Her body froze. Her eyes followed his hand holding the phone while looking, he stared at it for a few seconds, then looked up to see her, her anxious eyes.
He said “I have to take this, I will be right back” and walked away to take the call. Passing her. Leaving her, just like that. With his phone.
All the thoughts that had stopped for a minute, came back running.
He was on the phone, away from everyone. Having a serious conversation. That’s when she saw Roshni walk to him, casually holding her wine glass.
He saw her walking towards him, but he gestured to her to stop, firmly. And continued his call. Then she turned around and started walking towards her. She saw that, totally displeased with that, she wondered why she was coming to her. I don’t want to talk to her, or even see her. Should I walk away? But that would be too obvious. She remained still, trying not to make it evident on her face.
Roshni got there and said “Why are you here?” She couldn’t believe her audacity to question her like that. Now she didn’t care about being rude, or being unprofessional. She replied in annoyance “our company is hosting this party. Remember?” She replied “I know but your friend K said you never attend parties, then why are you here? Is it because Arnav is here?” She interrupted “Mr. Raizada, not Arnav” while glaring at her pretentious face, her slu**y dress, her glass of wine.
She refused to validate her question with an answer. She turned her head to see her husband, who was still engrossed in rather deep conversation. She started walking when she heard her voice again “I don’t think you should go to him, he is probably on a personal call with his family. He wouldn’t like you disturbing him.”
She stopped. Not because Roshni told her to not to go. Not because he would stop her like he stopped Roshni. But to show Roshni what she can do with Mr. Raizada. She walked back to her. Stood in front of her. Making eye contact with her. Took her phone out and dialed her husband.
His phone beeped. He saw the name blinking while on his call. Khushi. And then he looked at her. She wasn’t looking at him. She was facing Roshni. Why was Roshni with Khushi? This did not look good.
“I told you not to disturb him. He will not take your call” and she laughed. Suppressing her shock to see how he did not answer her call, she was just staring at her phone when she felt his touch on the small of her back, startling her. And she turned to see.
He was there. “You called. What’s going on?” He said to her in front of Roshni, while tracing his cold finger on her bare skin, hiding it perfectly behind her Sari. She looked at Roshni, quietly, in deep satisfaction. There. That was her reply to her unnecessary statement. Before Roshni could say anything, they heard “I am so glad you are here. I am soooo happy” said K, came closer and hugged Khushi, making him retract his hand from her back. “I don’t know how you are here today, but I know I am very happy you are here.”
Khushi: It’s because Mr. Raizada is here.
He raised his eyebrows. To hear that unexpected announcement. Both the women turned to see him. One in frustration, other rather casually.
Khushi: That’s what Ms. Saxena thinks. Right Ms. Saxena?
Now the other two turned to see Roshni. One in confusion, other in anger. And that was the reply to her other question from earlier. Now she was done. That would put her in her place. Leaving her perplexed at what to say or do next. Roshni noticed his anger, she had seen that before in the office. She did not want to deal with that right now. Not in front of everyone here. He was about to say something when his wife signaled with her eyes not to say anything. He did not question her and stopped himself, though curious to know why. Karan arrived there right before things got more awkward and said “what are you guys talking about?”
Now everyone looked at Karan when K leaned on Khushi’s shoulder and said “I really don’t know…I think Khushi is here because ASR is here. But I think that’s not true. And maybe Roshni thinks that it is. I really don’t know...”
All eyes were on K now. “Are you drunk?” asked Karan. “No, I don’t think so. I only had a few drinks. I am just happy Khushi is here.” Replied Karan “of course, that will save her a trip to solve your so-called relationship problems.” And they all laughed. Well, three of them. One smile. And one resentful individual.
