Vaisyanatha, the Merchant Lord Shiva...
A human birth is rare even for the devas & asuras. If one does not strive for moksha after being born a human being, one regrets it for ages when one is dead.
Once, in Nandigram, there lived a courtesan called Mahananda. She was a great beauty & a Shivbhakta. She was an extremely talented & charming woman, adept at singing and dancing & even more at voluptuous love. With devotion & joy, she worshipped Lord Shiva. She wore ashes and rudraksha & chanted the Lord's thousand names. She danced & sang like a dream for Him only & none else, though the people thronged to watch her.
Her loving too, at which she was so uninhibited & generous, was for Him, in devotion; to please His creatures, men, to give them as much delight as she could. She would do anything a man wanted and so willingly & exquisitely that love with Mahananda for those men was a precious experience. Everywhere, even into the realms of gods, spread the fame of Mahananda, the devout harlot.
One day, a stranger made his appearance in Nandigram: a merchant & a devotee.. The tripunda marked his brow, rudraksha was round his neck, his body was ash-smeared, his hair matted in jata & around his wrist was a priceless, gemset bracelet. Mahananda welcomed the traveler as if they were blood relatives by their common bhakti. She brought him to her home, & fed him like a king, though he was a stranger.
She had a weakness for jewellery so unable to resist her temptation, shyly, she admired the beauty of his bracelet. The merchant said charmingly, "It can be yours, gentle lady. But what price will you pay for it?" Mahananda laughed gaily & replied, "Sir, we are not chaste women in our family, but wh**es. If I take the bracelet from you, I will be your wife for three days and nights!"
The merchant agreed..he asked her to touch his heart with her hand & be his wife in body and soul for three days and nights. The merchant tied the bracelet round her slender hand. Thus, he married her and kissed her passionately. Then he gave her a brilliant, jewel-studded linga & said, "This is the dearest possession I own. Keep it carefully for me until I leave."
Reverently, as any wife would, she took the linga and locked it away in a niche in the dance hall in her courtyard. She went back to him & they spent a torrid night of love. Never before had Mahananda known a man of such tenderness and virility as this rough & elegant merchant. No one had ever made love to her as this vaishya did! At midnight, they fell asleep in each other's arms & she dreamt of being his wife forever..
In the small hours, a fire broke out in the courtyard. Mahananda smelt smoke and shook the merchant awake! They ran out together and saw that the fire had destroyed the holy linga & extinguished its jewels!
The merchant cried, "There lies my soul, dead. I can't live anymore. Get a pyre made for me, I must burn myself tonight!" After his lovemaking, she knew the determination of his spirit: he surely meant to kill himself.
A pyre was made, the grim merchant, chanting Lord Shiva's name, calmly walked into the flames... Quickly, he was ash. Mahananda miserably said, "He died because of me & I was his wife at that time. Though all too briefly, I loved him. Now I am his widow & I will follow him into death! My truth lies there & there is liberation only in truth!" She willed all her immense wealth to her family & to charity. She too calling fervently to Lord Shiva, walked into the flames!
Lord Shiva stepped out of that fire before it could touch her! The crescent moon sparkling on His head; the Lord was bright as a hundred suns and He took her hand in His... She was stunned!!! He had the merchant's face!
Lord Shiva said tenderly, "I came to test you, lovely woman. I was the merchant, I burned the dance hall & the crystal linga; I walked into the fire. Mahananda, your virtue is pure, your faith perfect. I will give you whatever you want..."
When she found her voice, overwhelmed by her Lord's love, she said, "My Lord, all I want is to touch your Lotus Feet...My family here & my servants are all your devotees. Please do take us to your world, free us forever of the terror of rebirth."
For love of His devout wh**e, Lord Shiva took them all to moksha in Shivaloka...
