Chapter - 1
Ananya
"Burr..."
I opened my eyes, slowly. Damn Charu! I told her not to set an alarm. What was the hurry? Can't her best friend wait?
Huh!
As always, I shut the alarm clock down and dozed off to sleep again. "Her bestie can wait," I thought and smiled.
"Dhruv, get the hell up," my to-be-sister-in-law shouted at me. She always behaves like she's my mom. I mean I'm 20, she's 19. Do you talk to your elders like this?
Charu is marrying my elder bro, Deep Kapoor (who is 22) 6 months from today. Yeah, they both are young and still going to college and all, but they had took this decision long ago, to spend lives together, and were eager to move in.
"Yeah, yeah, getting up," I replied but didn't force myself to get up.
"Argh! Darn you," I shouted. Charu had punched me in the gut. I know, we don't have a mom but that doesn't mean she'll act like one.
"You deserve it! We decided to go to Ananya's . What the hell is wrong with you?"
"What the hell is wrong with me?! What the hell is wrong with you? And, what the hell is wrong with your friend? Can't she wait?!"
" She can, but I can't," she shouted back at me. She's always pain but she gets too reactive for that Ananya, don't know why. I mean, after all, she's just a friend, I'm her fianc's brother .
I showed no sign of getting up. I can be stubborn too!
"Bhai, you know na, Ananya has always kept herself away from Kullu after 12th. Now she's finally back for a year and today is her birthday. I wanted to be the first one to wish her." Her tone was sad now. She always called me Bhai', brother, as she was like a sister to me.
I hated EMOTIONAL ATTYACHAR like this!
"All right, all right. You go downstairs, I'll be ready in 10 minutes."
"Thank you, Bhai!" She hugged me and ran downstairs, happily.
I got ready and within thirty minutes we were in the car, on our way to Ananya's. After seeing Charu's affection towards this girl, I was actually curious to meet her.
I never knew much about Charu's friends, for obvious reasons. All I knew was that Charu had three best friends: Ananya, Disha and Nisha. Disha and Nisha were twins, not identical though. They had moved to Chandigarh, now. And Ananya was a tomboy. She had moved to Delhi as soon as their 12th was over but now was back for a few months.
I stopped in front of Ananya's apartment. Charu hopped out of the car. I got outside, too, and locked the car.
"I don't think you will be the first person to wish her. Her boyfriend must have wished her at exact 12 a.m.," I teased Charu as we walked towards the one room set apartment.
"No, I will be the first one," she said blankly.
"No? Your bestie got no bf?"
"No," she said, again blankly, and ringed the doorbell.
"Why? Is she that ugly that no boy pro..." I couldn't complete my sentence as the door opened and I finally saw Ananya.
She was beautiful.
She had long brownish-black hair with red highlights at the end, which she had left open. Her skin was fair. She had dark brown eyes and an angular face with high cheeks. She wasn't really tall but was taller than Charu. She was wearing jeans with a grey tee on her dancer's body.
I was too shocked to utter a word. How can someone like her be single?
"Happy birthday!" Charu shouted and hugged her.
"Aw, you remember?"
"Of course, I do, you idiot."
Ananya smiled. I wished her, too and she invited us in.
The house, rather room, had a bed and a small sofa set at side. Beside the bed was a table that held some dance trophies. There were some pictures of the four friends together on the west wall.
Ananya in those pictures and Ananya now were entirely different. She had long hair like now but they weren't dyed. Her dressing sense then was more like Capri or lowers or stuff like that. No one can, now, say that she was a tomboy.
Ananya went to the kitchen and came out with glasses of water for us to drink. We exchanged a few comments on the weather.
"So how are your dance classes going?" I asked. Charu had told me that Ananya taught dance for living.
"Great," she said and smiled.
"Yeah, I can see that." I pointed my head towards the trophies and laughed. Both of them laughed, too.
"You should come and see the kids, they love it when someone visits," she offered.
"Oh sure, if I got time." I smiled.
We had a little chit chat and then I dropped Charu and went home.
That night, I thought of Ananya. I wanted to meet her again, that's for sure. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
