly chided by a judge on a show, is a case in point. The incident also brought out the importance and responsibility of judges on reality television.

"Certain remarks are quite hurtful and embarrassing as they are made on national television," says Marella, an ardent watcher of reality shows.

It seems that most of them are playing on the weaknesses of the participants to make shows 'entertaining', enabling the TRPs to soar. For example, music director Anu Malik, as a judge was seen being rude on a musical reality show and Javed Akhtar angrily walking away. Alka Yagnik had also got into a serious verbal dual with co-judge Abhijeet on another show. Even MTV Roadies judge Raghu, is known for his 'stress interviews'. During the auditions he had made some of the participants strip in front of the cameras, apart from seeking details about their past relationships.

The behaviour and duties of most of these judges are highly influenced by the panel of the popular show American Idol.

There is a 'glamour quotient' judge, who is expected to look and act sweet. Sonali Bendre and Karishma Kapoor may be categorised as such. Then there is the informed judge. This person is an expert on the subject. Javed Akhtar and Farah Khan fall under this category. The truth telling 'mean' judge is, however, the most popular. This type of judge has streaks of Simon Cowel (of American Idol fame), whose brutal honesty and sarcastic remarks draw the audience to him. Anu Malik and Raghu fit the bill. Even Himesh Reshammiya, in one of the shows, trying a 'Simon act' had told one of the contestants singing an old Bappi Lahiri number, that he must stop singing as he has just insulted Bappi da. "The funny part is that despite rude remarks being hurled, people watch and participate in these shows. It's almost like such remarks are made to spice up the show. At times the situation goes to the extremes and this is not good," says Rishma, a student.

It's high time that the judges tone down on their criticism, and pay more attention to the way in which contestants are handled. Making them lose their confidence and driving them to tears, all for the sake of entertainment, is not good.

Simon Cowell is anyday hundred times better than Anu Malik .The man know to voice his opinion and doesnt butt into others opinion .He lets Randy and Paula do their talking and also takes so many teasers and remarks thrown at him sportingly . Infact even the contestants go ahead and tell him rude things .Do you think Anu malik will let anyone speak against him ??

yeah they have to be less harsh... i saw the auditions for roadies last season and oh my god raghu was so ruthless. I mean it is national tv. The relatives of the contestants their friends watch it. But then maybe the judges will say that if u r not ready to face it dont come on the show...But its not just them its the society today. Since media plays a very imp role today in conveying inf.... the judges try to exploit that medium. All they do is to raise the TRP's....
