Part 23
As soon as Maan found out that Suhana was no where to be found, he called the police and hired a private investigator to find her. He wasn't going to let her get away with what she did. She would pay for the pain that she caused Geet. He also had the case for Dev and Naintara pushed back another week, because he knew Geet was not ready to deal with it at the moment.
A week had passed since Geet lost the baby. They brought her home from the hospital. She barely talked to anyone. She cried most of the time. Everyone tried to console her, but nothing helped. Pinky visited and attempted to cheer her up. However, Geet's state did not improve. Naina took Geet out for a day, but Geet insisted on coming home early and did not enjoy herself at all.
This was becoming unbearable for Maan. He watched her in grief and it tore him to pieces. He took a few days off from work to be with her. Every time Maan went to her, she would tell him to leave her alone. She didn't want to talk to him. Maan blamed himself for what happened. He couldn't do anything to save their baby. It was so unusual for her to be so quiet and sad. Even when she went through everything with Dev, she maintained a happy face. But after loosing the baby, her silent faade bothered Maan beyond comprehension. He felt like she was drifting away from him. He wanted his Geet back.
He talked to Dadima about his concerns, "Dadima, I'm really worried about Geet."
"I know beta, so am I. Maybe we should just give her sometime to get over this ordeal.", Dadima replied.
"But this is so odd. It's very unlike her to be this quiet."
"Maan, its only been a week since the incident. You can't expect her to be normal like before.", his grandmother explained.
"Maybe your right.", Maan frowned.
He knew no one would understand how he was feeling. He felt something different this time. Something didn't feel right. While he thought about all this he received a phone call. It was the private investigator.
"Mr. Vijay, do you have any news on Suhana?", Maan asked right away.
"Yes, I do. I found her. I already informed the police. They are on their way right now.", Mr. Vijay responded.
"Good, I'll be at the police station in a short while.", Maan informed him.
Maan went upstairs and got dressed to leave. He told Geet that they found Suhana. She merely responded with an "mmhm" Again this disturbed Maan. But he couldn't do anything, so he decided he would talk to Geet after he got back.
When Maan arrived at the police station, he saw Mr. Vijay and asked if they got anything out of Suhana. He told Maan that the police was questioning her. Maan impatiently waited. After an hour the police finally came out to tell Maan what they had discovered.
"Mr. Khurana, after questioning her relentlessly, we have discovered that Naintara Khurana had paid her to poison your wife.", the police officer notified him.
"What? But how did Naintara get to her?", Maan said fuming.
"She contacted Suhana few weeks ago and promised to pay her a large sum to poison your wife."
"So what are you waiting for? Arrest Naintara and Dev!", Maan shouted.
"Relax Mr. Khurana. I will send some officers right now.", the police officer said.
Maan waited until the police had brought Dev and Naintara. When he saw them, he went up to them.
"I will never forgive you for what you did to Geet. I'm going to make sure that you rot in prison.", Maan said dangerously.
"Bhai…please…I had nothing to do with what happened to Geet and the baby.", Dev begged, while Naintara gave him glared at him in hatred.
"I don't care.", Maan said walking away.
Finally, Maan was home to give Geet the good news that Dev and Naintara were behind bars for sure this time. He went up to his room to find her sitting on the bed. He went to her and told her everything that had happened in the police station. She frowned and didn't say anything.
He put a hand on her shoulder, "Aren't you happy Geet?"
She looked at him in revulsion and slapped his hand away from her shoulder, "Happy? What do you want me to be happy about? My baby is gone and you want me to be happy?"
"No…I didn't mean it like that."
"Then what did you mean?"
"I just thought you would be glad that Dev and Naintara were in jail for what they did.", Maan told her.
"You thought wrong. I don't care about any of that anymore. My baby is gone. I fought everyone for my baby. I left everything behind to save my baby. And now its gone. Everything that I went through was in vain!!" Geet yelled.
"Geet…I understand how you feel. I was only trying to make you feel better."
"Well stop trying, because nothing you say or do will fix this. No, you know what, there is something you can do. You can stay the hell away from me!!! You and your damn family ruined my life. I wish I never met you or your family, then none of this would have happened."
"Geet please calm down…", Maan said in trepidation.
"I wish I never married you. I should have left and gone somewhere faraway. What the hell was I thinking marrying you?!", Geet told him with tears rolling down her cheeks.
Maan stared at her in horror, "Geet you don't really mean that. Don't I mean anything to you?", he asked with sadness in his eyes.
"No! You don't mean anything to me. Just leave me alone!", Geet said looking away.
Maan stood there for too long, hurt by what Geet had told him. With all the things he had gone through in his life, nothing wounded him more than what Geet had just said. How could she say he meant nothing to her? He would give anything to wipe her tears, he would fight the whole world for her. Yet, she hated him. It became too much to bare. He began to back away. If she wanted him to stay away from her, then that's what he would do. Then, he left.
Geet turned around to see that Maan was gone. She fell to the floor and cried. She knew she had hurt him. She didn't mean what she said, but she didn't have it in her to fix it. Her pain overshadowed every other emotion.
Another week passed. Geet hardly saw Maan anymore. They lived in the same house, but Maan was never home. He came home late all the time. He slept on the sofa. When he awoke, he left the house before Geet woke up. Geet watched all this, but she did nothing about it. The loss of the baby was still fresh, and nothing else was on her mind.
Maan had never suffered this amount of loneliness before. He felt as if he had lost everything. Everywhere he looked, he saw Geet. He wanted to be with her. She was right in blaming him for everything. He promised to protect her, but failed. Her words had pierced him like a thousand knives. He felt so frozen that he could neither cry nor tell anyone how he felt. If anything, he became more bitter and aloof.
One day at the office, Pinky noticed that something was wrong with Maan. He was more angry than he was before. He was more scary too. Pinky decided to talk to Geet.
"Geet, what's wrong with jeju? His temper is worse than before.", She said sitting in the balcony with Geet.
Geet said with out looking at her, "I have no idea."
"Is it because of what happened? Maybe you should talk to him", Pinky went on.
"Don't worry, he'll be fine.", Geet attempted to brush it off.
"Well he's your husband. You know him better. But you should really find out what's wrong."
"So Pinky, how is everything in the office?", Geet said changing the subject.
"Good, I guess. I miss you at the office. When are you coming back?", Pinky asked.
"I plan on coming to the office next week. I need to get out of the house.", Geet informed her.
"That's good. Maybe jeju will feel better when your at the office with him all the time.", Pinky said with a bright smile.
Geet wasn't so sure about that. She smiled back at her weakly. She didn't know how to make up to Maan. She knew he was acting like this because of what happened between them. If only things were easy, then she could just say sorry. But things were always complicated between them. Maan was probably mad at her. One thing Geet didn't understand was, what was holding her back from apologizing to Maan?
When Maan came home that night, Geet stayed up late to talk to him. He came in looking vey tired and sullen. When he saw Geet still up, he acted as if he didn't see her and went to the armoire to get his clothes.
Geet cleared her throat, he ignored her. Then she said, "Maan, I'm going to go to work form next week."
Without looking at her, he simply replied, "Okay", and went to the bathroom.
Now Geet was sure that he was angry with her. Things were getting worse. Dadima noticed something wrong too.
"Bahu rani, why is Maan never home these days?", Savitri Devi asked.
"The company received a big project, so he's been working hard on it.", Geet lied.
"Well, he still needs to come home. Even when I call him he hangs up quickly. Are you sure everything is alright?"
"Yes, Dadima. There's nothing to worry about.", Geet answered.
The next Monday, Geet got up to go to work. She looked at the sofa, Maan wasn't there, there was a frown on her face. She got dressed and left to go to the office. When she walked in, everyone welcomed her back. She glanced towards Maan's office. He was sitting at his desk and working. She wanted to go in but didn't know how to face him. Instead, she went to her cabin.
Maan noticed Geet walk in to the office but did not react. He got up and put the blinds down on the glass wall, dividing them even further.
Next Part: It's Maan's birthday and he yells at Geet.
