Chapter 17Shyam sat down on the sofa with his mug of tea and turned on his laptop. He loved spending the weekends with family.
"Anjali come here" he called his wife.
Anjali made herself comfortable, resting her head on his shoulder.
"Hmm?"
"So I found the girl"
"What?!" Anjali moved back and stared at her husband.
"Yes. I got some basic information on the internet and I don't want to dig deeper" he explained.
"Why not?"
"She seems like a decent girl. Its not proper to stalk her. Talk to Arnav and figure things out."
"I'll see" Anjali grumbled.
After what felt like hours to Ajnali, finally Shyam opened up her picture.
Gorgeous. That's the first word that came to her mind. She was in her graduation gown, it was a school picture.
"What does she do?" she asked in a mild tone, still staring at the picture.
"She just graduated. Her school life is like any other twenty two year olds. Her email address is here, if you want to be mean" he winked at her.
"Oh shutup! I don't understand, how on earth did chotte find her. We are states apart."
"Yeah I think you should let him know, you found out and talk with him. You're the only one he has Anjali."
"Yeah, but '"
"No buts. Don't you want him to settle down. This one is the first proper girl he has dated, someone he can consider for marriage. Let's do this the correct way."
"Fine, theek hai. I will talk to him tonight. What about nani, do we tell her?"
"After you and Arnav talk."
~~~
Arnav swirled the liquid around in the glass he was holding, deep in thought. Never had he imagined his di would find out about Khushi like that. It was so unexpected, so random.
He had no choice but to tell her everything and explain how and why it all happened. Surprisingly as he proceeded with this story, her anger calmed down. He even told her about their misunderstanding and how they couldn't get a chance to speak.
She gave him an obvious suggestion, which he, the great guy couldn't think of. She asked him to go visit her. No kind of communication is better than face to face.
There was nothing really complicated in this. He planned to declare his feelings and proposal, that's it, after that it was all on her.
But first he had to think of how to meet her. Should he just show up on her doorstep. Finding her address would be easy. What if she doesnt like it? Did he care? She had already caused him pain, he didnt care what her reaction would be.
~~~
So many times the thought of his wife having multipersonality disorder went through Shyams head in a day. He stared at how Anjali filled nani on everything, excitement barely hidden in her voice. Her mood changed drastically in very less time. Just few days ago she was so angry and now there wasnt an ounce of it left.
He was happy the siblings talked, Devi Maiyya knew how much they needed it.
"So Anjali do you think we can start preparing soon?" nani asked, her eyes shining with happiness.
"I think we can at least start thinking about everything nani" Anjali replied with the same look on her face.
The Raizada women couldnt help take their thinking to levels more high. Days passed as they decided on jewellery and clothes and were just waiting for chotte to confirm he got his girl, so they could swipe the card.
~~~
Khushi stretched her body like a cat, not bothering to cover her mouth while yawning.
"Khushi get your lazy butt up. Its been so many days and you have been just sitting at home doing nothing" said Payal looking at her laptop screen.
"Doing nothing? Incase you havent noticed, I hug ma, dad and you a gazillion times in a day, I eat, I watch t.v, I go out to shop, I shower, I pee, the list can go on" Khushi replied in a sleepy tone, still not done with stretching.
The short vacation had been really good for Khushi. She came back much more relaxed and happy. Her mind was definitely at rest. The world did not just revolve around her love life. There was so much more to do, for instance go watch dark night tonight with friends.
Sipping on her coffee later, Khushi went through her mail. Her heart skipped a beat when she picked up the envelope labeled from University of Chicago. There were three reasons why her heart was beating irregularly, one Arnav, two acceptance and three decline.
Making sure no one was around she slowly tore open the letter and nearly closing her eyes shut opened the folded paper.
Her fingers went numb, everything around her was still, she couldnt think.
"Khushi?" Payal called her.
"Aaahhh oh my god oh my god! I cant believe it!" she cried jumping on Payal.
"Calm down Khushi! Its alright, there are many more schools you can apply to. Its not the end of the world" Payal tried to soother her sister who was crying half...laughing?
"Payal! I got in!!!" Khushi screamed in her ear.
"Khushi there is someone at the do-or...whats going on?" Garima walked in on her daughters in a bear hug with the craziest exoressions on their faces.
"Ma! I got in!" Khushi let go of Payal and hugged her mother.
Smiling lightly, Garima hugged her daughter back.
"Acha Khushi we will talk later. There is someone for you at the door" she said in what kind of tone the sisters couldnt put a finger on.
Khushi looked at Payal, the same thought flashed through their head. Could it be? No...Khushi shook her head and went out.
