OS: X-Mas Greetings
"This one seems nice, in fact, I am already in love with it," Kumud squealed. She was relieved, after all, she had been wandering around in this greeting card shop. The shop looked like a shoe box, it was so stuffy inside and all the cards were messed up. She was hunting for a nice card to send to her dear ones for Christmas and each one which she had a look at seemed to have problems of its own.
The first one was a bit too childish as it had big cartoon polar bears on it and the second one looked too formal. She had tossed all the cards that were not of any use to her in random shelves and she could sense that the shop owner was shooting daggers at her. She sighed and continued her search. She would need at least a dozen of cards of the same design...that would be enough to send to everyone. She lived alone and she did not have many contacts.
She then saw a card towards which she instantly developed a liking. The front cover of the card was a mixture of silvery grey and light blue, and there was a big white snow flake in the middle with Santa's cap on top of it and it was surrounded by many other tinier snowflakes and it had silver glitter spread over the graphics. That seemed to be perfect. She did not bother to continue searching as she was exhausted.
The shop owner raised his brows and looked at her as she brought the card to the counter. Kumud chuckled and asked him," I want a dozen of these cards please," The shop owner took the card and looked closely at it before saying," I'm sorry, there are no more of these, they have already been reserved by someone else,"
Kumud nearly choked, she just spent an hour to settle for this card and now, the man told her that this greeting card was out of stock. She did not lose her cool however and asked as kindly as she could," I just need a dozen of these..."
The shop owner sighed," Well, I can't help you more than that, either you choose another card or..."
Kumud interrupted him and her tone was slightly menacing," Or what?"
"Or..uhh...well..y..you could try and request the person who reserved it to let you have some of these cards," the shop owner uneasily said.
"And how do I possibly contact the 'person'?" Kumud stressed on her last word. The shop owner gestured her to wait for a minute as he thought of something. Kumud impatiently tapped her right foot while crossing her hands over her chest.
"The person who has bought the cards is coming to collect it in 20 minutes, you could wait,"
Kumud gritted her teeth and decided to wait.
--------------------------------
-Some hours after-
Kumud slumped onto her couch. She removed her winter boots and shoved them away. She was really really tired. She had to wait for an hour before the person who had bought all the cards arrive. But...she was not angry, initially she admitted that she was ready to choke that person to death but after she saw who it was, it seemed like all her anger melted like ice candy under the hot summer sun. Kumud blushed on remembering the past few hours spent with Saras Vyas, her high school crush.
He looked more handsome now and on hearing his husky voice, she just got drowned in the depth of his melodious voice and she did not even bother to request him for the greeting cards she loved. She ended up choosing another design. She was disappointed but she would treasure those minutes she spent with him. She clearly remembered how he looked at her face and then exclaimed,"Kumud," Her name never sounded so heavenly. Saras had asked her if she really needed those cards, instead of saying that she urgently needed those, she just told him that it was not that important. Saras thanked her and she smiled at him like an idiot...well, that was her mental imagination of herself at that time.
Saras affected her badly, even though, she met him after a year. Kumud poured down some water into a glass and gulped it down.
Kumud looked at the clock on the wall, it was 9:00 p.m. She had already had her dinner at a restaurant before returning home. It was the eve of Christmas and she was already sleepy, after all, she had been out the whole day. All she needed at the moment was a nice warm bath and a good sleep. She was relieved that she had posted the cards on her way back home. Despite, there are e-cards and other forms of wishing relatives nowadays, Kumud preferred the hard copy greeting cards.
--------------------------------
Beep. Beep. Beep.
Kumud hit the snooze button as soon as her alarm went off. She opened her right eye and peeped at the time, it was 7:00 a.m. She buried her head in her fluffy pillow but the alarm started ringing again and she got up this time.
After freshening up and changing into a clean pair of clothes, Kumud dipped a tea bag into a mug which was filled with hot water and got out of her house to go and check her letter box. Apart from the daily newspapers, there were a few envelopes. She ripped the envelopes apart and all of them were for Christmas. Only her parents and a couple of her friends were the senders, the rest of the people she knew wished her through social medias.
Wait a second.
There was a card that immediately grabbed all her attention, it was the same greeting card on which she had her eye on the previous day, the snowflake design one. Kumud anxiously opened the card and she was pleasantly shocked when she saw that it was Saras who sent it to her. He had written:
Dear Kumud,
Wish you a Merry Christmas. May your Christmas be blessed with peace and joy.
P.s: I am sorry for raiding the whole stock of this card, I know that you really wanted it but thanks for letting me have it, I owe you one.
Extra P.s: It was great seeing you after all these years, we could catch up some day.
Extra Extra P.s: I actually have nothing to do today, so if you are free, I'll come and pick you up. Just give me a call on this number- ********
Extra Extra Extra P.s: You might be wondering how I got your address, I have contacts *wink*
Don't worry, there will be no more P.s's.
Take care
Yours faithfully,
Saras
Kumud felt her heart pounding, how can somebody be so perfect. She hid her face in her palms as she blushed and she sent a quick message to him.
--------------------------------
Kumud ran her thumb on a small crease which was on her top. She looked at herself in the mirror for the last time and she heard a honk. Kumud bit her lips and blushed, finally she was going to meet him again. She locked her front door and noticed him waving at her. Kumud controlled her sudden outburst of emotions and got in the car. He flashed a smile at her and he asked her,"Shall we go?"
Kumud simply nodded.
Saras and Kumud were at Starbucks later on. Saras had not really made plans for Christmas and he would be watching a movie marathon at home, if he had not come out with Kumud and the same case was applicable to her as well. Kumud was soon comfortable with him and she asked him,"What did you do with all those greeting cards?"
Saras smiled," Well, I was waiting for you to ask this...every year, I give greeting cards to children in orphanages and I had really liked that card," he chuckled at the end.
Kumud was in awe, he was clearly perfect.
--------------------------------
-Five years later-
"Mom, where is my hot chocwit?" a three year old asked.
Kumud popped her head out of the kitchen," I'm making it,"
After some minutes, Kumud had a mug of hot chocolate in her hands and she forwarded it to her son. Yes, she was married now, to the man of her dreams, Saras. She positioned herself next to her baby on the sofa who was busy watching the holiday specials on TV.
Kumud felt a hand around her waist and she looked up to find Saras. He sat next to her on the sofa and kissed her on the forehead,"Do you remember how we got back in touch with each other and then we realised that we were made for each other?"
Kumud smiled," Yes, all thanks to the X-Mas Greetings."
