Arnav is devastated but plays a move with Malik, giving up his property for the time being. He tell Nani about his plan._____________________________________________________Chapter Eleven Payal stared at her phone as her conversation with Arnav ended. "Was that the right thing to do?" she wondered. She looked up and stared out of the verandah, looking for solace amongst the winds. "Did I do the right thing supporting Khushi?" "Is it wrong to go against Buaji's wishes at this hour?" So many questions played in her mind to which she had no answers. The only thing she was sure of was that she was going to be her baby sister's pillar, like she had always been. She chided Khushi when she was wrong; she never compromised on that but this time something in her heart told her that Khushi wasn't wrong. "She's still baby to us but in reality, she was an adult after all. She should be given some liberty" decided Payal as she turned back to return to their room and face Khushi.
She stood at the doorway and watched Khushi from a distance. She seemed so aloof and down, both of which were expressions which she never donned. Even in their darkest hours, Khushi always had a smile on. Her smiles may not have the brightest of their kinds through trying times but they were something that lingered on wherever and whenever she went. It was excruciating to watch her sister go through so many false allegations and that too, allegations of the most atrocious kind. Her Pagli's eyes were red from all the mute crying and now they were staring blankly at the wall in front of her with her hands around her knees. Payal clutched her fingers; this is not how it was supposed to be. She walked up to finally talk things out.
Khushi heard Payal's footsteps and turned back to look at her. She tried to smile but it faltered mid-way. It was getting hard to practice the art she had mastered over the years- Smiling and that was the last thing she wanted her Jiji to see. Payel already had her office worries and she didn't want to bog her down with worries of her own. Quickly gathering herself up, she turned and looked away, trying not to meet her Jiji's eyes. As she ducked away, little did she realize that Payal already knew what was going through her mind. Payal was almost like a mother to her, knowing each of her expressions and feelings inside out. After all, she was the one who Khushi gripped tight on nights when there was no electricity; she was the one who baby Khushi ran to when she injured her knees while trying to pick mangoes. "How times have changed" wondered Payal as she saw he sister trying to put up a faade which had never existed between them ever before.
Payal walked further up to the bed and gently put her hands on Khushi's head and started caressing it. She knew Khushi loved it when she did it and there was going to be no way she was going to deny it. She continued doing it, hoping to loosen Khushi up. After what seemed like hours, Khushi finally spoke up with trembling voice. "Kya kaha Babuji ne?" (What did Babuji say?) she asked, careful that her voice didn't break in to the sobs she was trying to control. Her throat was hurting from all the angst built up inside her. Was he mad? Would her ever forgive her? Khushi was scared.
"Main Babuji se baat nehi kar rahi thi" (I wasn't talking to Babuji) replied Payal, normally. Khushi jerked back to look at Payal's face. "What did she mean by that she wasn't talking to Babuji? Who was she telling what had happened during the day?" wondered Khushi as she looked up at Payal's face with questioning eyes. Payal nodded her head, affirming what she had just said and sat down beside Khushi on the bed. She took a hand of Khushi in her's and said "Main Arnav Singh Raizada se baat kar rahi thi" (I was talking to Arnav Singh Raizada).
Khushi's eyes grew wide in shock. All this time, she was worrying about ways to contact her Arnav Ji so she could EXPLAIN why she said what she had and why they couldn't ever meet again and all along her Jiji was talking to him? Was she mad at her that she wasn't in light regarding this? Or was she happy that her Jiji had been caring enough to talk things out with him? The contrasting thoughts expressed itself as a confused expression on Khushi's face. Her reaction was ambiguous. Payal understood Khushi was trying to fix the puzzle in her mind and waited patiently for her to react.
As moments of silence passed, Khushi questioned meekly "Kya kaha unhone?" (What did he say?), trying to keep the excitement out of her voice. There was a rush of emotions inside her. Payal knew that whatever was going on, it would be better if Arnav and Khushi settled it by themselves. They didn't need her to fix it. Keeping the conversation to herself, she cupped Khushi's cheek and said softly "Khushi, I'm very sure you know your limits and you know where to stop. I believe in you. Don't push things right now but make sure you take baby steps towards making things right". Saying this, she caresses Khushi's face one more time and got up to leave to talk Buaji about letting Khushi go to college. As she walked out, Khushi stared at her back quizzically, trying to figure out her cryptic message.
~
It was almost two months that Arnav and Khushi's schedule had returned to their former self. Khushi went to college by the metro and Arnav never came to pick her up. Well, saying 'never' would be a lie as he waited for a couple of days initially after the chaos by the signal but she never showed up. Trying not to push his luck anymore, he had stopped waiting altogether. Sometimes they would cross each other's path in the campus and share an eye lock before Khushi would turn around to break it and walk away, killing Arnav and herself a little more every time it happened.
Arnav was a wreck emotionally, detaching himself form everybody including the two friends he had: Akash and NK. Anjali was long gone. Arnav didn't even look up whenever they bumped into each other and walked past her while Akash and NK said their meek hellos and moved on to. Her betrayal was a shock to everyone and the two boys couldn't blame Arnav for distancing himself. There was just one and a half months of college left and they had to fix this before Arnav would leave for America, they decided.
NK didn't know Arnav like Akash did but Arnav was one his best 'wingman'. They had met each other through Akash during their first year and Arnav thought of him to be a harmless and carefree chap but little did he know the other shade of him. NK was a person who could go up to any extent to bring a smile on his loved one's face. He was compassionate and that was his greatest strength. It was his 'compassion for others' that brought Arnav closer to him. It was a value which wasn't very easily 'available' in the 'market'.
They had tried communicating to Arnav about the trying times but were turned down every single time. He didn't even show up for their little beer parties at Akash's place where they would generally go up to the roof and talk and have fun to their heart's content. Arnav was too aloof. They would only see him in college and that was it. It seemed like he had drowned himself in his pain and books.
Just as the class got over and the professor got ready to leave, Arnav took up his notebook and pen got up to leave as well. As he was about to step out, he heard a call "Nannav!" Arnav looked back and saw a grave Akash standing right before him and behind him was NK, with furrowed eyebrows. The next thing Arnav knew that he was sitting on the couch of the nearest Caf coffee day sipping on coffee with his two mates. After a lot of prodding from Akash and NK, Arnav had told them whateve had happened in his own crisp way. The air around them was solemn and no one said a word, too surprised at the happening. Akash took of his specs and clanged it on the glass table before and massaged his temple. "Why again? And this time it's even more to handle" thought Akash but NK, in the other hand, kept his cool. His mind was working out ways for Arnav to meet Khushi. Arnav was too lost in his own as he slurped on his warm drink and no one was there to break the silence. No one even noticed a lady clad in short off white dress walking up to them.
"Arnav" she called as she walked up to the table and the three guys looked up to see who it was. "Lavanya?" said Arnav, a little surprised. He got up to greet her and the other two followed. "Lavanya, this is Akash and NK" he introduced his friends to her. "And she is Lavanya. Lavanya Kashyap. Mr. Kashyap's.." he was about to provide her full information when Lavanya cut him short and extended her hand to greet the two guys. "Nice to meet you" she said pleasantly.
"May I?" she asked, gesturing towards the vacancy beside NK. "Of course" replied NK and shifted to make space for the pretty lady. Arnav smiled slightly, a first in the recent days. "Would you like anything?" asked Akash out of formality as they sat down. "Oh! No. Thank you. I'm here with my friends. They're waiting for me over there" replied Lavanya, pointing towards a table over her shoulder. Akash nodded in understanding. No one knew what to say until Lavanya spoke up.
Lavanya looked at Arnav, trying to decipher his emotions but couldn't. He had one of the toughest masks on but he did look tired and exhausted. His eyes were hollow and sunken. "How's Naniji?" she asked curtly, trying to strike up a conversation. "She's doing well. Thanks for asking" replied Arnav as he took the cheque from the waiter and ruffled through his wallet, not once looking up to face her. "Arnav" she sighed with slight exasperation. "I'm sorry about whatever happened. It wasn't.." she started but was cut short. "It's not your fault" replied Arnav, his voice devoid of any emotions and picked up his keys from the table and walked off.
No one stopped him but stared at him until he clanged the glass door of the caf close and walked away. "How did you know?" asked Akash. "Everyone in office is talking about it" she replied, tearing her looks away from the door. Akash nodded and got up to leave. "It was nice meeting you" he said with a small smile before he followed Arnav's trail out of the caf. Lavanya was getting up too, when NK held her back. She looked back with surprise. "You're from Khushi's college, aren't you?" asked NK, looking up from his seat.
~
Khushi's class had just got over. She was snuggling in her jhola and dreading going back home. She didn't like the atmosphere these days. Jiji won't be home now and it would be just Buaji and her in the house. She had tried so hard but Buaji's anger towards her didn't falter even once. She was extremely strained, measuring every word she said to her. Lost in deep thought, she almost didn't notice her department seniors entering her class.
"Ok, First years! We're here to announce something" greeted Lavanya cheerfully. Most of the boys in Khushi's class swooned. Lavanya Kashyap was the hottest senior in their department and they would give anything to spend a day out with her. "As we all know, our college Basketball team has reached the University Finals this year and the final match will start in another one hour. Our opponent has been undefeated for five years in a row and I guess all of you can imagine how intense this match is going to be. So, to cheer them, we want all the first years to come along with us to cheer out team up. No excuses will be taken" she said, implementing her conspiracy with NK. She had bought in a couple of her friends with her pretty smile. Most of them rushed out at the first go, they were planning to go anyway but few lingered behind and Lavanya noticed Khushi was one amongst them. "We've talked it out with the professor; you'll be getting an attendance for it" Lavanya lied through her teeth. Ultimately, every remaining being trudged out of the class.
"Hay Devi Maiyyan! Hum toh Arnav Ji ke college ke khilaaf khel rahe hain!" (Hay Devi Maiyyan! We're playing against Arnav Ji's college) she feared in her mind. What if they met again? SJe knew Arnav was passionate about this game and was a member of the team too but recently, he had injured his forearm and couldn't play this season. He was pretty upset about it and Khushi had to talk an entire night to calm him down. Arnav was always good at extra curricula's along with academics. He was in the debating society as well as the sports team. She was sure he was going to be there. What if they met? She couldn't bring herself to turn away again. She had done it a little too many times and it hurt really badly.
"Khushi, kuch nehi hoga. Pura university aa raha hain match dekhkne. Itne saare logon ke beech mein Arnav Ji se milne ka kya sambhavna hain? Zyada soch mat. Bass chal pad!" she countered in her mind, trying to regain her composure. (Khushi, nothing's going to happen. The entire university is coming to watch the movie. What's the probability of meeting Arnav Ji in such a huge crowd? You're thinking too much. Keep walking.) She checked her watch; it was only two-thirty pm. The game would last almost and an hour and it was ok if she reached home by six. Not bothering anymore, she continued walking towards the court. The greying sky went unnoticed by everyone.
She settled on the long bleacher seats with her classmates and Preeto by her side who was chattering away without a care but something in Khushi's heart tugged her. She knew he was there somewhere around. She looked around but found no trace of him or his friends. Breathing in deeply, she tried calming herself down and turned to face Preeto, trying to drown her worries in her words. As the match started, the crowd went frenzy and it was almost impossible to hear what Preeto was saying and turned her attention towards the game. Her college was red and Arnav's was blue and suddenly, the image of Arnav wearing the night blue silk shirt from their first meeting in the lawn flashed before her eyes. Trying to evade it, she concentrated on the game even harder. It was almost half time when she noticed a blue player slip is ground and fall on his hand. The crowd ooh-ed. His team gathered around her and a paramedic rushed in. It seemed like he was injured and just then, the referee declared half time of fifteen minutes.
She turned her attention back to Preeto and tried hard to hang onto every word the girl was uttering but it was getting difficult by every passing moment. Something in heart was tugging incessantly. As she heard the announcement for the game to resume, she fixed her eyes on the court. The players started pouring in; familiar faces from the last half. She noticed each one of them as they walked in but sucked in her breath at one; Arnav Singh Raizada. As he entered, his college crowd cheered. He was one of the best men in their team and he was missed thoroughly throughout the season. He walked in with is loose half sleeve blue jersey and shorts, a heavy pair of sneakers, his hair was ruffled and there was an elastic bandage around his forearm. Most of the girls died then and there but Khushi Kumari Gupta was too shocked to react. She had no idea that her Raizada was on the bench. "Stupid me! Should've guessed!" she cringed in her thought. She had forgotten to breathe for almost a minute. She watched him expertly cut his way through his opponents, dribbling, passing, blocking. He looked so perfect on the wooden court. He looked so perfect as he jumped his ground to basket the ball. He looked so perfect as he swiped off his sweat and jerked his damp hair. Unable to focus on the game anymore, she gave up.
Scores of the two teams increased steadily. Everyone cheered and hooted at the first opportunity. Everything was in a whirl. The players and the crowd, everyone was equally passionate. Every player seemed like an expert in their art and Arnav was no exception. The game was so intense that her attention automatically shifted to the game and came back to him only when the ball was in his hand. Every time one team led, the other team's college went crazy and cheered the rooftop off the stadium. She cheered in a reflex when Arnav scored but sobered down as she earned angry glares from her college mates. Preeto sensed something was wrong as Khushi cheered only when the cute guy from blue team scored and not the rest. As the last twenty minutes came to an end, the score board showed 74 for both the teams.
It was storming heavily outside and could be seen through the transparent roof. The rumbling of the thunders could be heard as the raindrops pitter-pattered on the roof. The environment was severe as everyone watched with eager eyes. The game was on over-time. Khushi didn't know who to support. Emotions waged through her. The game was only on for five more minutes which was almost about to end. Khushi's eyes followed the movement of the ball. Only one more minute, she checked the board. Her heart skipped a beat as she saw a blue member pass the ball to Arnav, who expertly and carefully cut his way through his opponents. He passed it back to his team member and before long the ball was back to him and finally, as he neared the basket, he jumped with all his might and slam dunked the ball into the basket.
The stadium watch buzzed out and the crowd went insane. As half of them sat back down morose, the other half rushed down to the court. Khushi smiled, unable to express her emotions. She watched as the crowd lifted Arnav and his team into the air, he was happy. Yes, he was. He was smiling, not knowing that it was his first big smile since she left. Unable to figure out the thoughts inside her, she got up to leave. Lavanya, who was sitting right behind her, noticed it. She watched as Preeto held her back but Khushi said that she had to go home and walked out. Lavanya quickly called NK up and informed him about what she saw, enticing NK into action.
NK, as a fellow comrade, was near the court. He rushed into the crowd, trying to find Arnav. As he spotted him, NK caught Arnav by his biceps and pulled him out of the crowd. After a lot of push and pull, they came out in one corner of the court and both of them were heavily panting. "Khushi Ji!" panted NK, not looking up. Arnav's eyes shot up. "Where?" he murmured and watched NK point towards the big gate, the exit 4. Without a word, he rushed out. She was here! His heart jumped with joy. She had seen him play; his last match in the university. She would be proud of him, wouldn't she? He paced up.
As he walked out the hallway, he noticed it was raining heavily. It was actually a storm. The wind was furious, making the trees sway to its dictation. No wonder no one was exiting the stadium. As he scanned the area, he saw a petite frame in orange and yellow running down the road, a complete contrast to the grey atmosphere looming around. He ran down the same path, following her. It would be futile to scream in all this wind. As he neared her, "Khushi!!" he screamed and watched as her steps stopped. He smiled, he still affected her.
Khushi didn't turn around. She didn't know what to do and stood at her place, shivering. She could feel him walking up behind her. He threw the bottle in his hand away and gently placed a hand on her shoulder and turned her around. Their time in the library came gushing back. He had turned her around in the exact same way. They stared in to each other's eyes, oblivious to the tempest around them. The way her damp locks clung to her cheeks mesmerized him. So simple, so beautiful. Her eyes, with a hint of green and pretty. His fingers traced the locks on her cheeks and brushed them aside as the other hand closed around her. Stepping in, he tilted her chin up with his finger. Her lips, cold and quivering, were waiting to be kissed. He bent down slowly and claimed her lips with his own and rejoiced as she reciprocated his love and wound her arms around his body too.
