"Oh...' Anu simply hums. It is silence for the next few minutes. Just then, Viren notices the amber light from the headlight of some vehicle and quickly stands up. Anu too looks at him hopefully as they spot a car at a distance. Viren quickly stands up and steps in to the road a little waving his hand as a signal. Anu too stands behind him, hoping that they'd get a lift. .
"Please stop!' Viren toots as the car draws close to them. Unfortunately, the car just drives past them and leaves in to the darkness leaving them in disappointment.
"Shitt...' Viren mutters under his breath and looks at Anu who is also bearing an upset face.
"Can we get out of this place anytime soon?' Anu questions in a sad tone while Viren shrugs his shoulders.
"Don't know. let's see.' he says in the same tone as hers and looks at the road again, having no clue of what will happen.
Two hours later. Viren's and Anu's patience have literally worn out of waiting. In the past two hours couple of other vehicles has passed by, but none minded to give them a helping hand.
"I think we'll have to see morning here!' Viren mumbles in annoyance while Anu just looks at him with an upset face.
"I'm sorry. Knowingly or unknowingly I've become the reason for entrapping you here.' Anu says guilty, feeling sad. Ultimately she knows that her fantasies were the root case of all these misshapenness. But what can she do, it just happened, but she never felt it would trouble someone else too.
"It's okay. What happened is happened. Let's not ponder more on it. Sure, we'll find some way out.' Viren consoles her, making her smile.
At the same instant, Viren hears the sound of some vehicle and quickly rushes to the road. He finds a truck approaching them and sighs in anticipation.
"Please god, please help us.' he mumbles as he signals the truck to stop. Anu also reaches him stuck between expectation and awareness that it can be turned down. Viren signals vigorously while the truck reaches real close to them. Anu prays silently, wishing that the truck would stop. Much to their relief, the truck halts as it reaches them. Anus' face brightens up with a smile while Viren sighs in relief and kisses his fist looking upward, thanking the lord. He quickly runs to the truck and looks in to see the driver.
"What?' asks the driver, a middle aged fellow with a knit brow.
"Woh bhaisaab, we lost the bus we were travelling . It's so long since we're staying here on the roads. Can you please give us a lift? We need to reach Veerpur. If you're not to there, just leave us in the next junction where we can catch a bus to the place.' Viren requests while the driver looks at him and Anu alternatively.
"Please bhaisaab, we'll sit in the back. Girl is also there. Please!' Viren requests taking a look of Anu.
"haan Bhaiyya, please.' Anu too pleads.
The driver thinks for a moment and then rubs his brow.
"Okay. Get in. we're going to Veerpur only.' he says while both their faces lit up.
"thank you bhaisaab!' they say in unison with wide smiles.
"Okay, okay, make it fast.' the driver orders while Viren gestures Anu to follow him. He reaches the back of the truck and gets in quickly while Anu stays on the ground, not knowing how to get in. It's at a good height and so it's quite difficult for her. Viren settles himself in the hay in the truck and looks at Anu who is in dilemma. He understands her concern and slowly extends his right hand to her. Anu looks at his hand first and then at his face. Why do I feel so strange, thinks her as she slowly extends her hand to him. However, she shoves off those thoughts and grabs his hand as a support. Viren holds her hand tightly and pulls her up, landing her in to the truck, though unsteadily.
"Thank you! 'she says as she sighs in relief while Viren smiles warmly. It's then when they notice that their hands are still joined. Viren flashes an awkward smile as they pull off their hands from each other's slowly and settle down comfortably.
"Shall we go?' they hear the driver asking them.
"haan bhaisaab!' Viren says loud enough while the driver starts the truck. Viren and Anu sigh in extreme relief as they are taken far away from the shed where they've been sitting for while two hours.
"thank god!' Viren says to Anu while she nods positively.
"Seriously thank god. Or else I don't know what we would have done.' she says while Viren gives her a relieved smile.
Much later. Viren and Anu are still seated in the back of the truck as it travels with full speed. The extremely cool breeze is hitting both of them and poor Anu is literally shivering in the extreme chillness, all thanks to her light cotton clothes. Viren finds her trying to keep herself warm by wrapping her hands around her frame. Her nose is watery and teeth are rattling.
"you alright?' he questions her in concern while she gives him a positive nod though she didn't mean it at all. Viren too understands that she isn't fine and thinks for a moment. An idea strikes his mind but he initially feels odd of it. Yet, seeing her condition he removes his jacket and extends it to her while Anu looks at him confused,
"Here, Wear this. You'll feel better.' he says while Anu nods a quick no.
"It's okay. Wear it. No problem.' he says.
"No. it's okay. I can adjust. It's so cold, so you may need it too.' Anu says, not ready to disturb him.
"No problem. My tee is already woolen and otherwise too I'm pretty immune to all this. So take it.' he says while Anu looks at him hesitantly. Still with the look he gives her and due to the extreme coldness, she couldn't stop herself from taking it. She slowly gets it from him and wears it. It instantly shields her from the extreme cold, making a deep sense of gratitude brew for him in her heart.
"Wear the hoodie too. you'll feel even better.' Viren says pointing at the hoodie while Anu slowly pulls it over her head.
"Very good. I'm sure, you'd have no problem now.' says Viren with a smile.
"thank you!' Anu says with a wide smile while Viren grins, running fingers through his hairs that are blowing in the wind..
"It's okay...then...let me sleep. I'm kinda tired. Good night.' he says while Anu nods warmly.
"Good night!' she wishes him back while he smiles, keeps his bag away and lays down on the hay, looking at the night sky. he's anxious about the next day but just closes his eyes to sleep. Anu too leans on the railings of the truck and closes her eyes, musing on various things. Unknown to them, their paths have converged, not for a day but for a lifetime.
