Chapter 6 : What you see is what you get
Scene 1
[Arnav's SUV]
Arnav is driving and Aakash is in the co driver's seat. Aakash's bags are stashed in the trunk of the car. Arnav is tapping at the steering wheel impatiently as he waits for the traffic lights to turn green. He glances sideways to see a pensieve looking Aakash staring out the window.
"Kya hua Aakash? Is something wrong?" Arnav enquires. Aakash sighs.
"Nai Bhai. Bas aaj subah ke bare mein soch raha tha," he mumbles.
Arnav frowns as he too thinks back to the breakfast at Shantivan that had quickly turned into an argument driven drama. Mamiji had thrown a fit on hearing Aakash was indeed leaving the house and even shouted at Arnav for his inability to make Aakash stay back. Dadiji gave her two cents about how whatever happens, happens for good which infuriated Mamiji for the first time. Funny, how circumstances makes one change parties. Nani was upset with Arnav as well, but he had explained to her that this arrangement was just temporary and Aakash will return soon. And "soon" is such an ambiguous term; it could mean a few days or a few weeks.
"Don't worry Aakash. Ye tension kuch din tak hi rahega," Arnav says reassuredly. Aakash nods in assent. "You're going to be with Payal, jaisa tum chahte the," Arnav reminds him in hopes to change his mood. Aakash smiles in reply.
Arnav's thoughts go back to last night when he was holding Khushi's picture. The last time they met they had ended up fighting. No. She yelled at me quite justifiably and I yelled at her quite idiotically. He mentally corrects himself. Khushi had no clue that he was accompanying Aakash to pick up her sister. I wonder how she'd react? Arnav remembers that after the fight, she had been upset too because he had blurted out his intentions behind his spur-of-the-moment decision. But she'll probably be happy when she comes to know I'm gifting Aakash his new house and that I changed my mind about the decision after all. Arnav thinks to himself smugly. But what if she gets pissed off again? A frown appears on his face. He hadn't figured that angle. Well angry or not, I am going to talk to Khushi today. Period. A strange feeling tingles through his body and he realises he is excited to see her.
"Bhai are you ok?" Aakash's question snaps him out of his thoughts. He glances sideways to see his brother staring at him confusedly.
"Yep!" Arnav declares confidently as the traffic starts moving again and he eases his car into the lane.
[Cut to Gupta House]
There is a mad chaos going in the house; Khushi can be seen rushing around from one room to another having a broom and duster in her hand, Buaji is in the kitchen huffing and puffing over the gas stove as she is preparing breakfast. Payal is in her room finishing up some last minute packing.
"Haye re Nandkishore! Hum keh rahe the na tumko Khusee subah jaldi uth jana. Bahutaye kaam hai subah. Ab dekho kaise daud laga rahi ho yahan se wahan!" Buaji addresses Khushi who is now cleaning up the living room.
"Buaji, hum jaldi uth gaye the. Par subah Vimala aunty aayi thi. Unke ghar ke paani ka pump kharab ho gaya tha. Hum usi ko theek karne gaye the. Humein kya pata tha wahan itni der lag jayegi," Khushi mumbles sheepishly.
"Haan duniya mein ek hoo tum hi to mechanic ho, hai na Sanaka Devi? Koi bhi cheej kharab hui nai ki tum pahunch jaat ho usko theek karne!" Buaji says exasperatedly. "Woo Vimala bhi na! Mechanic ke paise bachane ke liye hi bulaye rahi hogi tumko!" Khushi rushes around ignoring Buaji.
[Outside Gupta House]
Arnav and Aakash get down from the car and make their way towards the entrance from the courtyard side of the house. Just as Arnav walks inside the paddock, Aakash suddenly stops tapping his pockets.
"Bhai, lagta hai mera phone gaadi mein hi reh gaya hai. Aap chaliye mein aata hun," he says. Arnav nods and throws him the car keys. He stops for a moment and looks at the house. It hadn't been very long ago that he had spent an entire day here when Khushi had lied to him about Buaji getting sick. His eyes move to the side door where Khushi had pushed him away and against the verandah fence. And then the kiss on her cheek... Even this courtyard had a special memory linked to it. He remembered when the first time he had come to stay here, it had been decorated with rangoli and Khushi was ordering him not to step on it. A small smile appears on his face.
[Cut to Gupta House, living room]
Walking from the living space towards the kitchen, Khushi suddenly bangs her leg against a bucket on the floor and lets out a yell of pain.
"Owww!"
Buaji immediately shouts in concern. "Kaa hua? Phir gir padi kaa tum Parmeswari?"
"Arre nahin Buaji. Ye balti rakhi hai yahan, usi par per lag gaya," Khushi moans.
"Balti kaahe rakhi hai kamre ke beechon beech?" Buaji enquires as she peers into the bucket.
"Arre Buaji woh pochha lagaya tha na, usi ka paani hai." Khushi explains and Buaji moves away pinching her nose in disgust.
"Arre to isse ghar mein kaa pradarsan ke liye rakhi ho? Aakash bitwa aate hi honge. Yii ganda paani phenko jaldi," Buaji orders and goes back to her work in the kitchen. Khushi picks up the bucket by its handle and starts walking towards the bathroom when Buaji again stops her. "Khusee, aangan ki mitti sookh gai hai aur din mein dhool udat hai bahut. Paani wahin phenk do!"
Khushi turns around and starts walks to the main door opening out to the courtyard. She tips the bucket slightly, picks it up from the bottom and throws the murky brown water in a clean projectile motion...
... on a flabbergasted ARNAV SINGH RAIZADA!!!
It feels like someone is playing the scene in slow motion. Khushi lets out a loud gasp, the bucket still in her hands in mid air, her mouth forming a completely round 'o' as she stands horrified gaping at the scene in front of her. Arnav's wearing his sunglasses but his arms are thrown outwards. The water drips from his favourite grey suit forming a small puddle near his shoes. For a moment neither of them moves. Khushi's eyes take in his soaked appearance from head to toe and then she stares at his rigid posture and the expression on his face which seems to be saying "Did that just happen?". A giggle suddenly escapes her and she drops the bucket with a loud clang to clasp her hands on her mouth to restrain herself. Hearing her giggle finally shakes Arnav out of his trance. He slowly takes off his Aviators and stares at her with narrowed eyes. His brain makes a coordination with his mouth and the first retort to come out as expected is -
"WHAT THE - ?"
"What the nahin. WATER tha," Khushi immediately replies and, much to Arnav's annoyance, starts immediately laughing. Hearing her laughter, Buaji and Payal come running outside, as does Aakash from the car. All three of them are dumbstruck at the scene, their eyes passing between Khushi, who's now holding on to one of the pillars in the verandah for support as she goes on laughing, to an infuriated Arnav who is now shaking his arms to get rid of the water from his suit blazer.
"Bhai?" Aakash is at a loss of words as he walks to Arnav. At that very instant Buaji summons Aakash inside, "Aakash bitwa! Arre tum baahar kaahe khade ho? Bheetar aao!" She walks Aakash inside the house holding him by his arm not giving him another chance to speak to Arnav. Khushi is still standing by the door but her laughter has subsided now. She walks down the stairs with a superior air, smiling mockingly at Arnav and stops a few inches from his face.
"Arre, ye kya hua? Aap to bheeg gaye," Khushi states the obvious in her sugary sweet voice. Arnav is fuming in anger. Ok this is NOT how I intended her to react when we met. She looks at him with a satisfied smug. "Devi Maiyya, sabko apne kaamon ka phal zaroor deti hain Mr. Arnav Singh Raizada." Khushi declares dramatically and clicks her finger at his face, obviously correlating his rash decision about Payal to him getting drenched with water.
Once satisfied that she has mocked him enough, she turns around with a flourish to walk back into the house. But her foot slips in the muddy water of the courtyard and with a surprised "Ohhh!" she starts to fall. As an involuntary reaction, Arnav immediately slips his arms around her, breaking her fall. Her hands tightly grab his arms in mechanical response. Her eyes are titghtly shut obviously fearing for the fall which never came.
She slowly opens her eyes and stares up at him with surprised eyes. Arnav stares back at her, his eyes tracing her eyes, her nose, her lips... Their breathing becomes laboured as his eyes linger there for a moment and then snaps back to her eyes. Somehow even through the foul smelling water he was drenched in, he could still smell her fragrance. The anger he was feeling a little while ago starts evaporating. As their hearts collectively start beating loudly, Khushi snaps out of her reverie. Hum Arnavji ki baahon mein hain! She starts struggling as the realisation hits her but his arms tighten around her waist and he holds her in place. She looks up at him in surprise again.
"Chodiye humein!" she hisses up at him. "Humne kaha chodiye humein!" she demands insistently.
Instantly hit with an idea, Arnav suddenly smirks at her. "Sure!" and he releases his grip on Khushi. She falls flat on her bottom in the same puddle of water with a thump. Her eyes and mouth are wide open in shock that Arnav just did that! Arnav sits on his haunch to be level with Khushi's eyes and says to her mirthfully. "Woh kya kaha tha tumne? Devi Maiyya sabko apne kaam ka phal zaroor deti hain, Ms. Khushi Kumari Gupta!" he finishes smoothly and walks over her outstretched legs and confidently strolls inside the house leaving a grumpy looking Khushi sitting in mud, massaging her backside.ENGLISH VERSION

"What happened Aakash? Is something wrong?" Arnav enquires. Aakash sighs.
"No Bhai. Just thinking about today morning," he mumbles.
Arnav frowns as he too thinks back to the breakfast at Shantivan that had quickly turned into an argument driven drama. "Haye re Nandkishore! Khusee, I told you to wake up early in the morning, didn't I?There's so much to do in the house. Now see how you are rushing from one place to another!" Buaji addresses Khushi who is now cleaning up the living room.
"Buaji, I did wake up early. But Vimala aunty came today morning. The water pump in their house wasn't giving problems. So I had gone to repair it. How could I know, I'll get held up there?" Khushi mumbles sheepishly.
"Yeah sure! You're the only mechanic in the whole world, aren't you Sanaka Devi? anything falls apart and you're there to repair it!" Buaji says exasperatedly. "That woman Vimala! She must have called you to save expenses on the mechanic!" Khushi rushes around ignoring Buaji.
[Outside Gupta House]
Arnav and Aakash get down from the car and make their way towards the entrance from the courtyard side of the house. Just as Arnav walks inside the paddock, Aakash suddenly stops tapping his pockets.

"No Buaji. There's this bucket kept here, I banged my leg against it," Khushi moans.
"Why is a bucket kept in the middle of the room?" Buaji enquires as she peers into the bucket.
"Arre Buaji I had wiped the floors clean a while ago. This bucket has the waste water." Khushi explains and Buaji moves away pinching her nose in disgust.
"Arre, so have you kept it in the house for display? Aakash bitwa must be on his way. Quickly throw away this water," Buaji orders and goes back to her work in the kitchen. Khushi picks up the bucket by its handle and starts walking towards the bathroom when Buaji again stops her. "Khusee, the soil has dried up in the courtyard and it's causing dust during the day time. Throw the water there to pat it down!"
Khushi turns around and starts walks to the main door opening out to the courtyard. She tips the bucket slightly, picks it up from the bottom and throws the murky brown water in a clean projectile motion...
