Judges are shown to be mean and rude on reality shows denting the spirit of the participants. Metrolife explores the reasons for their behaviour |
Reality shows have hit the small screen in a big way. Talent shows sure are a shortcut to fame, but like they say, success does not come easy and the participants have to brave the celebrity judges to make their presence felt. There have been instances when they have got to listen to insulting comments from these judges. The behaviour and duties of most of these judges are highly influenced by the panel of the popular show American Idol. There is a 'glamour quotient' judge, who is expected to look and act sweet. Sonali Bendre and Karishma Kapoor may be categorised as such. Then there is the informed judge. This person is an expert on the subject. Javed Akhtar and Farah Khan fall under this category. The truth telling 'mean' judge is, however, the most popular. This type of judge has streaks of Simon Cowel (of American Idol fame), whose brutal honesty and sarcastic remarks draw the audience to him. Anu Malik and Raghu fit the bill. Even Himesh Reshammiya, in one of the shows, trying a 'Simon act' had told one of the contestants singing an old Bappi Lahiri number, that he must stop singing as he has just insulted Bappi da. "The funny part is that despite rude remarks being hurled, people watch and participate in these shows. It's almost like such remarks are made to spice up the show. At times the situation goes to the extremes and this is not good," says Rishma, a student. It's high time that the judges tone down on their criticism, and pay more attention to the way in which contestants are handled. Making them lose their confidence and driving them to tears, all for the sake of entertainment, is not good. |
