I know a lot of my friends have had issues letting their parents know about their boyfriends or the company they keep, because their attitude has been parents will disapprove. Well this case again playing the devils advocate, parents are not quite at fault for their belief is if we talk to our kids about stuff such, the kid might feel the parents are open-minded and get too influenced and get involved. So where do you stop this circle.
As a young teenager, its difficult to grasp the realities of the world around and the meaning of everything. You look at everything with rose colored glasses. But if you do have open minded parents who can voice their opinions without making it sound like a order or dictum, then the kid will probably be more open to listening and will be able to gauge the society better. And I guess the parents have to realize that just by giving an open minded opinion about lets say something like teenage sex doesnt have to mean that the kid will indulge in it. They need to be at this level in their relationship where they dont come across as judges but as friends who will help their kids out.
And I would say by personal experience, the latter has definitely helped me.
