APPARITION'S PROTOCOL

Chapter One: Naina

Furious was an understatement. For Arnav Singh Raizada had never experienced an anger so potent in his entire life. Her words rang in his head over and over again, growing louder as he stepped harder on the accelerator.

"You're nothing. Just a man who has nothing to his name but his money and his ego"

The same image kept flashing in his brain. Naina, naked in bed with his roommate, the man he had once thought to be his well wisher, his best friend.

Arnav had returned to his room early; today was no ordinary night. He had booked the hotel, bought the ring, ordered the roses and he was on his way to pick out the perfect suit and tie when his entire world came crashing down in an instant. Naina, his Naina, turned out to be nothing he imagined. Her promises of love and inseparability dissolved in an instant, as he walked in to witness her moaning a name that did not belong to him. The ring in his pocket, that he hoped would change his life lost all its meaning, and like an anchor, it brought his knees crashing to the ground.

It did change his life. But not for the better. It completely demolished him.

"Stop it Arnav. Naina is over." He tried to stop the images of her from retreating back into his thoughts, yet his attempts only suffered in vain. Her black, curly tresses and the chime of her angelic laugh seemed perfectly engraved in his memory. He could smell the spearmint on her breath and the fragrance of sandalwood of her skin. The glint of her deep black eyes and the flush of her cheeks were mocking him, tempting him to go back to his room and take her in his arms once more.

"Maybe it was Dev. He could have messed with her emotions. Instigated her"

No. He knew Dev all too well. Dev could never be serious enough about a girl to make an effort to claim her. If he found Dev and Naina in that position, Naina had to have been willing to compromise with their relatioship. He tried to deny the circumstances, yet the sharpness of her words kept stabbing him, "You're nothing. Just a man who has nothing to his name but his money and his ego."

"DAMN IT ARNAV".

He hit the brakes and began hammering the steering wheel, bellowing at the top of his lungs, until he lost all control and collapsed against his dashboard, crying at his fate, crying at his circumstances.

"Don't let her get to you like this. If she can sleep with Dev, don't hold back. Show her that you're nothing less."

With that, Arnav quickly turned the key in the ignition and drove a few more blocks until he found exactly what he was looking for.

APPARITION'S PROTOCOL

Chapter Two: Seeing Emerald

He rolled down the window and asked bitterly

"What's your charge?"

The voice that responded took him by surprise. The voice was nothing like his Naina's. Naina's voice was beautiful, melodic, like chimes playing in the wind. "I don't take less than 4000 an hour sir". She muttered it throatily, with no emotion, no sensation, and Arnav looked up to stare into her eyes.

She was the absolute opposite of Naina, yet she had her own beauty, her own exclusivity. The hair that he had spent his years tightening his fingers around had been short and curly, jet black. The skin that he had caressed every morning was dark and rich, like chocolate, complementing the gorgeous black eyes he loved staring into, loved losing awareness of his surroundings in.

The girl who stood in front of him was the epitome of fraud and deception. Her hair was hidden in a cheap brown wig and her pale cheeks were painted with blush she must have bought in a dingy convenient store. The only thing that stuck him as genuine were...

her eyes.

They weren't like Naina's pools of midnight, but they held their own magnificence, their own enchantment. They were emeralds, with hints of brown and hues of grey, eyes that he could not shift his gaze from. He was glued. Transfixed.

"Sir. If you're interested speak up now or keep moving"

Her hoarse voice broke his trance, and he angrily growled

"Sit"

Any other girl would have moved away hearing such aggression in a voice, but this girl had seen the worst of any lifetime. This man was nothing.

She sat in the passenger seat inaudibly and stared out of the window as Arnav drove the car away from her regular street corner.

After several moments of complete silence, Arnav suddenly began to feel awkward and attempted to engage in casual conversation.

"What's your name?" he murmured, glancing in her direction, hoping to get another glance of brilliant emerald. But to his disappointment, she didn't waste a single glance towards him and continued to gaze unintelligibly outside her window.

"You're paying for me sir. Tonight, it's whatever you want it to be."

APPARITION'S PROTOCOL

Chapter Three: Revenge

"You are paying for me sir. Tonight, it's whatever you want it to be."

Arnav looked at her incredulously. How could she be real? A girl selling her body was no new concept, but selling your identity? Selling your individuality? He began to pity her condition, and his mind wandered to deliberating the state of her deteriorating circumstances rather than his own.

"She must be poor. Perhaps an orphan? Maybe she was left by her husband."

Arnav tried to stop stealing glances of her, but he found it impossible. The emerald had taken over his mind; it was enchanting in every sense. He was suddenly feeling a strong urge to look back into those eyes, not just to admire their beauty, but also to decipher the reason of the pain that was hidden deep within them.

"The Ritz Pavilion? Are you serious?" Her hoarse voice broke his train of thoughts. He looked out and noticed that he had already parked into the hotel he had set out for. His guest was staring at the beautifully lit building outside her window.

"What?" he asked, trying to make sense of his surroundings.

She repeated herself. "The Ritz Pavilion? Is this where we're staying?" There were hints of surprise and confusion in her voice. It was still fairly monotone, but suddenly Arnav was hearing more sensation in the words that left her mouth.

He was taken slightly aback. "Why? Is there a problem with this place?"

"No... it just that... it's just that... usually they take me to some junkyard where they can use me like trash and dump me where I belong. I... I've never actually... well... I've never... been treated like this. I'm not some princess that gets whisked away to some dream palace. The Ritz... The Ritz is my...'"

No. She couldn't do this. She refused to let any man use her emotionally. Her body was already established for vending, but her feelings were off limits. She closed her eyes, recollected herself and turned to face Arnav in the eye.

"Anyways, that's none of your concern. Shall we?"

She turned again to open her door.

"No. Wait!" Arnav attempted to grab her wrist so he could hear what she had to say, but she had already slammed the door behind her.

Arnav was confused. Her words kept circling his head.

I'm not some princess.

They can use me like trash and dump me where I belong.

I've never... been treated like this.

The ache in her voice began to stab his heart, and he realized that there was plenty more agony in the world than he had experienced. His heart had been broken once. This girl had been smashed and shattered by every man that touched her. Every man that came to her used her, dumped her and erased her from his memory. With every man that came and left, she became a hollower shell of what she probably once was'another young girl with dreams of a prince charming.

Arnav followed her out of his car and walked to where she was standing, offering her his elbow. She looked at it questioningly, and began to walk ahead of him. He awkwardly brought his elbow back down to his side and followed her. When they approached the entrance, they were saluted and greeted by the doormen. "Good evening, Mr. Raizada. Good evening, miss." Arnav nodded and ushered her to follow him towards the front desk.

"Aah, we weren't expecting you here tonight Mr. Raziada." The clerk greeted Arnav without taking his eyes off his paperwork. When he heard the clinking of heels following Arnav, he added "Good evening Ms. Nain---'" He dropped his filing when he laid his eyes on the evident prostitute with Arnav. His hands began to tremble.

"Ooh... Pp... please foor... forgive me Sir. I did... I didn't realize. I... I'm sorry."

Arnav began to feel his vexation rise. Naina. The filthy images began to obstruct his brain once more, and he suddenly remembered why he was here. Revenge. Payback.

"Shethi. I need the key. Now." His hiss was dangerously quiet and Shethi knew better than to try to reengage in conversation. He quickly scrambled to find the key for Arnav's personal room.

"He... Here you g...go sir."

Arnav snatched the key from his hand and pulled her inside the elevator. When she saw him guiding her to the top floor, which she was well aware led to the presidential suite, she became more and more skeptical. " What are you? Some kind of forgotten Indian prince?"

Arnav didn't hear her voice. All he could hear was Naina. Her accusations.

"You're nothing. Just a man who has nothing to his name but his money and his ego." His fury rose as her allegations amplified in his head. When the elevator dinged to indicate the 23rd floor, he hauled her inside his suite and pulled down the sleeve of her shirt to begin his assault.

To initiate his revenge.

APPARITION'S PROTOCOL

Chapter Four: Companion

Naina. You're going to pay.

"You're nothing. Just a man who has nothing to his name but his money and his ego."

Revenge began to stir his body and envy began to cloud his mind as Arnav began to pull the sleeve of his hooker down and assault her skin: kissing, biting and tracing the crooks of her neck and shoulders without asking her permission.

Naina.

The image of her body trembling underneath his asshole friend's was permanently etched into his memory. Her ringlets sprawled across Dev shoulders, just as they would cling to his own during their intimate moments.

And finally, her beautiful voice screaming "Arnav?!", not in pleasure, not even in surprise, but in obvious infuriation at the inconvenient interruption, began to repeat itself over and over in his disconnected thoughts.

He would reciprocate. He would fight back. He would give her the taste of her own medicine.

His hands wound under the dress of the woman he was affronting, and he began to wrap his urgent hands tighter and tighter around her body, looming over her small frame, clawing her skin to mark her as his. He kissed her body urgently, leaving no revealed skin untouched, no skin undamaged.

It was only when he took her lips in his own did he realize that the girl who stood in front of him was not reciprocating. He was kissing her fervently, but the lips within his own did not counter his actions. She was not responding in any way, positively or even negatively, to his storming.

That was when he turned to look up at her once more, and the ice within his hardened body began to thaw with her warmth.

Her eyes. The shine of her emerald.

They had changed his entire perspective. When he peered into them, he lost sense of everything: his emotions, his feelings, and his surroundings. All he could think of was her and her pain, trying to remove the suffering that was imprinted so deeply within them. He felt roots stemming from his body and grounding him to where he stood--- he could not move, this woman had him totally disarmed.

All plights of finding revenge melted away in the warmth of her mystic green brilliance, and his hands slowly slipped out from underneath her clothing.

"I'm sorry." He gasped, out of air. "I'm really sorry. I shouldn't have---"

She cut him off, suddenly perplexed. "What the hell. Why are you apologizing? You're paying me for this, aren't you? Please, by all means, continue. Whatever I have is yours to use."

Arnav shook his head, beaten. He couldn't do this with her dignity just for vengeance against Naina. He couldn't think of contributing more ache to the eyes whose aggravation was already piercing his soul.

"No. Listen, I'm sorry for dragging you out here, but I can't---"

"THEN WHY DID YOU WASTE MY TIME? I COULD HAVE MADE MONEY WHILE YOU WERE PLAYING AROUND HERE." She was bellowing at the top of her lungs, her eyes shining with anger. Apparently, time was one of her most precious recourses, one she was not free to waste, especially during the night when her clients were in abundance.

She was spitting fire as she turned for the door, but was bewildered when she found a tight grasp around her wrist, holding her back in the room.

No. He could not let this girl leave. He was too captivated by the spell of her pain stricken eyes to let her exit so easily. He didn't know how to name or describe the strange power that was holding him back from letting her proceed for the door. To his astonishment, a voice that was not controlled by any reasonable train of thought left his mouth:

"I don't want you to sleep with me. I'll pay you just for your company tonight."

APPARITION'S PROTOCOL

Chapter Five: Woman

"I don't want you to sleep with me. I'll pay you just for your company tonight."

She couldn't help but widen her eyes in shock. He's going to pay me? For just sitting around with him for the night? She turned around, shock written on every line of her makeup-ridden face.

"Excuse me?" I have better things to do than just sit around with you.

Arnav sighed. "You did not hear me properly. I am willing to pay you the same exact charge. Please, just spend the night here. You're not losing anything"

She contemplated this. A man had never showed any interest in her for anything but selfishly using and discarding her body. The man standing in front of her was offering to pay a hefty price just for her companionship? She could not come to believe it. She took a second to carefully observe the bizarre man for the first time that night.

He was tall, fair skinned and sporting some designer suit that would be in display at stores she could only dream of visiting. He had stubble that she could tell he maintained very stalwartly--- not overgrown, yet offering a visible and inviting roughness to his attractive face. He was a handsome man; there was not doubt, but she could trace creases of anguish and pain written deeply in his forehead and in his every expression and grimace. She was going to deny his peculiar offer, but then something struck her right through the heart.

His eyes.

She forgot everything: her name, her past, her future, her present, and she began drowning indefinitely into his pools of searing honey. They were the most erotic hue of brown, radiating the warmth and security that had always been absent in her frenzied life. Her knees suddenly began to feel the pressure of her body weight and started to tremble as the beating of her heart became more erratic. She felt

Happiness

Serenity

Purity

penetrate her callous body. Yet somewhere in the emotions that were flooding her, she felt a sharp pain puncture her.

Those superlative honey brown eyes had traces of anguish, the traces of betrayal and treachery that she was too familiar with. For the first time in years, she felt her blood boil of the sight of hurt in another person's eyes. She felt a resolve to rid him of that torment, of that permanently etched affliction, when suddenly--

"Is it a deal then? I promise, I'll pay you."

Without giving a second thought, her heart answered for her and a faint "yes" was whispered into the air.

Arnav felt his blood rushing through his veins at the sound of her consent. Naina became a memory of the past, and he felt a smile creep onto his face for the first time that evening.

"Why don't you make yourself comfortable? Please, go ahead and watch anything you'd like on the television. I'll freshen up and join you."

With that the hooker moved towards the lounger and the gentleman went to his washroom, both with unaccustomed smiles on their faces and new sparks in their eyes. Yet the both of them were totally unaware of what had happened between them, and what was yet to come.

When Arnav rejoined his guest in the living room, he saw that she was sprawled across his lounger, focusing intently on whatever was flashing on the television screen. He took the sofa next to her and tried to catch up with what she was watching, and to his dismay he saw that she had chosen the one movie that never failed to make him roll his eyes to the ceiling.

There were Rahul and Anjali, perfectly ethereal despite being drenched in fresh rainwater, dancing to nonexistent music in a completely arbitrary gazebo.

"Are you serious? You chose th--'"

His words were caught in his throat as he turned to see a picturesque vision beaming the most radiant smile towards the television. Her eyes were glistening with some hidden dreams and he noticed her smilingly mouthing the lyrics of the music.

Arnav felt an understanding hit him as he watched her intently appreciate the romance on his television. She was a hooker. But before a hooker, she was a girl. Her body had been abused and trashed by countless men, but even she dreamed of some prince charming that would whisk her away into the sunset. She had the same right as every other young woman to idolize Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and to believe that a real life Rahul will enter her world.

But as the dance ended and Anjali ran away from the Gazebo, Arnav noticed a single tear slide down her face.

Because in her life, no Rahul ever returned to love her

APPARITION'S PROTOCOL

Chapter Six: Khushi

Silent tears continued to uncontrollably stream down her face and she felt her body shudder with spasms. Arnav sat looking at her, completely dumbfounded. He had never seen such a reaction to just a scene in some movie. And out of nowhere, Arnav felt himself moving closer to her, wiping the fresh tears that rolled from her eyes, and cajoling her with soft reassurances whispered into their privacy.

She looked up at him, taken aback. How did she allow herself to react like this in front of him? And why was he being so kind to her? She was nothing but… a prostitute. When she felt his coarse hands brush against her mascara stained cheeks, she felt a jolt travel through her spine, a jolt that only added to the powerful tremors that her body was undergoing. His raspy yet pleasing voice chimed in her ears, as he offered to make her some coffee before retiring for bed. She nodded weakly, agreeing that the caffeine would be some help in calming her tense nerves and perhaps could lessen the incessant, new beating of her strangely erratic heart.

It must be acidity, she thought.

As he moved towards the kitchen, she ventured to his restroom to wash away her makeup ridden face. She hoped that the cool water would cool her peculiarly warm body. After cleaning the traces of the mascara-lined tears that she had previously shed, she settled back into the couch only to be overcome by sleep.

After preparing coffee, Arnav put the two steaming mugs on a china tray and quickly proceeded to return to the living room, hoping to engage in a conversation about what had occurred between the two of them before. He was a bit stunned at how involved he was becoming with her circumstances and pain. He felt an urgency to hear about her story and what had compelled her into selling her body, an urgency to see if he could help her out of her precarious situation.

But he was a bit disappointed as he saw the silhouette of a sleeping woman sprawled across his recliner. Disappointed, until he glanced at the features of the exquisite face. She had washed away the make up that she used to attract clients, and what was left was a natural ruddy blush on her fair, naturally glowing face. Her lips were a beautiful pink, and they looked so soft and, dare he say it, inviting, once the harsh dark lipstick she wore was washed away. Her hair, freed from the cheap brown wig, was very long, dark and thick, tied into a soft plait that rested along her back. He guessed that it was hidden as it was too long and traditional to attract the men looking for a sexy, modern woman to use for the night. Free strands had crept over her peaceful face, and his hands itched to latch them behind her ear.

But as he looked to glance at his favorite feature of hers, he was distraught. Her shining and captivating emeralds had hidden the reality of what lay underneath them. Dark circles that seemed to be etched into her skin permanently were what kept this woman from bordering perfection. She worked all night and was probably expected to leave the minute her job was done. No wonder those bruises adorned her eyes.

As he studied her face to his hearts content, his eyes caught sight of the small clutch she had brought along with her to his apartment. Tempted, he opened the bag and found cheap condoms, breath mints, and to his delight, an ID.

Khushi Kumari Gupta

This girl whose precious eyes only voiced agony…. was named Khushi.
