Present Day (Chicago)
Ricky stared unseeingly at the colorful soap bubbles on his laptop screen. Absent mindedly he moved the cursor & without thinking just flipped his laptop shut. After reaching home he had tried to sleep. However sleep seemed to evade him. He checked his wristwatch'it was two p.m. Feeling restless he got up & went into the kitchen where he poured himself some vodka.
Some things never changed did they? He could still feel the raw rage he had felt when she had caught the bouquet today! Catching the bridal bouquet meant that you would be the next one to be married! Not that he believed much in all that traditional nonsense! It was just that he hated the thought of her getting married'with anybody else! What was wrong with him? It had been more than a year now since they had separated. A picture of her smiling as she had entered the church with her friends entered into his thoughts. She hadn't known that he had been sitting near the aisle through which she had passed. She had still been wearing that bracelet on her left wrist. The silver thing had stars & crescent shaped moons in it. It jangled whenever she moved her hand. She always wore it no matter what the occasion. He smiled as he remembered the first time he had asked her about it. They had been seeing each other for almost 6 months then & he had been sure that she was in love with him though she had never said those words!
He had asked her to meet him at the CCD shop which near her office. He was a bit late & when he arrived he found her sitting at a table playing with her silver bracelet. He had observed that she did that often. Especially when she was alone or lost in some deep thought. He smiled & approached the table. As if sensing his presence even in her deep thoughts, she turned & awarded him with a little smile.
He sat down next to her. He ordered cold coffees & grilled sandwiches for both of them. Indira started telling him about how her day had been at the office. For the first time since meeting her he felt she was trying to fill up the silences with some meaningless talks. He listened patiently as always. She seemed almost normal except for one thing which she only did when she was very disturbed or distracted. She was playing with her silver bracelet once again. They finished their coffee & sandwiches while sharing about their respective days since their last meet with each other. And she was still playing with her bracelet. He paid the bill & as they were moving towards his car he finally asked the one thing which was topmost on his mind. He stopped walking towards the car & stood in front on Indira. She looked up at him questioningly.
R: Anything wrong Indira?
I: (hesitatingly) umm..no nothing at all. I am fine'just fine.
R: I guess I know you enough by now to understand when you are OK and when you aren't! What's wrong with you? You seem distracted.
She started to move past him in a hurry. He caught her hand but she jerked it free. Unfortunately a spiky star from her bracelet had got stuck in the steel strap of his wrist watch. The jerky movement caused the chain of the bracelet to break & all the moons & stars to scatter on the road. She gave a horrified look & knelt on the road.
I: How could you do this Ricky? (She screamed) You broke my bracelet. Do you have any idea how special it was? He had given it to me'.it was my lucky charm!
She sat on the road crying like a heart broken angel. He knelt beside her wanting to apologize. He tried to put his arm round her shoulders but she pushed him away. She was picking up all the stars & moons from her bracelet which had scattered on the ground. What was so special about that stupid thing that she was crying so much over it? It wouldn't cost more than a thousand bucks'probably then its value was more emotional. He stiffened as he remembered what she had just said... 'he' had given it to her. He felt an unreasonable surge of jealousy! Who was this 'he' who had given her that cheap trinket?
R: Stop crying! I will get it fixed for you. Don't worry! Umm'btw who gave this thing to you?
I: (looking at him tearfully she hugged him tightly) My Dad, Ricky, he gave it to me when I passed school. Since then I wear it regularly. (she was sobbing now) Ricky my dad has had a heart attack. He is very ill. The doctor has said that a bypass surgery will be needed if he is to survive. Mom has asked me to arrange 7 lakhs. And you know the most ridiculous part is, I do not even have money to buy myself a plane ticket back to Delhi. From where will I get so much of money Ricky?
From what Indira had told him about herself he knew that she belonged to a middle class family from Delhi. She was the lone earning member in a family of seven. Her father was a retired government employee. Her mother & sister ' in ' law were housewives. One of her elder brother did absolutely nothing while the other was studying in the US at present. Keeping 5000 out of her salary for her house rent she sent her remaining salary to her family in Delhi. Till date he had never questioned her how she managed without almost no money, but then till today he had never seen her worried about finances. He had always assumed she was using up her savings but either the savings had just run out or they weren't sufficient enough to cover the operation cost. She was telling him that she couldn't take a loan because there was no way she could repay it! And then again, against what would she take the loan. She didn't have any personal possession which she could mortgage.
He tried to console her as best as he could & guided her towards his car. She was silent for the whole ride back home. By the time he had returned back to his place, he had come up with a plan to help her out. He gave a satisfied smile, made the necessary phone calls, took a quick shower & went to bed. He had to start early tomorrow.
Ricky zapped back to the present with the insistent buzzing of his cell phone. It was an SMS from someone which he chose to ignore. He returned to his original chain of thoughts. What was Indira doing in the US? She had been very much attached to her family. Being in Mumbai had been difficult enough for her, financially as well as emotionally. So how did she manage being an entire continent away from her family? Could it be that she was married? Nah! She had been the bridesmaid & she had been alone after all! No sane man would ever leave such a beautiful wife alone. He knew, he wouldn't, and he never had. She had left him or rather asked him to leave her! He still remembered the two words she had said to him in her flat. 'Get Out!' They still rang with as much clarity in his ears as they had almost a year back. And the worst part was he still felt the same pain, the same sense of betrayal, of disappointment he had felt back then.
He would avenge his insults. He would make her understand how it felt to hear 'GET OUT!' Yes, he would do that, and soon!
