Actor JOAQUIN PHOENIX was involved in a serious car accident Thursday in the Hollywood Hills, Us Weekly first reported. According to police, it was around 2:50 p.m. that Phoenix was heading eastbound above the Sunset Strip when he realized his brakes were not working, resulting in his car flipping over and colliding with another vehicle heading eastbound.

The 31-year-old star's publicist said he was wearing his seatbelt and was not hospitalized. Phoenix, younger brother of the late actor RIVER PHOENIX, won a Golden Globe earlier this month for his portrayal of JOHNNY CASH in 'Walk the Line.'
