Chapter 41: Water under the bridge
I wade towards you,
An ocean between us,
Yet the distance is an illusion,
My eyes can only see you
There is such throb between us,
The air thins and the sun sparkles,
Breathless with anticipation,
We swim towards each other's arms.

Geet woke up with a smile on her face. It had been years since her heart had felt this light and she clutched onto Mel to let the feeling continue and closed her eyes as she took in the warmth.
It was almost blissful to let go of the weight of grief and anger, even if it was for a moment. Geet knew that her reasons for staying away from Maan were still valid but for some reason they became so minor and unimportant.
There was only one worry in her heart; Meliara. She knew that Mel was fond of Maan but she didn't want to make any rash decisions that could harm Mel. As a child it would be a major change to have someone else permanently in her life and Geet didn't want to create havoc for Mel. Still Geet knew that she had reached a point from which there was no return.
It seemed silly to let her broken heart shatter even more when he was so close but more importantly it would be a sin to hurt him after all that he had gone through. Her pain was bearable but his was unconscionable for her.
Just as she was thinking about him, her phone rang, forcing her to open her eyes.
"Hello" Her voice was groggy.
"Hey darling" His voice on the other hand sounded fresh and alert. "I am missing you"
Speak of the devil! Geet's face broke into a smile as she listened to him. As always a sense of calm and peace spread through her at his voice. It was more so as she realised that he was within her reach. Never again would she have to face the pain of isolation and rejection. "Missing me? It's only been a few hours"
"That's too many minutes and seconds for me" Geet could actually visualise the smile on his face as he said those words. "I am not heartless, unlike certain women"
"Are you calling me heartless?" She raised an eyebrow at the comment.
"Well if you aren't then marry me" The smug retort effectively knocked out the wind from Geet.
"Are you seriously proposing to me through a phone call while I am in my PJs with morning breath?" Geet was so confused, not knowing whether to take him seriously.
"Strike three" Maan sounded gleeful.
"What? Now look-" Geet tried to protest, though she was unsure what exactly she was going to say but he cut her off anyways.
"I told you that you would get three chances and looks like you blew all three" There was a hint of mischief in his words. "I am not going to ask you again"
"Are you seriously not going to ask me again?" Geet raised an eyebrow, wondering if he was bluffing. She knew that Maan was stubborn but surely he wasn't going to stop here. It wasn't as if she actually refused him but he wasn't willing to listen.
"Yeah, I keep my word" He chuckled. "Anyways talk to you later"
And Geet was left with even more confusion. Insufferable man! She thought but even then she had a smile. But he is mine.
But the smile on her face disappeared as she thought of what she was going to do today. It would be a difficult task to have an honest conversation with her parents after holding onto such deep resentment for so long.
She sighed with weariness, thinking of the impossibility of ever cutting off all ties with parents. It didn't matter that she hadn't spoken to them for years or that she was holding a grudge, nothing could change the fact that she was their child.
Such power parents hold over us, she thought, it is inexplicable.

Virender was frustrated at the lack of progress. He had a new lawyer who was inept and inefficient but at the moment that was the best he could do.
If the matter had only been about the lawyer he would have been able to deal it but at every turn something new seemed to pop up. His case date had been postponed, delaying his stay and his bail was yet to be paid. Indeed they had put up a ridiculously exuberant amount to make sure that he wouldn't leave the country.
It is Maan and Vicky, Virender was sure of that. If I get my hands on those two I'll make sure they know not to mess with me.
But a larger part was scared that he would actually be condemned, something that he had never even considered previously. His lawyer had told him that there was already a lot of evidence against him but they couldn't put anything on him unless they had eye witnesses since the victim was already dead.
Damn woman! Virender thought with anger about Meher, even dead she creates problems. Who cares about a dead servant?
Right then one of the prison guards came to his cell and told him that it was time to meet with his lawyer, something that hardly made Virender happy.
But once he did meet the man it was a different story.
"Sir your bail has been paid anonymously" the lawyer seemed upbeat about the successful step.
"Anonymous?" Virender was surprised, after all a bail of $100,000 was not something people would give easily. But then he didn't want to question his good luck.
Now wait and see what I do, he thought with a vicious smirk, Maan your days are numbered.

She stood apprehensively at her parent's doorstep, once my own. Now that she was calmer after having been here before it was impossible not to recollect that this had once been her house, her sanctuary.
But things change. Today this place had become a stranger, just as she had tried to make her parents. However memories make the past linger leaving a mark on the present and future, so she could never cut her ties to this place.
And there stood her mother, look at Geet nervously.
"Hi" Rano said with a hesitant smile, not wanting to ruin the chance to make peace with her daughter.
Geet tried to make herself sound neutral and managed to do so with a toneless, "Morning"
Mel looked at Rano and gave a small smile. After meeting with Rano yesterday, she was a bit calmer and willing to mingle.
"Hello" Mel said in a jovial voice, causing Rano to relax and give a more open smile.
"How are you darling?" Rano asked the lovely girl, her heart clenched at seeing how much Mel resembled Geet. It was like looking back into the past. "Come inside"
Geet kept a facade of outward calm as she walked to the drawing room where her Darjii and father were sitting.
Immediately she went and gave a hug to her Darjii, while acknowledging her father with a single "Hello"
But Darjii had other plans. "I'll take care of Mel for a while and let you all talk" He got up while holding Mel's hand, leaving no other option for them.
The three of them look around nervously for a minute, unsure of what to say when Mohinder finally said "Why don't you sit in the study and we can talk there?" He wanted to speak to Rano before they had the chat.
Geet nodded readily and walked off to the study.
-----------------------
Vicky made checked his bank account, making sure that the amount had been transferred. One didn't want a $100,000 to be lost.
He didn't begrudge the money for it was nothing for him, after all he was one of the heirs to the Khurana fortune. And it was definitely a small price for role it had in their plan.
"Bro, I posted the bail" He kept his brother updated, after all this was Maan's plan. He was only carrying out the steps. Vicky had the resources as well as the ruthlessness require to bring down Virender but Maan was the one who could outwit the man.
"Do you have people after him?" Maan asked, even though he knew how thorough his younger brother was about details. This plan was too important and delicate to not micro-manage every detail.
"Of course" Maan could hear the smirk through the phone. "He won't even know what is happening"
Maan gave a humourless chuckle. "Oh he will know when he is trapped away forever. Let him enjoy the last few moments of peace"
They quickly finished the call, leaving Vicky free to talk to his devils.
"You know what to do" He said, knowing that they would handle this better than anyone else could.
"Don't worry, we will know his every step and keep you updated" Amru said lazily.
"And we won't touch him" Aashu added while looking sternly at Sanji who pouted at the comment. "No killing him...yet"
Vicky just smirked at the three, "Well get to work then!"
-------------------------
Geet walked into the study, a bit calmer with the distance and time for the dreaded conversation. She knew that her resentment was drying up but a certain part of her held on to for the fear of how she would deal with grief if her anger was taken away.
The last time she had been in the study she hadn't paid attention to the details, too preoccupied with the talk with her parents regarding Meliara. But now it had her undivided attention.
The room was still the same as from her childhood, with her father's books all lined up on the wall. The painting on the wall had been there for years as well as the photos on one of the mantles. With a reluctant smile Geet walked closer to her father's table.
There on the edge was her name scraped onto the wood. Geet remembered how livid her mother had been when she had found it because the table was an oak one. Her father had been angry but laughed it off.
She traced the letters with her fingers, recollecting the words her father had spoken, Its okay darling. It means that you'll always be on my mind even when I am working.
As Geet moved her eyes away from the mark, not wanting to get carried away with more memories, she caught sight of something that surprised her. She saw a pile of papers with her handwriting. Curious, she picked one up and gasped as she read it.
It was one of the letters she had sent her grandfather and looking at the rest of the pile she could see they were all her letters. The conditions of the paper clearly said that these were read often, as did the creases on the photos attached to them.
Geet's heart thudded painfully as she realised that her parents had read all those letters, keeping tabs on her.
It was then her parents walked in, causing Geet to turn around and face them. She saw a myriad of expressions on their faces; surprise, sadness and resigned. She was just numb, staring at them and the paper as if searching for answers.
It was Mohinder who broke the silence, "We...we didn't want to encroach on your privacy", the stifled formality surprised Geet, "But we wanted to know you were alright. Regardless of everything you are our daughter and we can never forget that."
The words struck a chord in Geet's heart, something that she had never thought possible. It brought back one of her sweetest memories.
She was lying on one of the hospital beds, scared of the needles that the doctors were holding. She closed her eyes and huddled up amongst the blanket. She had always been brave but this time the pain was taking away all her courage. She couldn't bare another prick or prod.
"Geetu" Her mother's soft and comforting voice made her open her eyes. "It will be okay"
"Mommy, they want to hurt me!" She sobbed out as she took another glance towards the needle that seemed to be even larger than the last time she had glanced. She had so many needles stab her but today she couldn't tolerate it. "Tell them to go away!"
Rano patted her, trying to sooth. "Darling these medications will help you. It will make all the pain and bruises go away"
Geet knew that her mother never lied but the needle was telling her otherwise, "No mummy it will hurt even more."
This time it was her father who reached towards her, "Geetu, Mummy and Daddy are here to make sure that you get better." Her father made sure to stare right at her eyes. "Rahul was brave to give his blood to make you better, so you have to be brave and let them give it to you. It might hurt but it will take away the sickness"
Geet's lip stuck out as she pouted but she gave a brave face. "Okay daddy but please stay with me"
"Honey, you are our darling" Rano pressed her face against Geet's hair and Geet took in her mother's lovely scent, "We will always be with you"
And Geet closed her eyes again, feeling the love and knew that everything would be alright. Nothing could happen while her parents were with her.
She had believed it throughout her life, that as long as she was with her parents she would be fine but in the end she had gone away herself.
"You can hate us, we understand that but it doesn't change the love we feel" Rano sobbed, breaking Geet's heart with her tears. "We could never remove you from our life"
All the resentment fled from Geet at the look of devastation on her parent's face as they finally let their pain shine through. Despite any anger she held she had never wanted to hurt her parents.
Without any thought she went forward and clutched on to the two people who had made her who she was. She was nothing without her parents but it had taken her four years to remember that fact.
Pain and happiness both shot through her as she held on to her parents. For that moment she was back to being a little girl who wanted to be with her parents and be reassured that everything was alright.
"We are so sorry" Mohinder said with silent tears, that made Geet clutch him tighter.
"No!" Geet wiped the tears from both their face despite the ones running down her face. "You could never be wrong. I had done something wrong and I deserved your anger"
Mohinder shook his head while Rano protested, "We told you to go away but we never could stay away from you. You were always our darling child."
Geet pressed her lips against her mother's cheek, the familiarity of her mother's face overwhelming her. "Mum I always knew that. It is why I could hold on to the anger and resentment, because I always knew that you would be waiting the day I could move forward. Subconsciously I knew that you would be there to hold me the day I broke down"
"We will always be there to hold on to you" Mohinder laid his hand on her hand and patted her, a gesture that had been a habit for many years. "But we are responsible for Rahul and Lily"
"I never truly held you accountable" Geet protested "It was my own guilt that made me blame you and that anger was the only way for me to grieve. You two were the only ones who would forgive me for my resentment, not to mention getting pregnant"
"A parent forgives a child before the child has even done the misdeed." Rano smiled through the tears. "We were frustrated and angry but it was more from worry rather than holding you accountable. The moment you walked away we regretted it but were too stubborn to call you back."
"It was your love" Geet finally could see the truth as it shone through her parent's eyes. "Everything you did was because you loved me, even the anger was an extension of that love."
After that nothing was needed to be said, just a daughter holding on to her parents.
-------------------------
Maan was nervous as he saw Geet and Mel walk towards him as he sat down on the bench in the park. He hoped that Geet was taking steps to amend the fractures in the relationship with her parents. He knew better than others the importance of having a parent to love and the pain in not having it.
He had told Geet to come here with Mel after her talk with her parents as he wanted to make sure that she was alright and dealing with the emotional upheaval.
Any doubts he had were cleared as he saw the smile on Geet's face. He had seen her light hearted and happy while with him but the look on her face at that moment was radiant. She looked so beautiful with her eyes glittering and the peace that she exuded. It told him more than anything than words that things had gone well with her parents.
And the thought that went through his mind as he saw that look was, I want her to look like that everyday. I'll make sure that she has that smile every moment.
As she sat down next to him, he turned to the two girls and smiled back at them. "How was your morning?"
"Good" Geet grinned, not wanting to say anything else in front of Mel but she knew that Maan could read her like a book. He would easily understood what had happened. "I had a lovely talk with my parents"
"I am glad of that" Maan held her hand, ignoring Geet's pointed look at Mel. This moment was too precious for him to not touch her.
"Why did you ask us to come?" Geet tried to distract him, unknowingly giving him the opening he needed.
"I had to ask Mel something" He smirked at her, while Geet raised her eyebrows.
"What do you want to say to Mel?" Geet asked suspiciously.
"That is between me and my favourite girl" Maan used a snobbish voice and winked at Mel.
"Now wait a second-" Geet started to say but was cut off and Maan sat in front of Mel.
"Mel, do you like me" He asked while reaching for her hand.
"Yes, I love knight!" Mel said in a matter of fact voice, not at all concerned.
"I love you too darling" Maan's affection for the child shone through with his words and the look on his face. "So will you let me be your dad?"
Geet gasped as she finally understood what Maan was upto. Oh Maan! Her heart started to beat faster as she waited for him to continue.
