I have never been insecure: Manasi Parekh Gohil

Manasi Parekh Gohil
Manasi Parekh Gohil, whose Gulaal will come to an end soon, speaks to Roshni K Olivera about her show and more...

Your serial Gulaal is ending soon. You must be disappointed...
All good things must come to an end. Some sooner, some later. Point being that Gulaal is a great show and is ending with dignity. Unlike other serials that are stretched for years together without any storyline, Gulaal is ending according to its story. Yes the ratings have been modest but that is because the primetime slot has too many options for the audience. But I must stress that Gulaal has a loyal following, so I am not disappointed at all that it's ending.

What went wrong for Gulaal? It was touted as one of the biggest shows...
The channel would surely have reasons for starting a show and then ending it, so it would be beyond my realm to discuss that. However in terms of story, cinematography, direction and acting, the show has been exemplary.

What are the changes, both positive and negative, that you've witnessed in the telly industry today?
The pros...The television industry is so huge and there is so much work happening that it's almost unbelievable. Earlier there were just serials. Now there are reality shows, talent hunts and travel shows. The scope for entertainment has widened. Also now 12 hours are the mandatory work hours and shooting beyond that doesn't happen. This was essential as some technicians have died in the past owing to 36-48 hour work hours.

The cons...the excessive competition among channels to grab more advertisers on board makes the whole industry only market-centric. Shows that are pathetic in terms of content are stretched for years together only because of TRPs. When money is given more prominence than content it makes the whole balance skewed and gives rise to mediocrity. I blog about the television industry and one of the main points I mentioned recently was that writers and technicians are not given the respect they deserve. The day writers are given more prominence and faith than TRPs, will be the dawn of a new era for tv.

The telly industry is a very insecure place for actors...
The one good thing about TV is that if you are good at your job you will surely get work, period. So, I have never been insecure in that respect. But yes one insecurity I have seen in some actors is that they feel they may not get too much work in the future, so they tend to say yes to everything and anything as long as it pays. To each his own but I believe if one has faith in his or her talent then there should be no room for insecurity.

Spoken like a true artist and an able performer Mansi 👏 - kudos to you and the entire team of Gulaal! Yes, the show has executed a story as was always outlined - and is going out with more dignity and grace than shows will ever know on Indian TV!

Thank you for being such capable entertainers, we are a loyal audience, for a reason!

Thanks for posting!

I'm such a fan of the maturity and dignity with which Manasi conducts herself👏 Fab answers to all the questions...thank goodness there are SOME intelligent actresses still left on Indian TV...One can sense her disappointment in Gulaal ending and the fact that it only ever got modest ratings but just as obvious is the pride in her tone as she talks about what an exemplary show this has been that has definitely garnered quite a loyal fan following.

All said and done...even I'm glad that the show is ending with dignity unlike all the other crapfests on TV which continue to drag past their shelf-life and turn even more putrid.
