Ok. I liked your ff. Sai thought that he was married pakhi na. Hope that vl be cleared soon.
Friends,
Updating soon. This chapter paves the way for Sai and Virat coming face to face for the first time in the past five years.
She feels (sort of made her opinion) that he has married Pakhi. He feels (again, conveniently assumed) that she doesnt love him.
Do they meet? or again miss each other?
Do sparks fly at the meeting? or are they indifferent to each other? Pretend that they are strangers?
Only time will tell...
The car sped away in the night, flashing the lights and wailing like a banshee.
Sai cradled her leg in the back seat and grimaced at each and every bump on the road. Mithila, seated next to her, reassured her in turn.
“Only five kilometers away. The way the driver is going, a couple of minutes and we will be there!
Rohan, seated next to the driver, turned around as as the vehicle negotiated another turn on practically two wheels.
“looks like we are in a helicopter! Shall we tighten our seat belts?”
Shinde, the driver, grinned. “What to do Dr Saab? ACP saab said Ma’am has to be taken to the hospital as soon as possible. And when he says that, I better floor the accelerator!”
Sai grimaced at that. Just a few minutes ago, Maria had approached the ACP with a request for the car. The officer had agreed readily and instructed his driver to do all to help.
“ACP Saab, how about a cup of tea? Till these people comeback?”
“It’s awfully nice of you. Can the cook make it with ginger?”
“Sure! I will tell Sukhiram..” From the corner of her eye, Maria noted Sai being helped into the car by Rohan and Mithila, with the driver Shinde holding the door open. Good, that girl got help at the right time. It was early December and a chill was approaching. A hot steaming cup was a welcome thing anytime.
“By the way, how did this happen? I mean, the young Dr getting hurt to this extent?” The officer inaugurated his cup, breathing in its aroma. Maria had just explained the problem and the help was prompt to be offered.
“Oh don’t ask me Saab. This girl has an habit of going out on nature walks every morning and evening. Looks like she got injured somewhere outside!”
That struck a chord.
“Yes, I believe there was someone on the road whom we almost ran over. The same person!”
“Yes, She is a bit reckless in that way. We have told her many times not to do that, but she…” Maria left the rest to be understood. “She doesn’t listen..!”
“Her family? Can they tell her? She will at least…”
Maria shook her head sadly. “We don’t know anything about her. She doesn’t talk, she doesn’t mingle. The only thing Mithila, her roommate knows about her is that her father was a police officer!”
The ACP sat up at this.
“Yes, I believe I have heard about her. What’s her name?”
“Sai…Dr Sai Joshi!”
***
The moon shone brightly in the sky that day. Bathing the world in its ethereal glow, it highlighted the lone man standing in the balcony with tears in his eyes.
She was here. Right next door. When Maria had mentioned her name, his fingers had trembled as if hit by a massive electric charge. He had almost saved the cup but spilled some of the hot brew on his trousers.
“Take care Saab!” Sukhiram had run to him with a wet towel. “Lucky, the stains will go away if wiped promptly. My wife will wash the uniform spotlessly clean in no time!”
He shook his head, muttering that he would do it himself and walked away. Much to the confusion of Maria. Maybe the urgent need to wash off his uniform, she had reasoned with herself.
He never knew when he walked into his room, oblivious to the salute from the constable. He never knew how he swallowed the dinner. A few morsels to sustain himself. He never realized when Shinde, the driver came back and reported that the injection was given, a proper dressing done and Dr Ma’am was sleeping in her room.
Dr Ma’am was his Sai. His brain automatically applied the translation. She was here, she was next door and she was hurt. He sat bolt upright in the bed. He had seen her in the evening, hands thrown up and shielding the face in the glaring headlights. So close.
How was she? Did she remember him? A part of him shook him off that path. Why would she? She was much happy away from him. He had verified it for himself when he visited her college in plain clothes. She had cleared all her academic backlog and then topped the exam. His contacts had nothing significant to report after that and he had called them off. But she was still his legally wedded wife, so…maybe if she wanted to be off the deal, he would expedite the process. There was nothing left between them now.
If so, why wasn’t he in peace? Twisting and turning in the bed, her face continued to haunt him. The day they got married. Her body language was that of someone being led to the guillotine. Then her medical admission, she was a like a small child with her candy floss. Their cute banter, the bedroom fights, she had started unravelling herself. A heart of gold and a razor sharp brain. Her efforts to straighten their family equation. Somewhere amongst all this she was like a pariah. Unaffected, untouched. He walked to the balcony.
A lone light flickered in the guest house next door. Was she awake? No. Not likely, she must have had a painkiller. The ones that induced sleep. And took away the pain.
Out of sheer physical exhaustion, it was late that night that sleep consumed him.

“Hey you three, how is the fourth member of your team?” Maria asked the Drs seated at the table. Sukhiram was close behind with a tray of breakfast and tea.
“She was restless the whole night. The Dr at the district hospital have prescribed rest and painkillers. Right now she is sleeping, but for a few days, she will be confined to the room!
“And for you all, duty as usual?”
“Of course. The duty of a doctor doesn’t have weekend or even weekly off!”
“Ohh I see. No problem. Sukhiram, can you arrange a tray for Dr Sai? I will take it to her room. With the strong medicines, she shouldn’t go hungry at all!”
“Fine Ma’am. Oh, and I need to go to the town to buy groceries. Dhaniram also wanted to go so the ACP allowed us his vehicle. I will serve lunch and then leave in the same vehicle, be back by dinner time. In the meanwhile, the constable next door will make tea for you if needed!”
Maria thought for a while. It was a Sunday and the district hosted a grand bazaar as usual.
“Fine then. Go with Dhaniram. And tell him we will take care of the ACP’s lunch and tea!”
“The constable will inform the ACP accordingly!”
***
Hours flew by and it was lunch time. Maria laid the table diligently.
“Maria Ma’am…” It was Sukhiram. “Dr Ma’am has said that she is not hungry. So she will skip lunch…”
“Hey what’s this? That reckless girl. She is on such heavy medication, she must eat! Otherwise how will she heal? She didn’t have a proper dinner too…” Maria tut-tutted under her breath, making a mental note to see Sai herself. A voice behind her spoke. It was the ACP.
“She didn’t have dinner?”
“No Sir. That girl is…” Maria swore under her breath. “Impossible. No dinner yesterday, no breakfast today and now skipping lunch too! God Almighty..”
“Actually I mainly came to check on her. Does she need any medicines? Or any other help?”
“That’s too kind of you, Sir. The only thing is, she is not eating. Maybe if you have lunch with us, I can persuade her to have hers too!”
Sukhiram quipped in before he could react. “Yes, sir. She didn’t listen to any of us. At least she will listen to you. Her father was a police officer, she wouldn’t refuse another officer!”
He bounced to Sai’s room before Virat could react!
