Part 14

Khushi was taken aback by the force of Arnav's hug and was wondering what to do next as her arms lied by her sides like sticks. The void in her own life caused by the lack of parents presented itself in her mind as she thought about Arnav's situation.

Empathy had found its way into the unwilling heart of Khushi. She could forgive Arnav but the distressed part of her did not want to feel empathy for him but she had surrender in front of the powerful empathy she held in her heart for him. She put her arms around his neck and pulled him closer as she whispered into his ear,

"Calm down, Arnavji!" She was not able to find any other words of consolation to offer to the man seeking solace in her arms and that managed to induce guilt into her system.

Her expression of commiseration towards him had struck the lightning of realization on him. Realizing that he had engulfed Khushi in a hug, probably forcibly, Arnav immediately withdrew from the hug with apology floating in his pooled orbs.

" I am sorry that.." He was cut in between before he could complete his statement,

" It is perfectly fine. I had lost my parents too, and less tragically than yours so I can partially understand you if not completely. You don't have to apologize," she said warmly, winning his heart all over again.

Khushi had proven again that her persona was splitting image of Arnav's mother and it only made his heart twitch in guilt and in agony to have hurt such an innocent and selfless soul, who cared about the man who destroyed her. That minute he knew that if he was losing her, it would be after a fight and he would properly court her before marrying her, no matter what, as she deserved everything good.

Arnav got down on his one knee much to Khushi's surprise and confusion. She knew what the gesture meant but she didn't want to face that question, realizing that her heart was conspiring against the logical part of her.

" Khushi, I know that I have no right to ask you this after what I made undergo but believe me when I say that I truly loved you. Will you honor me by staying beside forever as my wife, Ms.Khushi Gupta?" proposed Arnav Singh Raizada, as he looked straight into the Khushi's eyes and making her extremely conscious of herself.

To see one's mother in your love is sign of immense respect and that gesture had overwhelmed Khushi. No matter how much she would try, Khushi knew that it would be impossible for her to hate him after knowing it. He had been deprived of his mother's love and he had aged before he should have, but still he knew how to love, not like his father but truly and passionately.

" I will marry you. But-" Khushi hesitated to complete the statement.

Arnav's face which lit up with hope and instantaneously he was ready to give anything to ensure that she marries him. " But?"

Khushi looked into his eyes, searching for anger arising from her hesitance, but she found none, much to her surprise. " I need some time. I understand you will not be able to call off the marriage but-"

" I am ready to give you as much time as you want," promised Arnav, while Khushi looked up at him in surprise.

"Really?" she asked hesitantly.

Arnav smiled at her more warmly than she could expect him to. " Yes, darling. I will blame it on something or the other and give us a proper courting period. Anything for your happiness," he said while Khushi stared at him incredulously but realizing the way her facial expressions were being disrespectful of his intentions, she immediately smiled feebly at him.

" Thank you," she mouthed while turning around to leave from there, unable to bear the presence of ammunition and the thickened atmosphere anymore.

" One second Khushi," Arnav stopped her in mid-way as her heart raced wondering if he had changed his decision of giving her time and was going to do something she didn't want to think about.

He gently held her by her shoulder and turned her around so that she looks at him straight in the eye. His deep chocolate orbs engulfed her eyes in a passionate caress, counting the streaks of deep brown which adorned her hazel eyes.

His hand rose northwards, just as Khushi's breaths hitched. His warm breaths fanned her flushed face as his hand traveled towards her warm face as Khushi shut her eyes, thinking about the various scenarios this physical proximity would lead to and for which she was not ready.

Arnav's long fingers, rough from the work he does, brushed along her sharp jawline and moved towards the apple of her cheeks. Khushi gasped at the burning touch of him and scrunched her eyes further. Khushi felt something greasy in between Arnav's finger and her cheek and opened her eyes wide open to see Arnav cleaning her henna smeared cheek.

Mentally scolding herself for misunderstanding Arnav's actions which had noble intentions behind them, Khushi smiled at him guiltily. Arnav's hand crawled towards her nape as Khushi drew in another sharp breath and his head descended towards her, causing her to shut her eyes in the anticipation of a kiss, going by her gut instincts.

Instead of what she had expected, a chaste kiss was placed in the partition of her hair, exactly at the place where he had smeared his blood not quite long back. Resting his forehead upon hers, he said,

" I said I would wait for you and I meant it, Khushi. I am sorry if my actions made you feel otherwise. I heard that kiss on the forehead is a sign of assurance and my assurance to you is that I will never let you down and will try my best to make you smile always. I truly love you, Khushi. Please don't let anything make you think otherwise."

Khushi felt her heart brimming with multitude of emotions and her mind working in a dazed state, thinking about how different the real Arnav Singh Raizada was from what he showed to others. Arnav pulled himself away from her and smiled at her warmly, allowing her to leave. That one smile from him erupted a storm in her heart, concealed by a perfectly calm demeanor.

Feigning a smile to reciprocate his sweet gesture, Khushi turned around to leave and almost ran to the more bright area of the palace. Stopping near a pillar, she leaned against wall, panting and thinking about the man who caused myriads of thoughts in her mind and alien feelings in the pit of her stomach with his words.
