I was just wondering how close to reality this show is when it comes to widows.

I'm not from India and grew up in a fairly open minded family and where we have had someone who has had their partnar die they have not had to conform to any society expections.

Are parts of India still very much against widows where they are thought of as being bad luck etc and not allowed to be part of celebrations or young women are expected to live a life of solitude - I'm guessing the same rule doesn't apply to men and they are allowed to get on with their lives

This is not to offend or start arguments but really just intreasted how modern society deals with these things

Although I'm not from India and u people might think that I'm doing argument against ...but openly speaking, I just hate these rituals...why these rules are setup only for widows and not for widower????? Don't u think...men and women should be treated equally...y widows cannot participate in any celebration?, why they cannot eat jalebi, mathri n all? Why they cannot eat anything at night except fruits??while widowers can do all these things...every one has right to live their lives by their own
Plzzz don't think I'm arguing ..and if u think sorry for that
Although I'm not Indian but I know much about Indian culture

Are there really restrictions that stop them eating certain food too??

I don't know any of these rituals or things as have never seen anyone having to follow anything like this. That's why I was Intrested if this is actually a reality or just something on TVs. I have family in Punjab India and a couple of my aunties are widows but they still wear colour, make up ( maybe not a heavy as before ) & basically live their life.

yup...there are such rituals...I'm not sure about them cz I'm watching these on TV...as far as I've seen in TV, no widow can eat jalebi and all food in which onion is put and they cannot even eat anything at night except fruits. ..but in many other serials like Saathiya , gaura is widow but she wears colourful clothes, applies makeup n all...
I thing there are different castes may be..some widows may be resisted from all these things according to their caste and some may not according to their..
And it's nice that your aunties do wear colourful clothes and do makeup cz jaane vaale to chale gaye na ab hm unki yaad me apni life to ni khtm kr skte cz is se unhi ko takleef pohonchti ha ..or if we want them to rest in peace we should avoid such things

i have been brought up in a city... though i havent seen any of the widows in my family wearing white saree and all... but i have seen some restrictions here and there esp in some functions... but nothing much really... all my aunts r widows but they live life how they like with zero restrictions ... wear what they like eat what dey want... infact in my marriage my kanyadaan was done by my aunt who is a widow ... so i havent seen in my personal life any of these things

but i know its not so everywhere.. esp benaras is called d city of widows... there are some thousands of widows who r living a miserable life there... there was a documentry also on this... also mira nair had made a film Water on the same topic which is a very hard hitting film..
guess there r places in india where such things r followed..same like there is still child marriage etc still followed in certain places..

Different religions, cultures probably do things differently. But it's good that things are changing where a woman who has lost her husband already is then made to feel even worse by society and the way they treat her.

I never knew that Benares was know as the city of widows - that's really quite sad

hey i live in benaras and born and bought up here too there was a widow culture earlier but in 2005 up govt has..restricted that...tough there are many widow ashram today itself but they are not restricted to such an extent the way they are potraying in the serial GANGA.

infact today minimum 43 percent of widows who live in ashram wears normal...light colour cloth also they can eat...whatever they want but usually avoids...Fry dishes but they eat sweets whether it is fry or not...!!!
