Part 3
Brushing her tears away fiercely, Pooja replied, "Kuch nahin. Excuse me, Ma'm", before stepping around Khushi to walk down the stairs.
Khushi turned around to call after her, but was interrupted by a bleak-faced NK who walked out of the cabin, having been told tersely by Arnav that he would speak to him at home. "Oh God, ab toh mein gaya! Nannav mujhe mincemeat kar dega!"
Turning to her dewar, Khushi asked, "Kya baat hain Nanheji? Ab kya kiya aapke Nannav ne? Aur woh ladki isi cabin se nikali thi naah, jo abhi roti chali gayi?"
Sighing, NK replied, "Uss lakdi ka naam bhi mat lena, Khushiji. Din barbaad kiya usne. Khud Nannav se gaaliyan suni aur mujhe bhi sunaya!"
"Kya? Arnavji uss ladki ko gaaliyan di?", Khushi asked, her shock making her shout out the question, which reached Arnav who was just opening the door of the cabin.
"What? Main aur ladki ko gaali? Woh bhi ek candidate ko? NK, if you don't know the language, stop trying to talk in it! I just took back my job offer, Khushi!"
Understanding now, Khushi was about to laugh it off but the memory of the girl's broken face forced her to ask, "Par baat kya hai, Arnavji? Kya kiya usne?"
Still miffed by the thought of the promised tongue-lashing from his cousin, NK replied, "Got me arrested for no reason, that's what she did!"
Predictably, Khushi erupted, "Kya? Jail mein? Kyun? Kab?"
Sighing as he realised that the whole story would have to be rehashed, Arnav sat down on the sofa, pulling out his palmtop, while NK launched into an animated rendering of his harrowing moments in Mumbai. Looking up towards the end of it, just in time to see hear wife's indignant snarl at the injustice meted out to her darling dewar, Arnav thought, "And there she blows! God save that girl if she ever lands up in front of Khushi Kumari Gupta Singh Raizada!"
**************************
The next evening, at the temple, seeing no sign of Anjali who had gone for her usual chat with the Panditji before the aarti began, Khushi got up to go in search of her. Walking around the pillared hall, she heard her Di's soothing voice before she saw her. Anjali was talking to a girl standing trembling before the Panditji, who was looking down at her sadly. Seeing Khushi, Anjali gave the girl's hand a gentle sqeeze before turning to her sister-in-law.
Motioning to Khushi that she would come to her, Anjali went up and grabbing Khushi's extended hand, walked back to the Mandir. Once both had sat down comfortably, Khushi asked, "Kaun thi woh, Di? Kisi museebat mein thi, kya?"
"Haan, Khushiji. Bechaari, apni naukri chodna pada, aur doosri naukri bhi nahi mil rahi." Anjali sighed, before remembering why she had started talking to the girl in the first place. "Waise, Khushiji, woh aapke purane gaon ki rehnewaali thi, Malihabad. Isi tarah toh humari baatein shuroo huyi. Aur dekho naah, aapse milwaana bhool hi gaye!"
"Arre waah!", Khushi exclaimed, "Phir toh unse milna hi padega. Waise, Di, kya pareshaani thi usski?"
Recognising the crusader look on Khushi's face, Anjali smiled, "Darasal uska parivaar Malihabad mein hain aur woh Mumbai mein ek hotel mein kaam kar rahi thi. Wahan management se kuch problem tha aur uske ghar se bhi pressure tha wapas aane ke liye, toh yahaan Dilli mein ek offer milte hi chod diya. Magar yahaan aane ke baad woh offer bhi haath se gaya."
Just then, the bells began to ring signalling the commencement of the evening aarti and the women went silent. As soon as it got over, Khushi leapt up, eager to meet the girl, and shaking her head fondly at Khushi's child-like glee, Anajli led her to the back, where the girl was sitting lost in thought. No sooner had she looked up that Khushi hissed, "Tum!"
Staring at Khushi as if seeing an apparition, Pooja got to her feet. Confused as she saw the lady who was all warm and kind earlier now looking as if she wanted to tear her into little pieces, she blurted, "Aap?"
"Haan, hum! Kyun humein bhi giraftaar karwaana hai, kya? Tumhari itni himmat! Yeh sab karwaane ke baad Arnavji ke paas kaam ke liye aa gayi!", Whipping around to an astounded Anjali, Khushi said, "Di, aapko pata hain, yeh ladki hi thi jo Nanheji ko giraftaar karvaaya tha, Mumbai mein!"
Having been a witness to the grilling Arnav had given to NK the day before, Anjali nodded, her lips pursed as she locked eyes with her sister-in-law, while Pooja stood frozen as she realised that these women were related to Arnav Singh Riazada and Mr. Mohanty.
Turning back to Pooja, Khushi was about to continue her rant, when the girl clasped her hands together and stuttered, "Mujhe maaf kar deejiye. Mujhe pata nahi aap donon ka unse kya rishta hain, lekin mera yakeen keejiye, main sharminda hoon ki meri wajah se unke saath aisi naainsaafi hua. Shaayad iski saza mujhe ab mil rahi hain ki aisi zaroori samay mein apne parivaar ka madad nahi kar pa rahi hoon."
Folding her hands and bowing slightly, Pooja ran down the steps of the temple, her flight leaving a lasting impression on Anjali and Khushi.
**************************
Later that day, Khushi, while recounting the incident to her Amma over phone, asked, "Amma, kya aap kisi Yadav naam ke parivaar ko jaante hain, Malihabad ka? Unki ek beti bhi hain, Pooja."
"Humein yaad toh nahi aa rahi hain, bitiya. Tanik sochne do", Garimaji replied before asking about the rest of the family and bidding goodnight to her daughter.
Keeping the phone down, she walked out to join Anjali and Payal who were seated beside the pool. She had just settled down comfortably when Dhruv walked in, followed by NK who was punctual in returning home by 6 o'clock, unlike his workaholic cousins whose wives usually ended up waiting atleast for a couple more hours before they showed up.
Setting his bagdown, Dhruv collapsed on the floor, leaning against his Di's legs, while NK predictably called out, "Payal Bhabi, bahut bhoot lag rahi hain. Give me some food, please."
Chuckling, Payal got up, "Bhoot nahi, Nanheji, bhookh! Aur haan, abhi laati hoon. Dhruv, tumhein kuch chahiye?"
Smiling up at her, Dhruv replied, "Just tea, Bhabi. Khana main Bhaiyya aur Bhai ke aane ke baad le loonga, unke saath." Turning to grin at his favourite person there, Dhruv continued, "Par Khushi Bhabi ki banayi huyi special aloo ke pakore mila toh woh zaroor khaoonga!"
Leaning over to pull at his hair, Khushi grinned, "Khwaab dekhte rehna! Ab nahi milega, dekho waqt kya hua. Kal shaam ko jaldi laut aana apne research-visearch se, hum banaa denge."
Looking over at NK, Anjali said, "Waise, NK Bhai, pata hai hum aur Khushiji mandir mein kisse mile? Woh Mumbai-waali hain naah, usse! Haath se naukri nikal gayi naah, bahut ro rahi thi, bechaari."
Having been let in on the whole story by his Bhabi, Dhruv teased his cousin, "Kya, NK Bhai! Ek toh hamesha lakdi-lakdi kehke ghoomte ho aur jab ek lakdi mili toh usko bhagaa diya! Galti ho gayi bechaari se, maaf kar do naah. Aur ARH mein naukri phirse dilwaa do, shayad aabhaari hokar woh aapke peeche-peeche aayegi. What say?"
Lost in thought, not realising that he had an audience, NK mumbled, "Haan, Dhruv, main bhi yahi soch raha tha. Poor girl, she was crying, you know. Maybe I should call her..."
"What the!"
Author's Note:
Hello my darlings! Longer update for all those who had cribbed - esp: Vi and Fauzi!

Arnav - 29 (he was 28 when the serial started in 2011)
Khushi - almost 25 (there's a reason for the almost, obviously!)
Anjali - 33
Akash - 27
Payal - 26
NK - 26

Part 3
Brushing her tears away fiercely, Pooja replied, "Nothing. Excuse me, Ma'm", before stepping around Khushi to walk down the stairs.
Khushi turned around to call after her, but was interrupted by a bleak-faced NK who walked out of the cabin, having been told tersely by Arnav that he would speak to him at home. "Oh God, I'm a gonner! Nannav will make mincemeat of me!"
Turning to her dewar, Khushi asked, "What happened, Nanheji? What did your Nannav do now? And that girl who came out of this cabin, why was she crying?"
Sighing, NK replied, "Don't even mention her, Khushiji. Spoiled my life! Got yelled at from Nannav and got me yelled at too !"
"Kya? Arnavji made her cry?", Khushi asked, her shock making her shout out the question, which reached Arnav who was just opening the door of the cabin.
"What? Come on, NK! I just took back my job offer, Khushi!"
Understanding now, Khushi was about to laugh it off but the memory of the girl's broken face forced her to ask, "But what happened, Arnavji? What did she do?"
Still miffed by the thought of the promised tongue-lashing from his cousin, NK replied, "Got me arrested for no reason, that's what she did!"
Predictably, Khushi erupted, "What? Arrested? Why? When?"
Motioning to Khushi that she would come to her, Anjali went up and grabbing Khushi's extended hand, walked back to the Mandir. Once both had sat down comfortably, Khushi asked, "Who was that, Di? In some kind of trouble, was she?"
"Haan, Khushiji. Poor thing, had to quit her job and now she's not getting one anywhere." Anjali sighed, before remembering why she had started talking to the girl in the first place. "Waise, Khushiji, she's from your old village, Malihabad. That's how I started chatting with her, and look, forgot to introduce you!"
"Arre waah!", Khushi exclaimed, "Then I have to meet her. Waise, Di, what was her issue?"
Recognising the crusader look on Khushi's face, Anjali smiled, "Her family is in Malihabad and she was working in a hotel in Mumbai. Some issue with the management and pressure from home, so when she got an offer here, she quit her job. But after coming here, the new offer didn't go through."
"Haan, hum! Why, going to get me arrested too? What nerve! After everything, you had the nerve to come to Arnavji for a job!", Whipping around to an astounded Anjali, Khushi said, "Di, this is the girl who got Nanheji arrested in Mumbai!"
Having been a witness to the grilling Arnav had given to NK the day before, Anjali nodded, her lips pursed as she locked eyes with her sister-in-law, while Pooja stood frozen as she realised that these women were related to Arnav Singh Riazada and Mr. Mohanty.
Turning back to Pooja, Khushi was about to continue her rant, when the girl clasped her hands together and stuttered, "Please forgive me. I don't know what your relation is, but please belive me, I'm ashamed that he had to suffer because of me. I'll regret forever the injustice I did to Mr. Mohanty. And maybe, this is my punishment, that I'm not able to help my family when they need it the most."
Folding her hands and bowing slightly, Pooja ran down the steps of the temple, her flight leaving a lasting impression on Anjali and Khushi.
**************************
Later that day, Khushi, while recounting the incident to her Amma over phone, asked, "Amma, do you know a family called Yadav, in Malihabad? They have a daughter, Pooja."
"I'm not able to recollect now, bitiya. Let me see..", Garimaji replied before asking about the rest of the family and bidding goodnight to her daughter.
Keeping the phone down, she walked out to join Anjali and Payal who were seated beside the pool. Chuckling, Payal got up, "Bhoot nahi, Nanheji, bhookh! I'll bring some now. Dhruv, do you need anything?"
Smiling up at her, Dhruv replied, "Just tea, Bhabi. I'll eat after Bhaiyya and Bhai come home." Turning to grin at his favourite person there, Dhruv continued, "But if I can get some of Khushi Bhabi's special aloo ke pakore..."
Leaning over to pull at his hair, Khushi grinned, "Dream on! Look at the time! Come home early from your research-visearch, then I'll make you some."
Looking over at NK, Anjali said, "Waise, NK Bhai, do you know who I and Khushiji met at the mandir today? Your Mumbai-waali! And she was crying her new job slipped through her hands."
Having been let in on the whole story by his Bhabi, Dhruv teased his cousin, "Kya, NK Bhai! You wander around chanting lakdi-lakdi and now when you finally had the chance to land one, you chased her away! Poor girl made a mistake, can't you forgive her and get her a job in ARH? Maybe, brimming over with gratitude, she'll fall for you! What say?"
Lost in thought, not realising that he had an audience, NK mumbled, "Haan, Dhruv, I was thinking the same thing. Poor girl, she was crying, you know. Maybe I should call her..."
