Chapter -10

It had been almost two weeks since Puneet had joined Sanyukta and Randhir"s team. Sanyukta was having the best time of her life working with people she was really fond of. These were those few people, who had complete faith in her capabilities and respected her achievements.

They were working with a perfect work life balance. Becoz, their work had become their life! Sanyukta was only bothered about one thing. Since the very first day, Puneet had been flirting with Sanyukta, which was not the cause of her worry. She was worried because of Randhir"s restrained behaviour whenever he saw Puneet trying to get pally with her. It would take him a couple of minutes before he would get back to normal and the air in their work room would ease out. She suspected if Puneet even noticed it. But for her, nothing that Randhir did, escaped her eyes. She did not discourage Puneet for fear of being rude and spoiling the work atmosphere, but kept a straight face to make it clear to Randhir that she wasn"t encouraging him either. If at all Randhir noticed...

"But why am I bothered about what Randhir thinks. Am I thinking that he might be having feelings for me even today. Haah! That's a ridiculous thought Sanyukta. After all that happened in college, you think he would still have any special feelings for you? It is his good heart that he still offered his friendship to you. You should expect no more." she thought to herself almost everyday.

But everyday she went back to ogling at Randhir at some point of time or the other. She just couldn't take her eyes off him, whenever he was busy working on his own. It was becoming difficult to handle her fluttering heart with every passing day, but she could not afford to remain distracted for long as there were stringent deadlines to be met.

It was news years' eve and the mood at the SAL office was that of celebrations. Puneet walked up to busy Sandhir and exclaimed, "Hey guys did you check your mails?"

Sandhir shrugged, "Yes! Why? what happened?", both spoke at the same time.

"Didn't you read the mail from the events organizing team?"

"Yes! But didn't read it in detail. It's about some new year's bash." again both of them spoke in unison.

"Arre guys! It's going to be a first of its kind party in our organization at the Mallard beach resort." Puneet couldn't hide his excitement.

Sandhir wooed in excitement. "We have really burnt ourselves out during last couple of weeks. We really needed this break. We will definitely rock this party." Sanyukta jumped up her chair.

"And that's not enough guys! The best part is that... we have to go there in couples. Only couple entry allowed." Puneet declared pompously.

As soon as Puneet made the declaration, Randhir"s excitement died out. His face turned straight and he turned to look at Sanyukta, who was already glaring him in his eyes.

Randhir was first to break eye-contact and looked up at Puneet, "That's great! So you and Sanyukta should go as a couple." as Randhir said this, he realised that he did not sound very convincing. "I mean both of you will make a nice couple." He stammered and looked at Sanyukta from the corner of his eyes towards the left. He realised that Sanyukta was looking at him with repugnance.

Puneet took a moment extra to gauge the suddenly tensed atmosphere and then added in jest, "Hey Sanyukta! Don't even think about me. I havn't told you guys but I happened to stumble upon Mita from the IT team last week in the canteen. And we clicked right away, so I think I am going to take this opportunity to ask her out. Sanyukta, I hope its ok with you?" Puneet was blushing and his cheek were flushed crimson red.

Sanyukta and Randhir both were half shocked and half relieved at this revelation. "Wow! That's great! Go ahead man. And all the best!" Sanyukta tried to bring in as much enthusiasm in her voice as she could, even though her insides were feeling extremely heavy and burdened with Randhir's words.

Puneet stood up and excused himself out of the work room, to make a call. As soon as he left the room, Randhir turned towards Sanyukta to find her already walking away from him towards her desk. Sanyukta stopped at her desk and rested both her hands on the table. She took a deep breath making up her mind, "I think I'll skip the party." she said warily.

Randhir bit his tongue realising that he in his own insecurity and angst had hurt her. He stood up and walked upto Sanyukta. He held out his hand and turned Sanyukta to face him. Sanyukta held her head low and made all efforts to not look at Randhir. But Randhir adamantly placed his index finger on her chin and pulled it upwards to make her face him.

"I"m sorry." he whispered close to her.

She yanked his wrist away and looked away from him. The sole tear that trickled down her eye did not go un-noticed from Randhir.

"Who gave you the rights to decided on my behalf as to with whom I should go out or not?" Sanyukta barked at him.

"I said I'm sorry. It was just a friendly suggestion." Randhir tried to mend his words.

"Thanks and no thanks for our suggestion." Sanyukta snapped back, her eyes filled with tears now.

Randhir couldn't hold himself back any more. He couldn't bear tears in her eyes; not then, not now. He held her by both her arms and restricted her movement against her will.

"Sanyukta! Can I have the pleasure of having you as my partner for the new year's bash tonite?" Randhir's voice was full of passion and hope.

Sanyukta looked up at Randhir for the first time since Puneet had left the room and let out a tiny sigh. A faint smile was visible on her lips as she said, "Yes".

Randhir closed his eyes in relief and then opened them back to see her still looking at him. "I'll pick you up at nine." and turned around to leave the room.

Sanyukta chose to dress up in a Royal Blue knee length noodle strap dress with a loosely wrapped an inch thick black belt across the waist. She dried up her hair with a blow-dryer as Randhir was already on his way.

Once ready Sanyukta stood infront of the mirror to take a full view of herself. She took a minute longer to make sure nothing was missing. Eye-Kohl - check; Lip Gloss - check; Blush - check; Silver white Danglers - check; Watch & Bracelet - check; High heels - check.

Everything was ok and in place, but Sanyukta was still very conscious of how she looked today. "Why? Sanyukta you've never taken so long to get ready, then why are you still fidgeting with your appearance." she scolded herself for having spent way too much time on getting ready. As she checked the time on her wrist watch a thought gripped her mind that made her freeze on the spot.

"Is it because of Randhir?" she shuddered at the thought, just when her phone rang.

"Am waiting for you in the compound. Come down, don't feel like parking, so just waiting for you in the car." Randhir said and disconnected the call.

Sanyukta checked herself out for one last time, took a deep breath and moved out of her flat to take the lift downstairs. As she moved out of her building she saw Randhir leaning on to the bonnet of his car. As soon as he saw her, he straightened himself up and his eyes went wide open and his jaw dropped.

"What happened? Am I not looking good? I knew I would make a joker out of myself in this dress. I don't know why I chose to wear it today." Sanyukta was suddenly panic struck and continued to rant until Randhir raised his palm to shut her mouth.

"No! you are not looking stupid." Randhir said still recuperating from the beautiful sight that she was at that moment.

"Then why were you staring at me like that." Sanyukta asked as if her life rested on his reply.

"That's because you are looking so se**" Randhir restrained, "I mean you are looking beautiful." Randhir gave her a warm smile which eased out Sanyukta's stiffened body.

They both sat in the car and Randhir began to drive, stealing glances at Sanyukta at regular intervals. Sanyukta who noticed this from the corner of her eyes, finally looked up at him and said, "Randhir! Do you mind focusing on driving?"

Randhir let out an animated cough and replied, "Sorry! It's just that I've never seen you like this before." He stole a quick glance at her long slender neck line followed by the very prominent shoulder blades that were accentuating her sensuous appearance. Randhir could hardly bear the fluttering of his stomach at the sight.

They reached the party venue within next 20 minutes. All the while Sanyukta and Randhir had maintained an awkward silence. As Sanyukta got down the car and started to descend toward the entrance, Randhir caught up with her and slipped his hand into Sanyukta's, entwining his fingers into hers. Sanyukta turned around in bewilderment and raised her eyebrows to look at a smiling Randhir.

"It's couple entry, remember?" Randhir pulled her along with him.

"And so you will take advantage of this? Hmm ?" Sanyukta chirped back. She was not angry or anything like that. Instead she was savouring his touch on her hands and slowed down the pace to elongate the moment.

"They call it making the best out of the opportunity. Now can we not delay further and get inside... Lady?" Randhir was at his chivalrous best. Sanyukta and Randhir entered the party hall together hand-in-hand. To an onlooker it presented the picture of a perfect and extremely graceful couple.

During the next three hours upto the new year countdown, Sandhir were seen talking and enjoying the party with members from other teams whom they were interacting with during the course of their project. Puneet was very happily and evidently drooling over that damsel from the IT department. Even a casual spectator could guess how Puneet and the IT girl were head over heels into each other. Sandhir who were standing at a distance looked at Puneet and then shared a glance amongst themselves. Randhir shook his head and Sanyukta chuckled and looked around. Randhir got stuck again at the sight of an extremely beautiful Sanyukta.
