Chapter 14: Uninvited Guests

Three days later it was Maan's and Geet's engagement. Khurana Mansion was full of guests and everyone was laughing, teasing and enjoying themselves. Rajji and Vicky had great fun together. After a long game of running around the place, trying to catch one another they settled on the balcony.

"Ok Rajji, tell me one thing. You and your parents are Punjabi, right? Then how come your name is Rajeshwari?"

"That is a cute story. When I was born I reminded my father so much of Rajeshwari from DDLJ, you know, Simran's younger sister. Both my parents decided to give me that name and over time it got shortened to Rajji."

"Cool. My mom kept my name from her favourite novel in which Vishal Sharma is a famous detective. My mom is crazy about mysteries."

They heard the announcement for the engagement and came down. Geet was wearing a sari as per Maan's request and he a sherwani specially made by Rano on her new machine. Ron was chatting with some Khurnana's which were a bit farther related to Maan. The ring ceremony took place and Maan kept pulling his hand out of Geet's to tease her.

"Mamma, mujhe sagae nahin karni, dekho na yeh kaise apna haat bar bar kheech rahe hain. (Mamma, I don't want to get engaged. See how Maan is pulling his hand away.)" Geet stomped her foot on the floor and turned to her mamma with a sad face. Archana pulled Maan's ear.

"Kyun tang karrahe ho meri beti ko? Seedhe seedhe haat do warna yeh sagae cancel. (Why are you troubeling my daughter? Give your hand or I'll cancel this engagement.)" Maan quickly gave Geet his hands and the rings were exchanged.

As per Khurana traditions, Maan had to keep a little speech in front of Geet. He had down right refused as he had no intentions of saying anything in front of all the guests, since some of them were even worst when it came to teasing than his Dadi and maa.

As he was about to start, the spotlight fell on the enterance to welcome the next guest.

There was a minute silence before Maan started:

"WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE? GET OUT" The guests were shocked as just a second ago he had been laughing along side the others. Most of the guest recognised the reason for his distress and chose this moment to leave them alone.

Shekhar, Pammi and Dev were standing there with their suitcases and in normal clothes. It came as a huge surprise to them to see Maan getting engaged. They would have thought that if no one than at least Dadi would have informed them.

Once all guests left, Maan made his way to the door. Geet was shocked to see Maan so angry and rude.

"Leave now." He held the door open.

"Beta…"

"Don't call me that. You have no right."

Again they were silent. Shekhar knew Maan well hence just went to his mother and touched her feet. She put her hand on his head but was clearly upset with his entry.

"Kaisi ho maa? (How are you mother?)"

"Bohut jaldi yaad kiya. Tumhe to laga hoga ke main ab tak marchuki hu. (You remembered me so soon. You must have thought that I have died till now.)" She said and left from there. Ron had silently indicated to Geet, Rajji and Rano to leave from there into the guest room till the situation cooled down again.

Shekhar turned and saw Archana. He made his way to her but Maan and Vicky stood protectively in front of her.

"Vishal beta."

"I AM NOT YOUR SON" Vicky spelled clearly to him. He had only seen his father in photographs and just as Maan couldn't forgive him for leaving their mother in such a way. They each grabbed one of Archana's hands and left, too.

"What a welcome." Pammi said. Dev took his bag and asked Nakul for the guest room. Nakul had seen Geet walk in there and hence told Dev to take one of the rooms upstairs. His father and mother took another spare room as Archana was in the second bedroom.

Mr Beryy and Rano went home, since they felt that the Khuranas should sort out this matter themselves. Rajji went with them but Geet stayed. She had never seen Maan this angry and it frightened her a little. But she wanted to know how he is and if he is fine, before she left.

Maan was fuming; he had never expected his father to come home like this, without at least informing them before hand. Not only had he spoiled his engagement but he had also brought back Pammi with him. He sat down on his bed and buried his face in his palm. He was most worried for his mother. Dadi had send Maan and Vicky away so that she could talk to her daughter-in-law alone.

"Kyun aae hain wo maa? Ab aake kya mile ga unhe? (Why have they come now? What will they get from us now?)" Archana was in tears as she addressed her mother-in-law. Dadi had no answer to this. Although she had wished a little for her son to be present at Maan's engagement, his entry had not been appropriate, especially because he had asked Pammi to join him.

"Shaant hojao. Mujhe nahin pata ke Shekhar kyun aaya hain. Mujhe fikar Maan ke horahi hain. Kahin wo gusse mein kuch kar na de. Upar se Pammi aur Dev bhi aae hain. Koi to wajha hogi ke itne saal baad India wapa aae hain aur wo bhi sab. (Calm down. I have no clue why Shekhar came now. I am more concered about Maan. I hope he doesn't do something stupid in his anger. On top of that Dev and Pammi have also come. There must be a reson for him to return to India after so many years.)"

"Wajha hain maa. (There is a reason, mom.)" Shekhar stood at the door.

"Dev ke shaadi hone wali hain. (Dev is going to get married.)" After a break he added:

"Maan shaadi karraha hain, apne bataya nahin. (Maan is getting married, you didn't inform me.)"

"Maan aap ka lagta kya hain, ke hum batae. Jis din aap Canada chale gae, ushi din humare saare rishte toot gae. (Who is Maan of yours that we should tell you. The day you left for Canada you broke all your relations to us.)" Archana spoke with pain clearly visible in her voice.

"Tum aae to theek, lekin tum Pammi ko kaise laae yaha, Shekhar? (You came, fine. But how could you bring Pammi with you?)" Dadi asked. Shekhar looked at Archana.

"Mujhe Dev ki shaadi mein uska poora pariwar chahiye tha. (I wanted the entire family to be present during Dev's wedding.)"

"AND YOU NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT ME? YOU NEVER ASKED YOURSELF WHAT I WILL TELL PEOPLE WHEN THEY WILL ASK ME WHO SHE IS? WHAT WILL I SAY, THAT SHE IS YOUR SECOND WIFE? Maan came running when he heard his mother shout. Shekhar wanted to help Archana, who had sunk down but Maan didn't let him.

"Go from here" he said rudely and his father left.
